Agriculture Minister Adam Marshall MP will next week introduce ne...w laws which will see an act of aggravated animal cruelty attract a $110,000 fine (up from $22,000), and the possibility of two years imprisonment. The new laws will also see pet owners who fail to provide the basics like food and shelter be faced with a $16,500 fine (up from $5,000), and the possibility of six months imprisonment. Animal Welfare League NSW CEO Mark Slater said " We welcome the proposed new changes from the Minister and look forward to working into the future with the new laws to ensure the best possible welfare outcomes for all animals.". Animal Welfare League NSW is one of the only three regulating bodies authorised to exercise powers under the NSW Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Our Inspectors are authorised to seize and prosecute cases of animal cruelty and neglect, and our team are on the road every day protecting animals, educating owners, providing emergency rescue and investigating allegations of animal cruelty. "The changes to these laws will help to support our Inspectorate in ensuring cruelty offenders will be dealt with seriously in court.".

23.01.2022 It's going to be a HOT one this weekend! To help you keep your best mate safe, read the Animal Welfare League NSW's hot-weather pet tips below! Make sure y...our pet has access to fresh, cool water throughout the day. Ensure your pet has shade to escape the sun throughout the day (shady areas move at different times of the day!) Where possible, bring your pet inside to keep cool in air-conditioned rooms or safely near a fan. NEVER ever leave your pet unattended in a vehicle. It doesn't take long for pet to experience heat stroke in a confined, and heated space. Animal Welfare League NSW urges people to contact their local police if they see a pet trapped in a car during hot weather. Light-coloured pets are more at risk of sunburn and skin cancers, especially if they have pink noses and ears. Be sure to keep these pets inside where possible, and most pet retailers have pet sunscreen available to purchase. Australia is home to some of the best, and deadliest, snakes in the world. During Summer, snake activity increases so be sure to keep an eye on any curious pets if you are in a snake-prone area - and keep details of your local vet nearby. Some breeds (like pugs, bulldogs, boxers etc) have impaired physical ability to breathe, pant and keep cool. Be extra vigilant in making sure 'squishy-faced' pets are safe. Older pets, pockets pets (rabbits, guinea pigs), overweight pets, birds, and pets with respiratory or heart conditions need extra help staying cool during summer. Keep your pet's tick and parasite protection up to date. Tick danger is all year-round but more prevalent in the hotter months. Creating a disaster management plan that includes your animals is a critical part of responsible pet ownership, and planning ahead increases the likelihood of getting your pets to safety. ... Before the emergency, take the time to prepare an evacuation plan that includes livestock and pets. Tips to help plan for an emergency: -Prepare an animal emergency kit (see below) -Train your animals to be settled in a cage/carrier/crate/horse float -Ensure cats and dogs are microchipped and contact details are up to date -Dog and cats should wear collars and have an ID tag including their name, owner’s name and contact number -Plan for how you will relocate your animal -Consider transportation for larger animals for e.g. horse floats and trucks -Discuss your emergency plan with the family and practice it Preparing an animal emergency kit ensures you have the essentials for your animal if you need to seek temporary accommodation. The kit should include: Dry food and water containers (enough for at least three days) Food and water bowls Leads. collars, harnesses, etc. Poo bags for dogs, cat litter and tray for cats, etc. Cage or carrier appropriate for smaller pets (cat, bird, guinea pig, reptile). 20.01.2022 Meet our new boy Apollo Apollo is a sweet boy who is enjoying his time with his foster family. He doesn't take long to warm up to people but will need time to settle in. He will sit on your lap and watch TV. He was originally found as a stray so he's loving being inside but he does show interest in the outdoors so a home where he can safely explore outside is desirable. 20.01.2022 ZOE This lovely little lady is Zoe. Zoe is a 12 year old Shih Tzu X in need of finding a lovely new family to love and adore her.... Zoe loves lots of pats, cuddles and a good snuggle, she would be the perfect snuggle buddy for someone Zoe is good with children however would probably prefer the company of older children given her older age. We would require a meet and greet of any family members both human and pets. Zoe has shown no issues with dogs and was previously homed with another small dog. 19.01.2022 We can’t stress enough the importance of microchipping and registering your pets. If your dog or cat were to get out of your yard and become lost one quick scan and register check can get your pet straight back home to you. Sadly, we’re seeing a lot of out of date microchip details on stray cats/dogs... It’s a easy thing to forget about- but if you have changed address, phone number or your cat/dog is now in the care of someone else this all needs to be updated. You can check your pets details online at www.petregistry.com.au. Or head into your local council to check your details are up to date.

14.01.2022 Decorating the Christmas tree can be a great way to celebrate the start of the holidays, but it can be chaos for our pets! The attractive baubles, the shiny tinsel, and even the mesmerising tree lights can be tempting for our curious pets. Be sure to put your tree in a safe place. Cats especially may try to climb the tree so it is important that the tree won’t easily tip or fall over. Setting up in a corner can help or consider placing a pen or fence around th...e tree to stop your pet from accessing it. If your family has opted for a real tree this year, be sure to clean up regularly. Sharp tree needles may get stuck in your pet’s paws (or throat!), and the tree water may contain fertiliser and bacteria that can make your pet sick. Where possible, keep tree decorations out of reach of pets. Tinsel can be lots of fun to play with but can be hazardous for your pet if swallowed.

Puss is a 4/5 year old tortoiseshell/ tabby with the cutest little white front toes and long white socks on her back legs and stunning big green eyes. She is ready for a loving family after being found lost. Her foster carers have gently settled her from being timid and anxious to being happy to share the whole house and loads of cuddling. Puss is not demanding but she needs human company and follows... her fosterers from room to room. She will need daytime company, a quiet house and very caring and understanding parents as she still startles easily. Puss loves cuddles and tummy rubs and is very litter-tidy and well-behaved. She even patiently tolerates claw clipping. 10.01.2022 CHOCOLATE ALERT We have already treated our first case of chocolate toxicity this Easter. An Easter Bunny thief!! Chester arrived already vomiting... & tachycardic after consuming approximately 300gm of milk chocolate. Following treatment which included iv fluid therapy, activated charcoal & medication to slow down his heart rate, Chester went home this evening. Just a reminder to make sure all your Easter chocolates are kept well out of reach of your pets! Have a safe & happy Easter

07.01.2022 HEATWAVE ALERT: Native animals are well adapted to Australian summer weather but they can still suffer during heatwaves. Here are some practical things you can ...do to assist our wildlife over the coming days: - Put clean, cool water out for wildlife in shady places. https://www.wires.org.au//wildlife-fact/water-for-wildlife - Keep a box in your vehicle with a cotton pillowcase and a shallow dish and water bottle to fill the dish with cool water. Please always offer wildlife water in a shallow bowl to lap as needed rather than pouring especially from above. - If you find an animal suffering heat stress and it is safe to do so please take to the nearest vet immediately and handle as little as possible. - Flying-fox colonies can be impacted by heat. Please remember to NEVER touch a bat. If you see a bat of flying-fox on the ground or low to the ground please do not approach but provide shade gently mist intermittently and call WIRES 1300 094 737. 05.01.2022 More storms are forecast for this afternoon, please keep your pet safe during thunderstorms! When a storm is approaching, it is important that pet owners ensure their pets are safe and secured - even if you think your pet may be OK, planning ahead might just save your pet's life and at the very least, save them (and you!) from a world of panic and stress! If a storm is approaching, and you know your pet may be frightened, plan ahead and bring them inside. Music or the TV ...can help to drown out the noise, and long-lasting chews and puzzle games can provide a great distraction. If your pet is still showing signs of distress, it might be time to visit the vet to discuss treatment plans to help keep your pet calm and safe during thunderstorms. Pets who are microchipped and have an ID tag are much more likely to be reunited with their families. Always make sure your pet's microchip contact details are up to date! Why are some pets affected more than us? Dogs and cats have better hearing than us and are sensitive to atmospheric pressure so they are more prone to storm phobia or anxiety as the rumbles of storms are amplified. 02.01.2022 *** ADOPTED *** Introducing Max Last night we introduced you to Simba- now meet Max. He’s 1 year old and is a Border Collie X.... Please see his report from his foster carers- Max is the more submissive of the two. Likes to graze on his food. He can sit can wait for his meal and will eat when we say ok. Very good at sitting, especially if treats are on offer. Can be a little stubborn at times. Does have selective hearing at time also lol. LOVES water. If there is a puddle, hose or pool to play in you will be sure to find him in it. As he is still quite young, he is still mastering all the basic, like walking on a lead. He would greatly benefit from further training and socialising. Prefers the company of dogs his size. 02.01.2022 Introducing Patch- a very handsome and friendly boy! Patch is a Staffy mix and is 2 years old. He is currently being cared for by wonderful foster carers who absolutely adore him.... Patch is looking for an active family- he loves his daily walks so an owner who can take him for a walk or to the beach/ park would be ideal. He walks well on the lead, and is having leash free time with his carers. He enjoys company so a family that would allow him to have time inside would suit Patch. Patch has been friendly with dogs he’s met while our on his walks so would be happy having another playful dog for company. Patch would get lonely if he was left alone in the backyard so really does need an owner who can make him part of the family. He loves to chase the ball and LOVES water. He hasn’t shown too much interest in the surf but if there is a dam/river he is straight in. He has been brought up in a house with kids.
