24.01.2022 We are ready to roll, in a socially distanced way!

24.01.2022 With regret but no surprise, we have decided that the Great East Rail Trail Ride 2020 will not be able to proceed. Every year since 2014, the event has provided not only a wonderful, community spirited cycle experience, bu also a welcome boost to the businesses that feed, house and transport us. After an appalling summer of fires, this was going to be a much needed shot of income for all of them. The Great East will be back in 2021, around the first weekend in October, and will once again be a joyous and very overdue gulp of eucalypt scented air, camaraderie and sense of the goodness of life. And a lovely bike ride. So stay tuned, and remember to LOOK AFTER YOURSELF body mind and soul if you are in Melbourne right now. We look forward to cycling with you in 2021.

23.01.2022 GREAT news!!. The Vic state government has today announced $3.5 M in the budget to restore the Snowy Rail Bridge as a walking and cycling trail. Cyclists riding the East Gippsland Rail Trail will start or finish their ride going across this magnificent 770 metre long historic bridge. HUGE win for the region!

21.01.2022 East Gippsland Rail Trail update: Amazingly, the rail trail has survived the fires almost intact, with just a few kilometres of trail between Nowa Nowa and Orbost still to be checked for safety. The main loss has been damage to 2/3 of the O'Grady's bridge, which spanned the Wairewa Rd about 8 km east of Nowa Nowa. All the towns along the trail have survived! With no increase in fire activity between Orbost and Bairnsdale on our last hot windy day ie Friday Jan 10th, I am starting to feel cautiously optimistic that the country between Orbost and Bairnsdale has now escaped the worst of the fires, with the huge area of burnt forest to the north ironically now something of a protective barrier. I'll continue to post updates as they come to hand. Thanks to everyone for your good wishes and comments!

20.01.2022 Its feeling a little bit lonely out here in East Gippsland right now, with no visitors from interstate and Melbourne. However we are staying optimistic for better times, and planning for the 2020 Great East continues! Our MAXIMUM number of participants this year will be 100, and we now have just over 30 spaces still available. And our Early Bird rate finishes on July 31. If you plan to join us BOOK NOW! Remember, bookings are by deposit only, which will be refunded in full if... pandemic restrictions mean the event has to be cancelled. You can find out more about how we plan to manage potential pandemic impacts on the event: https://www.greateastrailtrailride.com.au/covid-19-and-grea See more

17.01.2022 Two days of cycling down, and one to go, time to spare on Saturday afternoon at Nowa Nowa...how about a yoga session? Jeremy our qualified yogi ( and also chief cook and bottle washer from Bella E-Bike Hire on the Bellarine Peninsula) will be running simple stretch out and relax sessions in the afternoon.

17.01.2022 Saturday afternoon in Nowa Nowa on the Great East and time on your hands...hire a kayak or SUP from Sarah of Venture Out and explore the winding forest cloaked lake down behind our campsite. #loveeastgippsland

16.01.2022 Can you pick the mistake in this photo? That's right, these bikes are NOT SOCIAL DISTANCING. Sigh. Remember the days when we had never heard the term? Not withstanding our very changed society, we are going ahead with plans to run the Great East Rail Trail Ride in the first weekend of October this year, subject to lifting of restrictions. We won't know for sure if we can go ahead with the event until possibly 2 months beforehand, so bookings will require a DEPOSIT ONLY which ...will be fully refundable if the event can't proceed. Quite a few aspects of the event will be different this year, not least of which will be industrial quantities of hand sanitiser at every turn. So stay tuned, and we hope to be able to open bookings soon. #loveeastgippsland #visitgippsland #railtrailsaustralia See more

16.01.2022 Georgie and Timmy were a familiar sight on the Great East a month ago. Timmy, if you didn't know, was the guy that outshone Rrrroushka on the stage at Bruthen.(she really asked for it....)

16.01.2022 Put this in your 2021 diary people: October 1 - 3 for next years Great East. We expect to open bookings in May. You'll find out about it here, or if you want an early heads up shoot an email to [email protected] and we will put you on the email notification list.

15.01.2022 This was what our lunch site at Nicholson River Winery on Day 1 of the 2019 Great East looked like. Bukes resting while 130 riders munch on delicious fresh made rolls and cakes. #loveeastgippsland #railtrails #cyclingholidays #greateastrailtrailride

15.01.2022 Four weeks to go: it's time to get ready! - https://mailchi.mp/2/four-weeks-to-go-its-time-to-get-ready

14.01.2022 What a great day for a ride in East Gippsland today has been! In a Covid free world, today would have been day 1 of the 2020 Great East RAil Trail Ride. For the first time in six years I haven't spent the last week of September packing boxes, organising vehicles, printing and then checking more lists than you would believe possible, briefing my wonderful crew, finalising all the logistics for feeding, moving and looking after 130 people for 3 days and fielding a few last minu...te twists ( last year my computer screen smashed a few days out, thanks to bouncy dogs.) Instead I've been house painting, gardening and even riding my bike!! A big shout out of thanks and encouragement to all you Melbournians, who by sitting tight since....a long time ago... you have prevented the ongoing and explosive spread of Covid across Victoria and Australia. The Great East will be back in 2021, same time ( first weekend in October) and same place ( East Gippsland Rail Trail). Stay safe and well everyone, see you next year! See more

09.01.2022 The good ship Great East has set sail: Easy Camp tents going up now at Bruthen, first trailer load of bikes on their way to.the ride start in Bairnsdale. Gerring excited now!

09.01.2022 The East Gippsland Rail Trail is SAFE AND OPEN and we want you to come and ride it this weekend! Come and show some love for Nowa Nowa with our special deal for this weekend to bring back some visitors to our region.

08.01.2022 A quick look at what the Great East Rail Trail Ride is all about!

08.01.2022 You may never have expected to spend a Saturday afternoon in Nowa Nowa ( in fact you may have never heard of the place), but there's lots on to do. Come and be empowered at our bike maintenance workshop, and never fear having a puncture far from home again!

03.01.2022 Thanks Sarah @VentureOut! Every year Sarah brings a trailerload of her watercraft up.from Lakea Entrance so our riders can explore lovely Lake Tyers. She can also take you on a wicked ride around the Colqhoun Mountain Bike park if you need some adrenalin. #ventureout #loveeastgippsland #paddlenpedal

02.01.2022 Whatever sort of bicycle you ride, you are welcome on the Great East. This is one of the extreme machines parked at cute little Nowa Nowa Camp Park. We are sneaking in a 2 week break before gearing up for the Great East and our other spring tours, which means our 'office' will be closed until July 7. If you email, phone or text, we will catch up with you when return.

01.01.2022 Want to come on this years Great East but dont want to camp? We've just had a couple of cancellations (they are coming back a few weeks later with a group of mates) which has made 2 cottage and motel rooms available.for Friday and Saturday nights. This is almost the last of the accommodation, so move fast. We still have plenty of Easy Camp tents available, or of course you can byo.

01.01.2022 An update on the East Gippsland fires from where I sit: Orbost had a wild night on Monday, with a fire front roaring up to less than a kilometre away when the south west change blasted through and saved us. Apart from a small scorched area in one paddock from a spot fire, my families property, the town and all the houses and farms in the immediate Orbost area are fine so far. Nowa Nowa, Bruthen, Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale are also ok as far as I am aware, and from maps.of ...impacted areas, so far the The East Gippsland Rail Trail seems to have mostly escaped. There are reports that the big timber bridge at Wairewa (thats to the east of Nowa Nowa, s you travel towards Orbost) has been badly damaged, and there are likely to be burnt trees in places that will need to be cleared before the trail.is safe to use. East Gippsland will REALLY need some visitors when the fire crisis is over, as the peak summer season which is crucial to the survival of some of the little businesses aling the trail, has been gutted. So you might like to think about planning a visit out here when it is safe to do so! I'll update as the situation improves. Meanwhile I hope you are all staying safe and well. The devastation of the fires across Australia defies belief, and we are thinking of those who have lost everything. See more
