17.01.2022 This week NSW DPI Biosecurity ran Exercise Piggyback, a cross agency collaboration to test NSW’s capacity to respond to an outbreak of African swine fever. African swine fever is a serious, highly contagious disease of pigs. It is notifiable in Australia, meaning any suspected cases need to be reported to the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Serpentine leafminers look like little black flies. Larvae create squiggled trail patterns on plant leaves. 06.01.2022 Kurrajong locals came together for a Nocturnal Nature Safari with ecologist Tom Covell from Hooked on Nature recently. The group spotted some fascinating animals and also heard a boobook owl, yellow-bellied glider and male koala. One very special find was a Blue Mountains Land Snail. It was RAINING cicadas and some could even be seen hatching! A big thanks to Hawkesbury City Council for partnering with us through the #EveryBitCounts program to deliver this event.

03.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT THE ANIMAL EVACUATION CENTRE AT CASTLE HILL SHOWGROUNDS IS NOW CLOSED. Thanks to our dedicated officers for keeping 62 animals safe over the past week. It was too hard to resist a quick cuddle with some of our furry guests.... A massive thanks to The Hills Shire Council, Animal Welfare League NSW and all the animal owners who made the evacuation centre run so smoothly.
