23.01.2022 Specialist plastic surgeon Mark Lee has joined the Great Southern Specialist Centre adding further choice to the growing team of specialists we have on offer. Dr Lee’s specialty interests include melanoma, skin cancers, hand surgery and both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, breast and body. Dr Lee will consult both public and private patients at the GSSC and has a public operating list at the Albany Health Campus. He operates privately at St John of God Subia...co and Hollywood Private Hospital in Perth and will also be looking at operating a private list at the Albany Day Hospital in the future for those patients with private cover. Dr Lee is a fully trained specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon having trained at medical school at UWA. He is currently based at SJOG Subiaco and is on the board of the WA Melanoma Advisory Service and co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Australasian Journal of Plastic Surgery. Having commenced at the GSSC mid July, Dr Lee will be visiting Albany every four weeks and consulting on a Thursday. 23.01.2022 Urologist Dr Elayne Ooi is now consulting at the Great Southern Specialist Centre and, with other specialists, planning a dedicated Albany Prostate Clinic - greatly enhancing the urology offering in the region. Based at Swan Urology in Perth, Dr Ooi’s special interests are wide and varied and include but are not limited to: Prostate cancer, Benign prostate enlargement, Male incontinence, Kidney stones, Overactive bladder, Bladder cancer and Vasectomy reversal. Dr Ooi’s vis...ion is to provide a one-stop shop for patients in the Great Southern region to have appointments, investigations and treatment for all their urological problems at the Great Southern Specialist Centre and Albany Day Hospital. In collaboration with other specialists, she is establishing, as a new initiative, the Albany Prostate Clinic where cancer patients can consult with a urologist, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist at one site on the same day. This team approach will improve outcomes, reduce waiting times and travel. Dr Ooi said she enjoyed helping regional areas and the farming community in the Great Southern held a special place in her heart. Dr Ooi will be consulting to the GSSC on Tuesdays and Wednesdays every 4 weeks. 19.01.2022 Ophthalmologist Dr Mike Brown will officially join the Great Southern Specialist team next week with a view to making Albany his permanent home. Mike brings a wealth of surgical training and experience to the GSSC, working in comprehensive general Ophthalmology with sub-specialist interests in medical retina, including intravitreal injections for AMD and diabetes, cataract surgery and pterygium surgery. The New South Welshman studied medicine in NSW but moved to Perth after ...graduating in 2009 with his wife Naomi, undertaking an internship at Royal Perth Hospital before moving into resident positions at RPH, Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, PMH and Fremantle hospitals. Growing up in country NSW, Mike has always had an affinity for regional areas and has always been dedicated to rural Australia his medical terms, training terms and fellowship have all been orientated towards rural and regional communities and he said he was looking forward to returning to a country lifestyle where there was a great sense of community and more relaxed pace. Mike commenced ophthalmic surgical training in 2014 in Perth and in 2018 undertook fellowship as the Fred Hollows Foundation Fellow at Lions Outback Vision. During that time he was involved in the delivery of specialist ophthalmic care to rural and remote communities throughout WA, including the Goldfields, Mid-West, Pilbara and Kimberley. Mike additionally undertook post fellowship training through Invercargill Hospital in New Zealand, advancing his skills in oculoplastics, medical retina and cataract surgery. He has worked since 2019 in the South West as a locum consultant through Bunbury and Busselton eye Doctors. Albany not only offers working opportunities to Mike, it provides him with the opportunity to re-embrace his country roots. He said the region reminded him of where he grew up and he and his wife made the decision to move to Albany part time this year, with a view to relocate permanently in the near future. He will be working in the Great Southern Specialist Centre initially every few weeks, hopefully increasing to near full time by the end of 2020. 19.01.2022 General surgeon Willy Low has signed on to the Great Southern Specialist Centre to further extend his surgical services to the local community. Mr Low has a public appointment at the Albany Regional Hospital but will be adding to his services in the region by providing options both locally and in Perth for patient procedures. He will be consulting patients at GSSC, and fortnightly in Katanning along with operating at the public hospital. In addition, those with private cove...r can choose to have their day surgery procedures done with him at the Albany Day Hospital or for overnight procedures, such as hiatus hernias, they can be performed at Hollywood Private Hospital within a short time frame rather than waiting on the public waitlist. This will enable patients to continue their initial and post op care with their local surgeon. Mr Low was always keen to pursue general surgical training and has worked as a registrar in various surgical specialties including plastic surgery, trauma and urology. His specialities now include Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery. Mr Low grew up in Malaysia and moved to Perth in 2003. After finishing medical school at UWA, he completed his internship and residency at Royal Perth Hospital. Mr Low was a medical student on a rural rotation the first time he moved to Albany in 2005. His positive experience in the region encouraged his return to Albany for further experience and training as surgical registrar in 2014. He completed his surgical training in WA, and then went on to spend two years in Sydney to pursue a fellowship in Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery. When the opportunity to work in Albany presented itself again in January this year, he and his family had no doubt the Great Southern would be where he would establish his career. Along with specialties in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery, Mr Low has an interest in Laparascopic hiatus hernia and anti-reflux surgery, Laparoscopic groin hernia repair, Therapeutic endoscopies and management of skin cancers. Mr Low plans to consult at the GSSC on Tuesdays on a fortnightly rotation. 19.01.2022 The Great Southern Specialist Centre welcomed Emily Shiel Pelvic Health Physiotherapy services this week. Emily is a Women's, Men's and Pelvic Health Physiotherapist and will be offering a specialised service that complements existing services already on offer at the GSSC. A physiotherapist with post graduate training in pelvic health works alongside urologists, gynaecologists, urogynaecologists, obstetricians, general surgeons and gastroenterologists to assist people in mana...ging complex conditions. Emily's clinical area of special interest and advanced training is focused on continence, pelvic health and pre and post natal care. Physiotherapy for pelvic health includes urinary and bowel dysfunctions for men, women and children as well as the management of pelvic organ prolapse. It also includes the assessment, management and treatment of pelvic pain disorders. Men benefit from pelvic physiotherapy both pre and post prostatectomy to assist with urinary leakage and erectile dysfunction. 17.01.2022 General Surgeon Mr Roshan Ramachandran will be travelling to Katanning and providing a monthly consulting and operating service to the community through the Great Southern Specialist Centre. Mr Ramachandran has joined GSSC to support our commitment to providing General Surgery outreach services to rural communities. This service is available to both public and private patients wishing to be consulted, and operated on, in Katanning. Please note Mr Ramachandran continues to hav...e a public salaried appointment with the Albany Regional Hospital. Referrals for those patients that would prefer to be reviewed through the public system in Albany by Dr Ramachandran are to be sent via usual processes directly to the General Surgical Department of the Albany Health Campus. His general surgical procedures include: hernia repair-groin/abdominal wall/incisional (open/laparoscopic), gallbladder surgery, hemorrhoidal surgery, carpal tunnel surgery, skin lesions, vasectomy, hydrocoele repair and breast surgery. 16.01.2022 Collection 9 has arrived at GSSC! The Art Lease Project is proud to present Collection 9 for the Great Southern Specialist Centre, featuring a wide variety of Albany artists. The collection has been put together with artworks by previous contributors Marion Nelson, Terri Pikora, Elizabeth Riley, Kirsten Sivyer and Liane Shavian. If there was one word to describe Collection 9 it would be diverse and excitingly so! The techniques, subject matter and styles selected for display... give an array of artworks which are all for sale. The 20% commission is donated to the Albany Community Hospice and matched by the Great Southern Specialist Centre. The Artists are paid a lease fee for the lease period. Many thanks to the outgoing artists Beth Kirkland and John Manson. For the past four months their artworks made up Collection 8, displayed within the Great Southern Specialist Centre. 16.01.2022 The Great Southern Specialist Centre is excited to welcome the first Medical Oncologist to the team Dr Ari Ariyapperuma. Dr Ari has decided to commence consulting patients privately to offer the local community alternative choices for provision of their care. Please note both public and private patients can be consulted by him at GSSC. He will continue his public work through the Albany Health Campus. Dr Ari treats all types of solid tumours and is happy to take referrals f...or undiagnosed patients with suspected malignancies for work up. As a consultant Medical Oncologist, Dr Ari is involved in teaching medical students and medical oncologists in training. He also has significant research interests and combines clinical practice with research work. His research has led to several publications and poster presentations. Dr Ari completed his initial Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, graduating with honours in Clinical Sciences, before undertaking further studies at Newham University Hospital in the UK. 14.01.2022 COVID-19 Update The team at GSSC continue to strictly adhere to all guidelines of the Department of Health WA to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in our community. Specialists are currently reviewing referrals and patients meeting specific criteria will be contacted this week to offer teleheath /telephone appointments where clinically appropriate.... In addition to this, due to the recent government announcements regarding non urgent category 2 and 3 cases, procedures for patients privately booked into the Albany Day Hospital are also under review. The team at GSSC will directly contact patients regarding any changes. We have also rescheduled clinics to minimise risks to attending patients, staff and specialists. In the interest of protecting our specialists, patients and staff, please do not enter our centre if you have: 1. travelled interstate or overseas in the past 14 days of your appointment, and are within the mandatory isolation period 2. been in close contact with a positive COVID-19 patient or awaiting test results or any other persons as per above 3. have flu like symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose, fatigue or shortness of breath. 4. We also ask that you contact the team on 9841 3500 to reschedule your appointment. 07.01.2022 CARDIOLOGISTS WELCOMED BY GSSC Two highly experienced Perth cardiologists are joining the Great Southern Specialist Centre team this month. Dr Justin Teng and Dr Bharat Khialani are based in Perth at eCardiology, a specialist centre passionate about integrating technology with Cardiology. Both cardiologists are already familiar with the Albany region, Dr Teng has been providing clinical cardiology services in Albany as well as supervising the cardiac CT program at Great Sout...hern Radiology (GSR) for the last 2 years and Dr Khialani has been flying to Albany once a month for the last few months for face-to-face clinics in addition to regular Telehealth appointments. The cardiologists will bring with them a cardiac sonography technician who will perform cardiac testing such as echocardiograms, ECG and Holter monitors. Dr Teng's expertise is a highly experienced and dedicated Imaging Cardiologist specialising in echocardiography and cardiac CT. Dr Khialani is an Interventional Cardiologist and Perioperative Physician with interests in all aspects of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Disease. He is passionate about ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmias, heart failure, percutaneous coronary intervention and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Dr Khialani is well versed in coronary angioplasty and stenting as well as the optimisation of patients through cardiac and non-cardiac surgery. Dr Teng and Dr Khialani both share a vision of providing innovative healthcare and cutting-edge technology in Cardiovascular medicine to deliver the best outcomes for patients. Dr Teng, Dr Khialani and their cardiac sonography technician Martin will be working on a rotational basis from the GSSC two days a week, every week commencing mid March, with this possibly increasing as the workload increases. 06.01.2022 Psychiatrist Dr Sarah Hutton joins GSSC Psychiatrist and women's mental health expert Dr Sarah Hutton will be joining the Great Southern Specialist Centre early next month. With a special interest in Perinatal Psychiatry and a Certificate of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Dr Hutton brings great experience in women's mental health to the Great Southern Specialist Centre. Dr Hutton joined the Albany community with her young family in 2019 for a sea change and now has plans to... settle in the Great Southern region long term. In addition to establishing private practice at the GSSC, Dr Hutton also provides a public service as a Consultant psychiatrist at WACHS heading up the Continuous Treatment Team and Consultation Liaison service. Dr Hutton attended the Leicester Medical School, graduating in 2007 MBChB, before moving to Australia in 2008 and settling in Newcastle NSW until 2019. Having completed her specialist training in Psychiatry with Hunter New England MH with over 10 years experience in psychiatry, Dr Hutton then undertook a Specialist Training Position in 2017 at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Randwick, Sydney in Perinatal Psychiatry. 04.01.2022 Collection 8 has arrived at GSSC! The Art Lease Project is proud to present Collection 8, featuring two of Albany’s award winning and well known artists! Beth Kirkland and John Manson.... The project is excited to have their art works for display within the Great Southern Specialist Centre for the next four months. John’s subject matter would be familiar to local people with painting names such as Aberdeen Street. Careful placement of colour and complex composition within his urban landscapes and still life paintings focus on a moment in time. Beth Kirkland’ paintings arise from the intuitive manipulation of somewhat disparate marks and shapes. Elements are arranged to suggest traces of a process as well as references to the snow and ice of her northern home and the salt lakes of Australia. Please be advised our centre will be closed from Wednesday 23rd December and resume normal administration hours on Monday 4th January 2021. 03.01.2022 The Albany Community Hospice and the Rural Clinical School of WA are inviting members of the Great Southern Community to take part in focus groups exploring views around the enactment of Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation in WA as it relates to hospice. This research project will assist the ACH Board determine their response to the enactment of this legislation. Community participation is essential. For more information, please see attached flyer on how you may get involved and participate.

02.01.2022 Orthopaedic surgeon Will Blakeney will join the Great Southern Specialist Centre consulting team at the end of June. Mr Blakeney has worked and travelled all over the world to advance his skills and performs all surgery related to the shoulder, hip and knee, including total joint replacement surgery, sports injuries and ligament reconstructions. He also performs adult and paediatric trauma surgery. Please be aware, Mr Blakeney continues to have a public salaried appointment ...with the Albany Regional Hospital and so he will only be seeing private patients at the GSSC who prefer to travel to Perth for their surgery at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco. Mr Blakeney is Albany’s sole resident orthopaedic surgeon and is a local graduate having completed his medical degree at UWA then advanced training in orthopaedic surgery in Western Australia. He has a Master’s degree in surgery from UWA and a Master’s degree in clinical trials from the University of London. He completed fellowship training in shoulder and sports knee surgery at the Santy FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence in Lyon, France. He spent 12 months in Montreal, Canada doing a fellowship in hip and knee replacement surgery and a diploma in hip and knee joint reconstruction with the University of Montreal. He has also worked with top US surgeons doing paediatric surgery at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland. Mr Blakeney will have weekly appointments available at the Great Southern Specialist Centre from the end of June. As Mr Blakeney has a public appointment at Albany Health Campus, public referrals should continue to be sent directly to Albany Health Campus.
