25.01.2022 Four Bunnings Warehouse stores disrupted this morning across NSW - calling on Bunnings to stop selling native forest across all states, after they recently drop...ped contracts with VicForests. Customers expect Bunnings to safeguard Australias unique and sacred species. Yet Bunnings continues to turn a blind eye and help drive the destruction of critical koala habitat. Instead of driving this destruction, Bunnings could be part of a transition to a local and sustainable plantation timber industry. At everyday low prices, our native forests are worth more. Contact Bunnings and ask them to stop selling Forestry Corporation native forest logs! (02) 9846 7100

25.01.2022 We all remember the heartbreaking images of our beloved koala during the past summer bushfires. Now a new study has revealed the extensive impact a 71 per cent decline in koala populations across 6 different locations in NSW. Losing our iconic and beloved koala would be devastating and a shock to the international community. The business as usual practices of logging and big property development that put their profits first, need to end now if we want our beloved koala to survive. With stronger environment laws and independent governance, we can bring our koala back from the brink.

24.01.2022 The Bob Brown Foundation is proud to announce that Jill Redwood is our 2015 Environmentalist of the Year. "Jill has put up with threats, intimidation and even t...he killing of her livestock, to bravely speak up for the forests. She has had a huge hand in greening the map of Victoria, including a pivotal court ruling against logging at Brown Mountain, and in protecting the habitat of endangered species like the long-nosed potoroo and glossy black cockatoo. This year Environment East Gippsland won a reprieve for 2000 hectares of forest habitat for three species of owls. Besides her remarkable knowledge of the issues, Jill is a champion of organic food production, has a great sense of humour and is a fine role model for young Australian environmentalists," Bob Brown said in presenting the award to Jill in Melbourne this morning. https://youtu.be/PIRiKMXqiTg

24.01.2022 Almost 100% "waste!" This logging is NOT to supply the construction industry, it's for export woodchips. https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au//qanda-tracking-details.

23.01.2022 Yellow-bellied gliders of Yambulla State Forest are facing local extinction if logging in the burnt forest goes ahead, an EPA repport has warned. http://chng.it/2qMNmgVNCJ

22.01.2022 Do you think the NSW Coalition under Gladys Berejiklian is saving the Koala? - Since 2016 there has been a 1300% increase in land clearing approvals. - In 2018 ...an area 100 times the size of the Sydney CBD was cleared. Under the Coalition we've seen a return to broad scale deforestation in NSW. Under these policies the Koala is expected to go extinct in NSW by 2050. Let's stop the games and actually do something to protect the Koala in NSW.

20.01.2022 This is how to stop them....

20.01.2022 The National Parks Association of NSW (NPA) has expressed outrage at documents published by the ABC showing direct intervention by NSW National Party Leader, John Barilaro through the Regional NSW Department to allow logging back into forests heavily impacted by the bushfires.

20.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS: John Barilaros Department has directly intervened to force logging back into critical Koala habitat threatening the ecological recovery of the forest after last seasons fires. This is despite warnings from the EPA the move could be against the law.

20.01.2022 12 months on from start of the Currowan Fire, Clyde River Locals are shocked at Forestry plans to log 18 compartments between Batemans Bay and Ulladulla Just 12... months on from the devastating Currowan Fire, that started a year ago today, on 26 November 2019 and tore through the Shallow Crossing and South Brooman region, Clyde River locals are bracing themselves for an onslaught of logging by NSW Forestry Corporation with 18 forestry areas slated for logging, in burnt forests between Batemans Bay and Ulladulla. The logging plans, detailed on the Forestry Corporation’s Plan Portal, shows logging activities in the 18 sites as either ‘approved’, ‘planning’, or ‘proposed’. Two sites in the South Brooman State Forest were logged immediately after the fires leading to a Stop Work order being issued in July by the NSW EPA for breaches by Forestry Corporation contractors including the illegal removal of hollow bearing trees. Brian Bennett President of the South Brooman State Forest Conservation Group said, We have had enough. Clyde River locals fought fires twice, were flooded out by torrential rain, then bang, from March on, the struggling wildlife that survived in our spotted gum forests has had to survive logging of two compartments logged in South Brooman right next to unburned creeklines Us locals are shocked at Forestry plans to log eighteen more State Forest compartments between Batemans Bay and Ulladulla in the next 12 months. All of the planned areas to be logged have areas of unburned canopy and creeklines of unburnt forest with surviving birds and wildlife. Despite these plans, Forestry won’t say which one of the eighteen compartments will be next, so the community are left facing tremendous uncertainty about what is about to happen in our forests or be able to advise Forestry Corporation on important ecological, historical and cultural areas. We know Forestry are keen to log, without the EPA bushfire affected operation site specific conditions, that protect unburned canopy, increase creek buffers by 10m and protect rainforest and threatened ecological communities with an extra 35m buffer and keep all big old habitat trees with visible hollows, so vital for wildlife to take refuge and breed in. Birdlife Australia have called for an end to native forest logging on the South Coast between Ulladulla and Merimbula to protect critically endangered Swift Parrot feed trees. Swift Parrots fly here from Tasmania to feast on flowering gum blossom and there are less than a thousand pairs left. We want Forestry Corporation out of these forests. 85% of South Coast forests were burnt in the fires and billions of animals killed. These forests need to be given time to recover, not further degraded by logging, Mr Brian Bennett said. Logging plans include four compartments behind Shallow Crossing Campground that people will be holidaying in the summer. One of these Shallow Crossing compartments directly borders the western bank of the Clyde River. Local businesses who rely on access through the State Forests are struggling because of logging activities. Tourists and locals will have to navigate the dangers of loaded logging trucks on narrow dirt roads while viewing kilometres of devastated logged forests. Ms Takesa Frank employee of the Berry Farm said. We’re also worried about the thousands of tonnes of logging waste that has already been left on the forest floor in the two compartments logged this year in South Brooman that is adding to future fire risk. Forestry is in and out for a quick buck and the community are left with the impacts and risks. Investment in local tourism and local jobs are being sacrificed for logging, that is barely profitable, being conducted by a couple of workers employed by interstate contractors in each compartment. Ms Takesa Frank said. Enough already. Who would want the destruction and waste of logging in their local native forest to deal with? We’re calling for a transition of the forestry industry out of public state forests and into plantations and private land forestry. This ensures future timber supply and certainty for timber workers, while allowing the forests and wildlife to recover. Mr Brian Bennett said.

17.01.2022 From David Shoebridge: Using the data we have forced from the NSW Government, with the always vigilant help of Harriet Swift, Michael West has set out how the logging in the south of NSW is most likely illegal. In the 12 months following the catastrophic black summer bushfires, almost every tree logged in the region of Eden, in coastal NSW, was turned into woodchips or chopped up for firewood. This is almost certainly illegal because woodchipping cannot be the primary purpose of logging operations.

17.01.2022 This is a crucial task in protecting the future of this iconic Australian species.

16.01.2022 It's honestly unbelievable that the profit from native forest logging is this. Cut down a 20-50 year old mature gum tree and this is the return? It's environme...ntally and socially damaging, and economically it just doesn't add up! 12.01.2022 The Federal Env Dept told government bureaucrats to begin drafting changes to enviro laws on 19 June, 11 days before it received the interim report of the review of Australias EPBC Act. Graeme Samuel delivered his interim report on 30 June. It was a once-in-a-decade review of the effectiveness of environmental legislation. It found Australian governments had failed to protect Australias unique wildlife and habitats and recommended an overhaul of the laws to make the countr...ys systems of environmental protection more effective. His recs were mostly ignored and instead Sussan Ley (minister) rushed weaker bill through the lower house and gagged debate. This would OK mining and development approvals etc with almost no scrutiny. It still has to go through the Upper House and several cross-benchers could be the key to whether it becomes law or it fails.

12.01.2022 Native forest logging across the country would be exempt from national environmental protections under a bill proposed by Nationals Senate leader Bridget McKenzie.

11.01.2022 With 80% of south coast forest available for logging burnt in the summer bushfires, this is the Eden chipmill today. There is only one logging operation happening on the entire South Coast, with no logging in the Eden Region for over 6 weeks. So where did these woodchips come from?

10.01.2022 NEFA President Dailan Pugh, OAM along with other citizen scientists confirmed again today that Koalas are indeed in Myrtle State Forest. We shouldn't be logging their remaining habitat after so much habitat and wildlife was lost during the #AustralianFires #savebanyabbakoalas

10.01.2022 From GECO: More illegal logging from state-owned VicForests, this time for breaching limits for logging around towns and bringing the risk of bushfires closer and closer to communities and towns. "Kinglake Friends of the Forest spokeswoman Sue McKinnon said members of her group were concerned logging could raise the risk of fire by increasing forest dryness, wind speed and flammable regrowth.... Community groups will be forced to take VicForests to court for their own safety, she said. "Logging is getting closer and closer to homes as the forest further out has been cut down." What will it take for the Dan Andrews government to finally step in and stop this unlawful destruction? Where are the supposed regulators the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning ??

10.01.2022 This woodchip carrier Navitec arrived at the Eden chipmll today to load another 40,000 tonnes of woodchips. After 80% of forest available for logging was burnt in the summer bushfires, surely there are better ways to manage them?

08.01.2022 I say to the Government do this one simple thing and have a legacy you can be proud of: End Native Forest Logging.

08.01.2022 CALLS TO DISBAND FORESTRY CORPORATION OF NSW Bega MP and NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance has called for Forestry Corporation of NSW to be disbanded, f...ollowing the resumption of logging in bushfire affected forests south of Eden. Logging recommenced after negotiations between Forestry and the Environment Protection Authority broke down recently over instating special conditions to help protect burnt forests. There are plans to recommence harvesting operations in the Mogo State Forest too. Mr Constance says it's time for Forestry to go back to being a function of the government department, rather than a state-owned corporation. What do you think about this idea?

06.01.2022 Recent post-bushfire research shows the local koala population has survived in areas of forest hit by the summer blazes.

06.01.2022 Bellingens mayor Dominic King says hes concerned logging practices in the shire are causing long-term damage to wildlife habitat and water quality. He says clear felling and woodchipping of local forests is unsustainable.

05.01.2022 Australia is a world leader in extinction because our national environment laws don't *actually* protect nature. It's time to tell our Federal MPs to safeguard ...the life that supports us. Tell your MP! wilderness.org.au/Dear-MP-Stop-Extinction The independent review of Australias failed national environment law released its interim report - confirming our environment & our iconic places are in decline and under increasing threat. Unfortunately, the Morrison Government is proposing to immediately hand environmental safeguards over to the states before getting those strong environmental standards in place, and has rejected calls for an independent watchdog. Nows the time for our governments to lead and ensure Australias unique nature has a future. We know the solution and we know it will work: strong laws with clear safeguards, that are fairly and independently enforced for all and backed by guaranteed community rights. Please email your Federal MP today.

02.01.2022 The Morrison Government doesn't care about koalas. Just last month, the Environment Minister approved a quarry at Pt Stephens which will destroy 52ha of critical habitat for the endangered species. A koala census won’t save our national treasure. 01.01.2022 SPOTTED AT THE MURRAH THIS MORNING: A young koala was spotted on the move this morning, and local photographer David Gallan snapped these striking photos. Koala surveys are currently underway in Biamanga National Park, we will bring you an in-depth story in coming weeks.

01.01.2022 Mt Jersey near Goongerah was hit hard by the 2019/2020 bushfires, but wildlife still survives here, and these forests will recover if given the chance. The Depa...rtment found four Orbost Spiny Crayfish here. They're endemic to East Gippsland, and almost all their habitat burnt. Salvage logging has devastating impacts on crayfish habitat, increasing soil run-off and choking waterways with sediment. There is no way to "sensitively" salvage log. This is industrial scale destruction in areas that are extremely vulnerable and must be given every chance to recover. Government approved salvage logging spells disaster for surviving wildlife like the Orbost Spiny Crayfish.

01.01.2022 A new legal challenge could be the best chance in a generation to end native forest logging in Australia. The first hearing in Bob Brown Foundation's Great Fore...st Case is being held tomorrow. If successful, this stand against the logging of native forests in Tasmania would set a precedent and open the door for similar action in other states. Jenny Weber is a decades-long forest defender and the campaign manager at the Bob Brown Foundation, a Patagonia Australia 1% for the Planet grantee. She leads us through just what's at stake, from Tassie's takayna/Tarkine to the south-west-corner of WA, the wet tropics of QLD, and the Great Dividing Range down the eastern seaboard to the tallest flowering plants at our continents southern-most point.
