25.01.2022 A moment of thanks to the people and doctors of the Yarra Valley who succeeded in having air quality monitors installed in Warburton and Healesville following decades of industrial logging pollution. The long-term pollution events from logging burns have contributed to a sobering statistic that people in the Yarra Valley are dying at twice the rate of people living in the city of Melbourne from respiratory diseases (Yarra Ranges Health and Well-being Profile 2017-2020 pg 135). From here on, we will have the tools for early warning and to be able to measure the health of our air. Thank you to the leaders of this work, you know who you are. #airpollutionawareness #airquality #gfnp #landscapephotography #healthyliving #communityservice #caringforothers #ourrights #countrylife

23.01.2022 September 7 is National Threatened Species Day. On this day in 1936 the last remaining Tasmanian Tiger, Benjamin, died in a Hobart Zoo, setting the scene for Australia's global record as having the highest rate of vertebrate mammalian extinction in the world. Today we look to our Central Highlands forests and consider several of the species on their own extinction trajectory.

21.01.2022 Its getting to that time of the year when the forests look their best and youre invited to tell your story about them... from within, above or below them. The Great Exposure photo contest celebrates real people having real experiences and capturing them whatever way you like. The winning works will be celebrated on merchandise and winners will be in for a wonderful prize...to be announced #gfnpphoto

20.01.2022 Have you been here? These are montane fens high up near the Baw Baw Plateau and until 2007 they werent recognised until a small group of conservationists forced an assessment after logging threatened the future of this site. The montane fens will be covered in snow soon but do go and see them and sit quietly as the frog song is out of this world. 19.01.2022 Happy National Wattle Day! Happy first day of Spring. The forest is heaving with golden blooms and that means a wonderful opportunity awaits after Stage 4 lockdown lifts for the patriotic Melbourne adventurer. For rural and regional folk, the forest is yours to enjoy right now!!! #WattleDay

19.01.2022 Happy National Tree Day 2020 Get Outside and Grow and make nature a part of your everyday life where you live. While many of us cannot venture to Melbournes magical mountain ash forests during this time of lockdown, we encourage you to step outside and enjoy your natural surroundings in your village, suburb or town, social distancing of course. It is in the natural world that people have sought solace and inspiration during our time on earth. It is especially important n...ow, during this period of physical isolation from our friends regular routines, that trees and their environments can nourish and help us to navigate our way forward. Whether its forest bathing (Japanese: shinrin yoku), a walk with the dog, your family or in isolation, get out and grow! #GFNP #trees #nationaltreeday #forest #forestphotography #forestbathing #wunderlust #wonderlust #shinrinyoku #gippsland #mtdonnabuang #warburton #melbourne Photo credit: Chris Taylor Art: Adam Fletcher See more

16.01.2022 The snow is falling on the mountains. Theres been some fluffy flakes on Baw Baw and just as soon as we can, well be getting out there to capture more shots. In keeping with the story of our great water system, this snow slowly melts over the season to form a regular supply of water into the catchments. The snow gums of Baw Baw capture some of the highest rainfall quotas at elevations of more than a kilometre above sea level. 15.01.2022 The rolling storms carry rain into our catchments and rivers. The forests percolate the mists and rain through the ecosystem releasing the water for our benefit, this is whats called an ecosystem service. Melbourne is one of several major cities that harvests water from surrounding forested catchments. In the late 1800s, the Victorian parliament declared that the primary catchments for Melbourne should be protected from farming, mining and logging as typhoid and other is...sues gave Melbourne the unfortunate name Smellbourne due to its unsanitary water. Catchments were closed despite the tirade from timber-getters and as such we now owe our premiere water supply to the decisions of our forbears. But as Melbourne grew, so did our water demand and new catchment areas were declared and built such as the Thomson Dam, now Melbournes largest storage. Although the science has been clear for a century, not to damage where you drink, logging is permitted in the Thomson and we will return to this topic later. This video observes the rain moving over Mt Dandenong and interacting with our catchment system.

15.01.2022 From the rich rainforest understory flows some of the purest water on earth. The clouds and rain interact with the forest sponge to collect and cleanse the water youre probably drinking right now (if youre in #Melbourne). You are connected to this place, this is one of Melbournes water sources. #gfnp #waterstories #wurundjericountry #wildernessculture #seeAustralia #exploreaustralia #thegreatoutdoors #wanderout #ourcamplife #earthfocus #parks #natgeotravelpic #beautifuldestinations #exploremore #earthfocus #nakedplanet #hikelife #theoutbound #staywild #nature_brilliance #nature #nature_aus #earthpix #visitvictoria

14.01.2022 Theres a little snow falling up on the Baw Baws as of yesterday according to @mtbawbaw resort. This tranquil spot called the montane fens is the headwaters of the largest water supply to Melbourne - the Thomson river. And over the next few days well follow this river to your kitchen. This relatively small stream emerges from a large soaking fen, alive with frogs and birds. But once upon a time this place wasnt safe and was set to be logged. After a strong battle, in 2008,... this unique ecosystem was finally recognised as a site of significance, named a montane fen and logging was stopped from ring barking its surrounds due to the efforts of scientists and conservationists. This campaign took 3 years and in securing this spot we also saved the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species critically-endangered Baw Baw Frog. Big shout out to campaign and science leaders Professor Jean-Marc Hero, Dr Chris Taylor, Sarah Rees, @wilderness_aus, amphibian citizen-scientist David Black, Dr Greg Hollis and all the Zoos of Australia that backed the conservation efforts. Special thanks to folks that gathered on the steps of Parliament, signed petitions and wrote to MPs. Gratitude to Liberal ex-MP Phil Honeywood for raising it in parliament and thanks to Labor ex-MLC Gavin Jennings for delivering its final protection last year in a second conservation covenant under the Immediate Protection Areas. You can walk the fens in a short circuit and there are some stunning picnic spots just waiting for you as soon as the lockdown is lifted. Photo: ChrisTaylor #GFNP

12.01.2022 Clouds wrap around the great Mountain Ash as they drift through the ecosystem. Water vapour collects on the leaves and branches, gently streaming down the trees into pools and soaks. The entire forest is a living biome collecting and cleaning our water - at no cost to users. We just need to let the forest do what it does ...and look beautiful. This is Melbournes drinking water. Just a note, this Easter Weekend many National parks will be closed due to necessary protections to spare our hospitals further burden. People need to follow the rules and have the best Easter hunts and festivities at home. I hope you all have your @loving_earth eggs coz weve heard that theyve blitzed and sold out. 10.01.2022 COVID-19 restrictions have increased in Victoria (again) but this shouldnt stop our outdoor exercise, however it does limit your gathering size to a maximum of 10. Remember to always be respectful of nature, please dont tread down moss beds and creeks, tiny aquatic life relies on these delicate ecosystems and weve noticed damage occurring in pristine environments from people leaving tracks to pursue their best life photos or leaving kids to run amok. We dont want to be ...grouchy, because everyone should enjoy these special places, but as much as they are our recreational fun they are also our responsibility. Never forget the adage, leave a place in a better state than when you arrived. 06.01.2022 Look what's coming! This Saturday, the Yarra Valley Writers Festival will be debuting (online) with a keynote talk on forests and our changing climate from one of the world's most esteemed scientists, Laureate Professor David Lindenmayer AO. Global rankings put Professor Lindenmayer AO at 2768 of 6,880,389 scientists - in the top 0.04 per cent of scientists in the world. He is the worlds most cited forest ecologist; the worlds fifth most cited conservation scientist and in ...the top 30 of most cited ecologists ever. Professor Lindenmayer is ranked by Google scholar as being in the top 50 Australian scientists of all time across all disciplines. Professor Lindenmayer has studied the forests of the Yarra Ranges for 37 years, his family are also part of our valley community and David has some important news for us with regards to our forests and climate. Tickets are below, come along (online) to what should be one heck of a talk.

05.01.2022 Ever wondered what the homes of gliders, possums and owls look like? These trees are nicknamed blocks of flats by loggers as they are teaming with wildlife residents. 03.01.2022 With Bunnings ending their wood product contracts from Victorias Ash forests this week, our little marsupial emblem may not go the way of the Thylacine after all. Bunnings have been working with VicForests for years to help them understand the problems with these wood products but after Justice Mortimer of the Federal Court found timber from certain coupes was cut unlawfully, Bunnings finally ended the relationship. Officeworks have also chosen not to stock products that con...tain Victorian native forest too. This was no surprise to anyone who has been part of this gradual process. Many of us have been working for years on bettering these supply chains and it certainly didnt come as a surprise to the states logging agency who have been involved with the negotiations for more than a decade. We want to say thank you to Bunnings and Officeworks for holding a strong standard for product sourcing and using the @fsc_australia as their benchmark for best practice forestry. This is an example of good Australian corporate responsibility. Photo: Jenny Gray #gratitude #corporate #wood #adventure #nakedplanet #wildlife_perfection #animals #gfnp See more

02.01.2022 As the sun goes down on another Saturday in iso, how about kicking back and watching a beautifully crafted Australian short film by Marli Lopez-Hope and her team about the Great Forests of Victoria. The Great Forest is a short film that documents the unique beauty of this area and the ongoing campaign that hopes to protect the forest from logging and fires. This film was captured on Taungurung and Wurundjeri country with the voice of Wurundjeri elder Aunty Joy Wandin-Murp...hy. A captivating journey.. https://vimeo.com/161012753
