25.01.2022 A wonderful new book by Deirdre Slattery and Graeme Worboys. Kosciuszko: A Great National Park. This is an essential publication of a great Australian story. It tells the important story of Kosciuszko National Park and the knowledge and work that established, consolidated and maintained the park as a national treasure. It also tells the stories of the natural environment, of dedicated people, of the swinging balance between conservation and exploitation and the growth of professional land management in Australia. You can order online from Envirobook: www.envirobook.com.au
25.01.2022 It is rare to discover a new species of mammal, let alone two in one week! Originally thought to be a single species, scientists have just discovered that the unique and endearing Greater Glider - one of the world's largest gliding mammals - is in fact three separate species. Though exciting news, this reinforces the urgent need for us to significantly ramp up efforts to protect these special marsupials before they disappear from our landscapes forever. ... We will be doing just that. https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-discover-gliding-ma

23.01.2022 A beautiful flash-back to 2008 when the recently established Great Eastern Ranges Initiative was rapidly expanding to achieve a bold new vision - to bring people together to protect, link and restore healthy habitats across 3,600km of eastern Australia. Today, we are one of the world's largest conservation initiatives; supporting efforts in the highest priority places to achieve something far greater than the sum of our parts. #ThrowbackThursday #ThrowbackThursday... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6wflSmA7xk
22.01.2022 To help drive action to secure the future of our unique and special gliding possums, we supported a two-day virtual symposium last month run by our partner, the Central Victorian Biolinks Alliance Inc. The Greater and Squirrel Glider Symposium bought over 150 researchers, academics and on-ground practitioners from across the country together to share their practical and scientific knowledge to boost glider conservation. The key takeaways from the symposium will help to inform... the development of a national GER Glideways connectivity conservation plan. https://ger.org.au/sharing-knowledge-to-boost-glider-conse/
21.01.2022 Bats Are Not Our Enemies The viruses they carry spill over into humans mostly when we encroach on their territory or drag them into oursand bats do great good as well.

19.01.2022 Recent surveys in our Kanangra-Boyd to Wyangala Link partnership area estimate that the combined impacts of the 2019-2020 bushfires, prolonged drought and heatwaves have led to an alarming 60% decline in Greater Glider numbers in the Blue Mountains. The research also highlights the critical need for post-fire recovery efforts like GER's that operate at the whole-of-landscape, population and ecosystem scale. 17.01.2022 Today is National Tree Day, a day for all Australians to put their hands in the earth and give back to their community. Trees are an essential part of Australi...a's diverse habitat, and play a vital role in providing food and shelter for an array of unique and precious wildlife, including the koala. At Taronga, we're committed to restoring fragmented koala habitat and working with Greenfleet, the The Great Eastern Ranges Initiative and Jaliigirr Biodiversity Alliance to facilitate tree planting that increases landscape connectivity. This National Tree Day, we're calling on you to do your bit to help preserve our beautiful habitats and show your support to #HugATreeForNTD. @timcoulsonphotography
16.01.2022 The results are in: The first phase of the Bushfire Recovery Project, which aims to provide a science-informed response to the 2019-2020 bushfire crisis, is winding up. Led by Prof Brendan Mackey from Griffith University and Prof David Lindenmayer from The Australian National University in partnership with GER, the project is working to assess the impact of the devastating bushfires and track the recovery of our native forests. It is good to learn that most of the eucalyptus ...forests that have been surveyed are recovering well, but the story is more dire for our subalpine forests. Learn more and view the information collected at https://ger.org.au/delivering-a-science-informed-bushfire-/

14.01.2022 A new study has found that a significant 90% of the world's protected areas are isolated. Enhancing connectivity between our protected areas is critical for conserving our continent's unique and valuable biodiversity and for ensuring healthy, resilient communities in the face of climate change. The Great Eastern Ranges Initiative is working hard to ensure that isolated protected areas are linked up across eastern Australia for people and nature. ... https://www.uva.nl//only-10-percent-of-worlds-protected-na

08.01.2022 The theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) on 22 May 2020 is "Our solutions are in nature" As the global community is called to re-examine its relationship to the natural world, one thing is certain: despite all our technological advances we are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our health, water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy, just to name a few. The slogan Our solutions are in nature emphasises hope, solidarity and the importance of working together at all levels to build a future of life in harmony with nature.
08.01.2022 The documentary 'Love Flows' captures the stories of the events from World Fish Migration Day 2018 through the narration of Joshua Royte, a conservation scientist for The Nature Conservancy. It highlights our evolved understanding of the impacts of dams and the people who are working to make positive differences for rivers. This documentary aims to give these fish and the rivers they depend on a voice by showcasing the celebrations, knowledge, and great visions we have for our rivers. The documentary is directed by award winning director Francisco Campos-Lopez. 35 minute film (great for Sunday night)

05.01.2022 This section of our Illawarra to Shoalhaven partnership region is looking a lot lusher thanks to the planting of 421 native trees by these eager students from the University of Wollongong! The students planted the trees in the grounds of the Berry Sport & Recreation Centre as part of the Berry Bush Links project as a way of offsetting their carbon emissions Once planting is completed, the new trees will provide a 1.1km habitat corridor for wildlife moving through this sectio...n of the link. The Berry Bush Links project aims to plant a total of 14,000 native trees in the Berry Region by the end of 2022. A big thank you to all of the students and teachers involved.
04.01.2022 A handy booklet for those landholders interested in ways that they can easily improve the health of the 'natural assets' (such as dams, shelterbelts and rivers) on their farms. http://sustainablefarms.org.au/ten_ways
03.01.2022 A great article by our friends at Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative on why not just restoring but reconnecting landscapes is crucial for conserving our incredible biodiversity. Enhanced connectivity will become ever more critical in a rapidly changing climate and fragmented world. https://news.mongabay.com//in-the-fight-against-biodivers/
03.01.2022 Our Illawarra to Shoalhaven partnership joined Berry Landcare members and friends on the weekend to plant 700 native trees and shrubs on a property near Berry. The plantings form part of the Berry Bush Links project, a consortium of Landcare, private landholders, community and government organisations, who are working to restore and relink habitat in this key section of the Great Eastern Ranges.
03.01.2022 GER is deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and colleague, Dr Graeme Worboys, who passed away last week after a long illness. He was one of Australia’s true conservation giants and co-founder of the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative. Graeme was a passionate conservationist who spent his life working to protect Australia's environment; becoming a global leader and expert in connectivity conservation and contributing to the science and management of protected areas internat...ionally through his work with the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) which continued until the end. In a fitting final tribute to his lifelong dedication and significant contributions to conservation, the environment and community, Graeme was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (AM) on Australia Day 2020. Graeme will be sorely missed by all that knew him, but his legacy will continue to live on in the landscapes and endeavours he so richly inspired and contributed to. https://ger.org.au/a-tribute-to-dr-graeme-worboys/
