24.01.2022 Meet Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area Fruit Fly Fighter Dianne Cross. Dianne has a lovely fruit garden set up in Mildura, but she knows that even in an urban area her actions impact others in the community, especially commercial growers. Dianne recently removed some fruit trees so she could focus her time and efforts on managing her figs, lemon, plum, mulberry and olives. Dianne finds that keeping her trees small makes them easier to manage. Even though her plum tree is smal...l, it was laden with lovely clean fruit this year. It is great to have Dianne on board as a Fruit Fly Fighter, spreading the message that we can live with Qfly throughout her community. You too can learn to live with fruit fly. 22.01.2022 Great to see our @Swan Hill Rural City Council Mayor Bill Moar and @Swan Hill Savers getting in behind our great community effort on Queensland Fruit Fly in this update. Our stone fruit growers have done an amazing job this summer, with all they’ve been trying to manage, but it’s up to all of us: Mayor Moar: We have to be vigilant at all timesif you have fruit trees yourself, cover them with a net, pick up old fruit or contact the Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area and they can come and pull them out for you. Don’t let fruit overripenget it off, don’t leave it lying around. Thanks Bill and Trent!

20.01.2022 Meet Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area Fruit Fly Fighter Annette Hollingworth. Annette has an extensive garden in her small urban yard, including a lovely big veggie patch and an apricot, olive and three citrus trees. After having fruit fly in her peach tree this year, Annette decided it was time for it to go. She is also covering her tomatoes with insect nets and will redesign her veggie garden so it’s easier to net next year. Although Annette couldn’t net her plum tree this... year due to its shape, she removed all fruit before it was ripe to avoid any fruit fly infestation and will prune and shape it over the coming years. Annette is an avid Fruit Fly Fighter and recommends management strategies to her friends. You too can learn to live with fruit fly. 15.01.2022 "The traps attracted Queensland fruit fly I didn’t have a problem until they started giving out traps." We've heard it said, but it's a myth!

14.01.2022 SPRING CLEAN YOUR GARDEN Maintaining and planning your garden is the key to keeping out Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) and the Greater Sunraysia Pest Free A...rea (GSPFA) is here to help. We can do the hard work in your garden and remove any trees that are prone to fruit fly attack and are no longer wanted, GSPFA regional coordinator Narelle Beattie said. Now the weather is warming up, Qfly is becoming more active and looking for fruit to lay eggs into, so it’s the perfect time to sign up to the free tree removal program. Almost 8000 trees have been removed across the greater Sunraysia region since the program began about three years ago. To register for free tree removal, visit www.pestfreearea.com.au.

14.01.2022 Queensland fruit flies only need to mate once to make up to 800 adult flies. It's a fact!

13.01.2022 Queensland fruit fly is still active in winter. Now is a good time to refresh your traps. It's best to put them in trees with leaf coverage, such as a citrus or native tree. For information on where to purchase traps and how to refill traps, visit www.pestfreearea.com.au.

12.01.2022 Don't be complacent with your citrus trees Queensland fruit fly can lay eggs into most citrus varieties.

12.01.2022 We know how important winter pruning is when it comes to fruit fly management. But what about summer pruning? Pruning your fruit trees while they’re still in active growth helps to maintain their shape and keep them at a good size for netting and harvesting. There’s a small window left to perform a summer prune while stonefruit and pome trees still have green leaves. ... You can learn more about summer fruit tree pruning here: https://www.abc.net.au//factsheets/summer-fruit-t/11943374

08.01.2022 The best way to reduce the impact of Queensland fruit fly on yours and your neighbours' fruit and vegetables next spring, is to clean up now. Remove all ripe fruit from your garden and either use it or dispose of it properly. If you have fruit trees that are highly susceptible to fruit fly that you don’t use, like feijoas, guavas or loquats, consider removing them completely and replacing them with an attractive non-fruiting plant. ... Contact the GSPFA on (03) 5022 0327 to see if you are eligible for the free tree removal program.

07.01.2022 Queensland fruit fly attacks a wide range of fruits and fruiting vegetables, leaving them inedible. Check green and ripening fruit for signs of fruit fly and remove and destroy damaged produce. Fruit to look out for in April: pears, apples, nashi, quinces, guavas, ruby grapefruit, and olives.

04.01.2022 In this worrying and stressful time it is important to take time to appreciate the good things around us. Like this beautiful stone fruit blossom colouring the farms around Swan Hill at the moment.

04.01.2022 The Christie Centre has joined the fruit fly fight! The local disability service recently took advantage of the GSPFA’s free tree removal program and had several fruit trees removal from its Mildura properties. Centre staff were no longer able to effectively manage the trees, so they decided to remove them in support of our local horticulture industries.
