23.01.2022 Learn about gold. You never know when it will come in handy.
23.01.2022 This 15-minute read is worth your time in the quest to follow the science! Historian and writer Heather Cox Richardson publishes Letters from an American a nightly translation of USA news, with her sources. She recently noted this fascinating development from the editors of Scientific American, a premiere science periodical showcasing peer-reviewed science, established 175 years ago. Up until last week, Scientific American editors have never officially endorsed a US presid...ential candidate, but their letter explains their rationale for doing so now. They cite important examples of consequences of decision-makers and influencers who not only deny existence of peer-reviewed data and advice, but also actively change, suppress or misrepresent information to suit their own narrative. You can read it here: https://www.scientificamerican.com//scientific-american-e/ See more

22.01.2022 We are excited to share this short video highlighting our walk on #boodja with #Menang guides Vernice Gillies and Larry Blight. We explored the northern shores of Oyster Harbour in #Kinjarling (Albany) during the warming season #djilba (August-September). We shared morning tea and stories of Noongar culture, local wildlife, bush food and medicines, and artefacts for preparing food. Today, resident #yoon_do_da (osprey) keep a close eye on harbour fish stocks as they live..., nest and hunt around the 6,000 year old #mungah (fishtraps). These #Menang structures stand testament to powerful rhythms of life around coastal #boodja and the rich values of this tranquil and timeless meeting place. Heartfelt thanks to Great Southern Science Council collaborators Kurrah Mia Museum of the Great Southern National Science Week with Inspiring Australia - National Networks Inspiring Western Australia and Green Man Media Productions

19.01.2022 Heads up Perth! The planets will soon align in an out-of-this-world, once-in-a-lifetime event Look up between 7:30pm and 9:30pm on 21 December as #Saturn and... #Jupiter align so closely, they will look like one single glittering star. Want to see more? Head down to the picnic area at the Dogs Beach in North Coogee - Perth Observatory and Fremantle Sidewalk Astronomy will have telescopes set up so you can see Jupiter, its moons, and Saturn up close! Image credit: Perth Observatory. Note: Image is from the point of view of someone in the Northern Hemisphere so in the Southern Hemisphere we'd flip the image so Jupiter is on the left and Saturn is on the right.

08.01.2022 Meet the machines - part I, parts II and III still to come!
08.01.2022 The City of Albany have re-submitted modified plans for new trails on Mounts Clarence and Adelaide to the Federal Dept. Agriculture, Water & the Environment, who administer the EPBC Act, and the WA Department of Water & Environmental Regulation under a 'bilateral agreement'. The proposal will be assessed and a clearing permit will be published by DWER for public appeal, with 21 calendar days for submissions. When this will happen is anyone's guess. The CoA should be congratu...lated for its downscaling of clearing of vital endangered Western Ringtail possum habitat and their commitment to rehabilitate other trails. What is a concern is the solid green lines above Ellen Cove. These are new mountain bike trails through previously undisturbed habitat. Is it necessary to have an 'up' trail as well? Surely other less destructive options are available for cyclists to get back onto Mount Adelaide or back to the City centre? See more
06.01.2022 Another of the videos from the Great Southern Great Science Symposium. Here, the fabulous Alison Lullfitz and Shandell Cummings talk about Noongar and Western understanding of culturally significant plants on the south coast. There are lots more presentations on our Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch
05.01.2022 Access to fresh water has always played a pivotal role in human habitation along the South Coast. Today is no different. A drying climate and growing population increase the challenges to fresh water supplies. This was the theme for the 2020 National Science Week 'Science in the Cafe' at the beautiful View Cafe. If you missed the event, you can hear interviews with our 3 presenters Dr Julia Fry, plus Andrew Maughan and Sharon Stratico, Dept. Water & Environmental Regulation. Their presentations are also available for viewing. www.greatsouthernsciencecouncil.org.au//science-in-the-caf
