25.01.2022 Elite sport is not just about fitness - but being part of a community, having an ability to problem-solve, manage nutrition and accept feedback. Former Melbourne Vixens coach Julie Hoornweg had great advice and practical skills to pass on to Year 9 Specialist Netball Development Classes at Mooroopna campus today. The all-day workshop saw students schooled in all aspects of the game - umpiring, scoring, timing, statistics and (of course) playing!

24.01.2022 Not many secondary schools can claim a high-profile artist-in-residence! GSSC's Mooroopna campus is pleased and proud to be hosting Indigenous artist Tom Day who has set up his studio in one of our classrooms. Tom is completing a Reconciliation painting for the Victorian Parliament, among other commissions, and will be working with our students to document his artistic journey. He recently featured in local media including WIN News Shepparton. https://www.facebook.com/watch/

24.01.2022 Earlier this year our talented VCE Dance students presented this amazing performance at 'The Vault'. Dance Teacher - Mrs Kyla McGregor has choreographed a stunning piece to 'Hallelujah' covered by Penatonix. A special thank you to Mrs Kerry Cameron and the GSSC Media Crew and The Teller Collective.

23.01.2022 How much can you fit in a school assembly? Quite a bit at Wanganui campus today... Campus leaders Laura O'Connor, Brijesh Kumar, Ryley Symes and Vicky Burn presided over an Acknowledgement to Country, a presentation on how Muslim students have been celebrating Ramadan (thanks to Nida and Muhadisa), House awards for students acknowledged by their peers, a rundown on the Litter Action Plan being put in place by the students leadership and a thank you to all students for helping the school settle into a calm and supportive environment in recent months. There were also Cross Country awards and a dance performance (see separate posts) - not bad for a 30-minute break!

23.01.2022 Members of the GSSC School Council were impressed to see the scale and pace of construction taking place at Hawdon St this week. Builders Hansen Yuncken hosted our councillors on a site tour, taking in the framework of the new gymnasium to the future roof-top gardens of the Neighbourhood buildings. Striking and modern design features are now becoming evident, like the towering main entry to the Enterprise and Innovation Centre with its high-tech learning areas for all students and the House model and its contemporary classrooms, set to become a more intimate home to smaller groups of students.

23.01.2022 Today Year 12 GSSC students from both Wanganui and McGuire campuses attended the TIS Tertiary Information Service 2021 at Notre Dame College. Lots of Universities were in attendance and students had the opportunity to talk with the various representatives and get information on the courses they would like to study in the future. Thanks to all the Year 12 students who participated, who should be very proud of the way they represented their school today.

20.01.2022 They’re formally called Industry Information Meetings but informally it's Industry Speed Dating an opportunity for local employers and educators to get on the same page in preparing our young people for work. Last week, the latest meeting saw about 40 teachers and a dozen local employers gather at Wanganui - each employer spending five minutes with a table of teachers. Each then quizzes the other on how we bridge the gap between demand and ensuring our young people gain "job ready" skills and opportunities. It's timely with Shepparton going through a boom period - in the health sector alone, around 500 new jobs will be on offer over the next year or two. A great partnership and we thank our employers taking part...

19.01.2022 There were 269 Year 11 and 12 students who sat the General Achievement Test (GAT) today - joining some 85,000 students across the state. Our students used four venues to ensure social distancing and other health measures could be observed. GSSC students MK, Amir and Maykeesha re-created how they spent their three hours completing the GAT's 70 multiple choice questions and two essays - making for a big first day back at school!

16.01.2022 Tomorrow is Indigenous Literacy Day, there will be a virtual event starting at 12.30pm at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtrOi2Y-B8A. Join the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF), long-time supporter Archie Roach and ILF Ambassadors Jessica Mauboy, Andy Griffiths, Shelley Ware, Anita Heiss, Natalie Ahmat, Gregg Dreise, Jared Thomas, Alison Lester, Josh Pyke, and co-patron June Oscar AO who will be sharing their insights and stories of community engagement. And Jessica Maub...oy will sing a stunning rendition of ‘My Island Home’. In previous years, this celebration has taken place at the Sydney Opera House with children from remote communities, local schools and ILF ambassadors and supporters. This year, due to COVID-19, it is open, for the first time, to everyone Australia-wide. The production is designed to be a highly visual event to inspire broader Australia about the value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s first languages and why learning in language is important. Kids and community members from Tiwi Islands and Jilkminggan in the Northern Territory and Bidyadanga in Western Australia share their stories and the value of language, and Cheryl Lardy reads Yu sabi densdensbad? (Can You Dance?) in Kriol. At ILF we understand that early literacy is the cornerstone of success in education,’ says Karen Williams, Executive Director of ILF, We understand that encouraging early literacy requires children and their parents to have access to books and that children need to see themselves in the stories they read. They need to see that their culture is cherished and their stories are celebrated by all Australians. We welcome everyone to join us for what we believe is an incredibly positive story, and one that all Australians should be part of. The ILF is a charity of the book industry and focuses on 3 programs for remote children and their families: Book Buzz supports early literacy; Book Supply provides culturally relevant books and books translated in language; and Community Literacy Projects engages communities to write and illustrate their own books in their first language. Donations to the Foundation fund these programs to communities that need them most. The Foundation is encouraging everyone to donate. Every $10 puts a book into the hands of a child in remote Australia. To donate go to: ild.org.au Ms Cooney GSSC Head of Library

15.01.2022 The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has now completed its risk assessment of Greater Shepparton Secondary College - Wanganui Campus. As part of its investigation, DHHS has identified people who have potentially come into close contact with a student who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) earlier this month. It provided direct and specific advice to these individuals and their families about quarantine and looking after themselves. If you were not contac...ted by DHHS directly, then you are not considered to be a close contact. DHHS has also advised the school it can re-open from Monday 24th August now that appropriate cleaning has completed. 08.01.2022 Next Friday August 28th GSSC will be encouraging staff and students to take part in "Wear It Purple Day" to celebrate the LGBTIQA+ community. The day was founded in 2010 in response to global stories of real teenagers, real heartache and their very real responses to bullying and harassment resulting from the lack of acceptance of their sexuality or gender identity. The school will be looking at ways we can show our support during remote learning but in the meantime, dig out those purple duds for your online meetings and classes!

06.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=195806655382131 Our dancers have been keen to perform all year and the Australian Ballet Company has been just as eager to mentor and develop our talent. After months of separation due to Covid-19, we have finally come together. Our students are meeting Company dancers off site (at Shepparton Sports Stadium) but we are grateful to our country's elite dancers in doing all that they can to support our dance students over the next fortnight. Thanks also to WIN-TV for their coverage of classes....

01.01.2022 Book Week is Coming, 17 October-23 October. Great prizes: $50 ITunes or Google Voucher for overall best Book Week poster across GSSC. $25 voucher awarded for best Book Week poster at each campus.... GSSC Book Week Poster Competition (see flyer for details) We understand for many GSSC families the last few weeks will have been challenged finding things to keep children of all ages occupied when they’re not doing remote learning. In providing the short list of Children’s Book Council Award nominees we hope these may act as a guide when considering book options during this time for all the family from secondary school downwards. As noted at the end of the list itself, titles highlighted in yellow are available on GSSC’s Library Wheelers ebook platform and can be borrowed now. Other books not highlighted are available in hard copy from the campus libraries when we are back on site, even some of the titles for younger readers. Collins Books in Shepparton are a great resource for these and any other books you might like to purchase. https://cbca.org.au/news/2020-cbca-book-week-theme-announced

01.01.2022 To help celebrate NAIDOC week, Wanganui Campus Year 11 student Jada welcomes her peers to country and informs about the significance of the week.
