18.01.2022 The Community Centre has put in for a Tasmanian Community Fund grant of $315.000 to finance 89 Solar panels, 4 x 26,000 litre water tanks, a Maker's Space (Like a Men's shed but for he and she) and a community greenhouse. (Both structures awill be quite substantial in size). We are through all the rounds and next Wednesday 2nd December have to go to the Board of Grant Management and put our case forward why we should get the grant, what we could then achieve and why, and an...swer any of their questions. From all the feed back we are reasonably confident (with a lot of prayers) we meet all the criteria and that we shall get the grant. Unfortunately before any work can begin we need to raise $30,000+ so we are asking all we know for any donation they can give no matter how small. If everyone could pass on to all your contacts our Go Fund Me link https://www.gofundme.com/f/great-lake-community-maker039s-s your contacts and in particular to anyone with an interest in the Great Lake / Central Highlands area. We feel the perfect commencement date would be early/mid January so that lockup stage could be reached before winter and fitting out by local volunteers could then be achieved ready to be officially opened early next year. Our main concern with work is the unreliable weather conditions. The committee and I have worked extremely hard under sometimes difficult conditions to get this project up and running to this current stage. Unfortunately without your generous support the Centre will not be able to reach our 'Conditions of Grant' and therefore the project will not be able to go ahead. Should anyone prefer to direct debit please contact me for account details etc. Linda President

16.01.2022 Hot temperatures fanned by strong Northwest winds to bring the Worst bushfire conditions so far this season on Monday. Share and tag family and friends. Weathe...r situation : Hot and strong northwestly winds to develop ahead a cold front on Monday that crosses the state later on Monday to bring a cooler change. High fire dangers extend to most of the state Monday and today. Fire weather watch for Monday : Very high to locally severe fire dangers extend to the southeast, Hobart, Derwent, huon Valley, Central highlands, east coast, West and midlands. *widespread temperatures into the low to mid 30s for the southeast, midlands, Derwent, West and parts of the east coast. Temperatures into the high 20s low 30s throughout the North inland areas while coastal areas should remain in the mid to low 20s. High bassed thunderstorms are a more notable risk throughout the southeast, Derwent and pars of the west Monday afternoon. * These storms pose a significant risk of dry lightning that could start new fires. Strong Northwest winds with gusts 70 to 85km/h devlop ahead of a cold front from late Monday morning and into Monday afternoon through the southern half of the state. * Bushfires under all above conditions will be extremely difficult to control and fast moving this will put lives and properties in danger. This is not a day to be taken lightly we are ringing the bells loud and clear people should be using today to prepare and go over bushfire plans you don't have that time when a bushfire is approaching.

13.01.2022 Congratulations Malcolm Crosse for being inducted into the Tasmanian Anglers Hall of Fame. Malcolm has indeed worked tirelessly for the sport of competition fly... fishing. A note from our Patron Janet Holmes a Court. As The Patron of Fly Fish Australia, it gives me much pleasure to be able to congratulate Malcolm Crosse for having been inducted into The Tasmanian Angling Hall of Fame. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honor. Many years ago, my late husband Peter said of Malcolm, in the words of Rudyard Kipling, he can walk with kings and commoners. I would like to add that Malcolm’s wife Kaylene has also done an enormous amount for fly fishing in Australia.

10.01.2022 Tasmanians are reminded that Tasmania Fire Service has declared a total fire ban for 12 municipalities in the southern region until 2am tomorrow. The declaratio...n of a Total Fire Ban means that no fires are allowed in the open air, including incinerators, burn-offs, campfires, fire pots, and wood-fuelled barbecues. The total fire ban is in force in the following municipalities: Brighton, Derwent Valley, Hobart, Sorell, Central Highlands, Glamorgan Spring Bay, Huon Valley, Southern Midlands, Clarence, Glenorchy, Kingborough and Tasman. No fires may be lit or allowed to remain alight in the open air from 2am Monday, 11 January 2021 until Tuesday, 12 January 2021. This is due to a significant warming event and the associated conditions of low humidity and increasing winds. This combination will present significant fire weather across the south of the State, in particular potential severe conditions for many areas of the Upper Derwent and South East for an extended period. Hot temperatures are expected today, pushing the fire danger rating to Severe in several districts. Landowners who have recently had fires on their property must check them and ensure they are fully extinguished. For people camping particular attention should be given to campfires used in recent days to ensure no residual heat remains before leaving the site. People can assist with the challenging conditions by promptly reporting fires via Triple Zero, preparing their properties, reviewing their bushfire survival plans, and keeping up-to-date on changing conditions. Immediately reporting fires increases the likelihood of fires being able to be contained quickly. More information on Total Fire Bans and incidents in your area can be found at www.fire.tas.gov.au or by listening to ABC Local Radio.

10.01.2022 Hi All, Please, please, please share this as much as possible especially to all Fishing Clubs, Emergency Services and members that have had some involvement or connection with our Community Centre in the Central Highlands, on the edge of the Great Lake, Miena. If we succeed in getting the Tasmanian Community Fund Grant due to be decided mid December we can't start work until we have our compulsory contribution of dollars in the bank. ... Because of the obvious restrictions and delays caused by weather, we would love to start the project and get it to lock up as soon as possible starting early January so the inside work can continue while it snows it's heart out over winter. Any contributions over $100 will have the option for the donor's name to be placed on an Honour roll in the Centre. Please support the Committee of Volunteers who have put in so much time and effort at the Community Centre getting the Community's involvement, holding events, activities, fundraisers and catering for large functions to be recognized as an integral part of the Central Highlands, the true Heart of Tasmania.

07.01.2022 Memories of wonderful supporting and caring people who were at the original meeting at the Great Lake hotel back when the fires swept through in 2019. Bron an...d her mother Barb (whose in her ninties) help and worked with us to meet the animals needs. Today I visited and again beautiful pouches and material were given just like in 2019. This will help to continue the work. The work was tiring, for 9 months we feed out, but there wasn't enough people and the work fell on a few. Ken for instance, travelled from the low lands through snow and rain to help for months, Robyn walked the Ouse river to feed out. There were others just as caring. The CHWG promised to put a training program and build on resources to meet any future needs. We would be ready. The training happened last weekend, The Great Lake Community Centre supplied the venue at no cost. They then supplied morning and afternoon tea. VANILLA slices, Devonshire teas, and a light lunch both days as a recognition as a community we are all responsible for our wildlife. We asked presenters with expertise in specific areas to come and help increase our skills, build on our awareness and understanding of our native wildlife. The presenters were passionate about our native wildlife. Feedback forms I'd like to frame. We will in the new year have workshops and continue to build a great supportive network. Thank you everyone ,you are valued and appreciated. See more
07.01.2022 Ahead of warming conditions forecast over the weekend and with an expected peak on Monday, the TFS is enacting a permit embargo for southern Tasmania from 2am t...omorrow. The developing hot, dry conditions with strengthening winds forecast across the south of the state will increase the potential fire risk for many areas particularly the Upper Derwent, Midlands, Coal Valley, and southern parts of the East Coast which continue to experience below average rainfall and curing of vegetation, particularly grassland. The permit embargo will remain in place until midnight Monday 11 January at this stage. No permits will be issued through this period. Existing permits, or permit fires conducted over the last week are to be checked and fully extinguished where possible. Registration of burning of vegetation under 1 cubic metre will also be discouraged and TFS urges the public to take additional care with fires in the open, or operation of equipment that may cause accidental ignition of vegetation during this period. There are also campfire restrictions in place. For further information on these areas check https://parks.tas.gov.au/explore-/know-before-you-go/alerts TFS is continuing to monitor the daily update reports from the Bureau of Meteorology and we ask people to stay aware and up to date of the situation as there may be other restrictions and notifications over the next two days as the forecast develops. To report a fire, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Check with your local council for additional burning restrictions. For information visit www.fire.tas.gov.au
