23.01.2022 Happy Shiraz Day! Today were celebrating the Great Southerns iconic red varietal Shiraz! The Frankland River and Mount Barker subregions in particular are renowned for fine, premium Shiraz. These inland vineyards experience cool nights and warm days, with a moderate sea breeze and just the right amount of rain. The ironstone-based gravels and duplex sandy loams lie over sub-soils derived from granite outcrops, making an amazingly peppery, opulent and complex Shiraz. Di...d you know some of Australias best Shiraz comes from Frankland River? Frankland Estate winerys 2017 Isolation Ridge Shiraz took three awards at the 2019 Royal Melbourne Wine Show the Trevor Mast Trophy for Best Shiraz, Best WA Shiraz, and Best Organic Wine. Youll need to shop around to find it, but there is more fine Great Southern Shiraz available. Order online or buy at cellar doors next time youre visiting the Great Southern. #shirazday #shirazwineday

22.01.2022 The wines from Freehand Natural Wine are super-recognisable thanks to their modern and quirky branding featuring artwork from art by LADY Bananas. The Freehand vineyard is in Mount Barker, a region famous for rich marri soils with lateritic gravelly and sandy loams derived from granite rock protrusions. Freehand use natural and biodynamic farming techniques to produce organic, 100% preservative-free wine. This means Freehand wines look a little different too, like their 2017 Cloudy Chardonnay.

22.01.2022 A review so good you can feel the wine swirling around inside your mouth "Another beautiful wine from Great Southern producer 3drops wine and olive oil. "The 2016 Cabernet, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, has a bouquet of blackberries, vanilla and a lick of crushed tobacco leaf; the medium-bodied palate has flavours of blackberries and plums, smooth tannins, little charry note to finish. Bought this Due South Bottle Shop in Albany which has the best range... of local wines you could wish for." Thank you Perth Cafe Culture for this wonderful review! Be sure to check out 3 Drops' range of incredible wines and olive oils for yourself, they also do some gorgeous Christmas gift packs! #wednesdayreview

18.01.2022 The Great Southern may be known for its incredible wines but we also have some spectacular beaches. Lights Beach should be at the top of your list on your next holiday as there really is something for everyone. Lights Beach is actually three beaches accessible from one central car park. Central Beach has large waves and is the perfect place to catch some waves. Not to mention, it has some fantastic views of William Bay and the Southern Ocean. 17.01.2022 Did you know Forest Hill Vineyard was just named in Australias Top Ten Best Value Wineries in Halliday Wine Companion? 70 per cent of their ten wines that scored 95 points or more were considered special value for money. Rating highest was their just released 98 point 2019 Block 1 Mount Barker Riesling. At $55 a bottle this will sell out quickly, so run dont walk! Wine Companion said: The value all Forest Hills wines offer is exceptional, the style that of old money another prime example of consistently extraordinary value. Six wines pointed between 96 and 98 points laid an irrefutable claim to inclusion near the top of the totem pole. Forest Hill has the early days of the Great Southern in its DNA".

16.01.2022 Just as Albany was the first settlement in Western Australia, the Great Southern Wine region played its part in establishing Western Australias reputation for fine wine production. Forest Hill Winery , just outside Mount Barker, was the chosen site for an experimental vineyard in 1965. The Forest Hill winery in Denmark still processes fruit from this vineyard which is the oldest cool climate vineyard in the State. In 1968 Tony Smith established Plantagenet Wines in Mount Ba...rker and continued to develop the recognition of the Great Southern as a great Riesling area. Alkoomi Wines, in Frankland River was established in 1971. Alkoomi has a cellar door in Albany as well as at its winery in Frankland River. Castle Rock is an outstanding geological feature in the Porongurup National Park and Castle Rock Estate, founded in 1983, nestles at the end of the range, and produces delightful and well-respected wines, especially Riesling.

15.01.2022 How gorgeous is this timelapse from Porongurup National Park? The Porongurup National Park is rugged and beautiful, with some of the best hikes in Western Australia, including the Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock. After a day of hiking, visit some of the beautiful cellar doors here, including Abbey Creek, Castle Rock Estate, Dukes Vineyard, Ironwood Estate Wines, Porongorup Ranges, Jingalla, and Zarephath Wines Vineyard & Cafe. ... You can dine at Zarephath and enjoy incredible views across the Ranges. Maleeyas Thai Cafe is also amazing, serving up authentic dishes using herbs from their garden. 15.01.2022 Every spring the Great Southern comes alive with wildflowers, the majority of which peak in September. The National Parks are a great place to start your journey, but there are plenty of smaller reserves throughout the Great Southern where you can discover unique wildflowers and orchids. Most towns have wildflower walks and guides but we have come up with a list of our favourite places to experience this seasonal phenomenon. Come down to the Great Southern and experience ...greatness! https://bit.ly/2WivA04 Photo by @catr13 (via IG)

14.01.2022 Get to know the Great Southern Wine region. The Great Southern lies along the Southern Ocean on the coast of Western Australia. The pristine ocean and rugged coastline is only part of a spectacular natural environment that includes the ancient Stirling and Porongurup Ranges, magnificent forest, visiting whales and a multitude of wildflowers in season.... Great Southern wines are produced in five subregions characterised by unique geomorphic and climatic conditions. The subregions of Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup all produce distinctive fine wines that benefit from cool climate viticulture in a clean and green environment. The Great Southern region continues to develop an enviable reputation for producing world-class, cool climate wines, including stand out Syrah, Riesling and Shiraz.

14.01.2022 Have you seen this landmark before? This is the Point King Lighthouse, located on the north shore entrance to Princess Royal Harbour in Albany. It was the first navigational light for the port of Albany and the second lighthouse built on Western Australias coastline. What remains of the lighthouse is accessible from the Ellen Cove Boardwalk. You can spend hours exploring and taking in the beautiful ocean sea breeze. Sunsets here are exceptionally beautiful, especially pair...ed with a bottle of Riesling from one of the local wineries. Montys Leap also has an exceptionally beautiful Chardonnay that would make the experience even more spectacular! Photo by: @nationalanzaccentre (via IG)

12.01.2022 Wine down Wednesdays are the best days! Another spectacular review of an exceptional Great Southern wine! @qwinereviews gives us the scoop of our favourites! "An outstanding Chardonnay. Named after co-founder Singlefile Wines Vivienne Snowden, this is a Chablis style that oozes class. Just brilliant ... One of 1500 produced and only released in exceptional years, the fruit was hand picked from three different panels on the vineyard between late February to mid-March. Whole bunch pressed direct to new and seasoned French oak, wild fermentation took place on full solids before sitting on lees for nine months, then bottle aged for 29 months. What hooks me in from the outset is the lean and skeletal presence in the mouth. White fleshed nectarines, pineapple husk and green mango shape this wine from the outset. Given some time in the glass to relax, its true personality starts to radiate. A delicate nutty presence is partnered by flint and struck match. Soft textural feels run deep and ooze charisma. Gentle minerally feels lead to lemony tang that lingers long. One for Chardonnay lovers to behold 96pts " Head to their website and get yourself a case today... or even better, make your way to their incredible cellar door in Denmark! Want to be featured? Tag us in your review and use #GreatSouthernWineReview! We love hearing your thoughts on our wines!!

Head over to the blog to read about all the award winners!

06.01.2022 Happy International Pinot Noir Day! To make great Pinot is often considered the pinnacle of a winemaking career. Incredibly fussy about where and how it is grown, the ever-delicate Pinot Noir grape requires patient, skilled handling from vine to bottle. When successful, its one of the most elegant and complex red wines in the world. Today we are taking the time to highlight two special Pinot Noir wines that were given a special recognition by James Halliday Wine Companion: C...astle Rock Estate 2018 Porongurup Pinot Noir and Castelli Estate Wines 2017 Denmark Pinot Noir (which was also recognised for their value for money!) These two incredible wines were made in the Great Southern and were both awarded 95 points by the wine master. Join us in celebrating these two fabulous wineries and their exceptional wines! Grab a bottle at your local wine shop, order online or make plans to visit their cellar doors (located in Porongurup and Denmark respectively). Whichever way you choose to celebrate, its best to do with a glass of Pinot Noir. Cheers

06.01.2022 Ever wondered how a wine producer gets their name? In the case of Singlefile Wines, it is named after the resident geese, whose graceful single file parade takes them to the lake below the vineyard at dusk each day. This picture sums it up perfectly! Singlefile wines are expressions of the unique terroirs of the Great Southern, which impart distinctive attributes to the parcels of fruit that arrive in the winery. It is also one of the finest cellar doors in the region. Make ...sure you stop by on your next holiday. Singlefiles tasting experience reflects the pursuit of excellence in winemaking, which allow the nuances of the Great Southern vineyard sites to shine through in the final wine... and you might just see the geese! 06.01.2022 On top of the world! The ultimate spot to watch the sunrise in the whole of Australias South West has to be the Granite Skywalk in the Porongurup National Park. Reward yourself with lunch and a glass of wine at the picturesque Zarephath Wines. The views are absolutely spectacular and pair perfectly with their excellent hospitality Photo by: @hilaryl_ (via IG)

05.01.2022 A wonderful review of our very own Castelli Estate Wines from the legend himself, Ray Jordan: "The pinots from Castelli continue to evolve. This is made from five different clones with fruit sourced from the Porongurups and Denmark. Perfumed raspberry and cherry notes with a smokey overlay. Into the palate, it becomes quite beautiful with layered flavours, fine silky tannins and a smoky oak cloak. Sappy, lip-smacking finish. " Want to be featured? Tag us and use #GreatSouthernWineReview in your review of wine from the Great Southern! We love hearing your thoughts on our wines!!

05.01.2022 These glorious skies make dinner alfresco extra special, especially when sipping on a delicious drink from Denmark Heritage Cider Co. The Denmark Heritage Cider Company is the only cidery in Western Australia using real cider apples that have been selected for their cider making properties over hundreds of years. They only use apples they grow in their orchard and blend up to 15 varieties of cider apples to balance the tastes and textures of sharp, bitter-sweet, and sweet ci...der apples. 04.01.2022 Have you ever tried the wines from La Violetta Wines? They have a really unique approach to winemaking, explained here by Good Pair Days. "Whilst Australian wine comes in many shapes and sizes, its perhaps fair to say that there is an identifiable Australian attitude and approach to winemaking - and its one which is epitomised by the goings on at La Violetta, the winery run by renowned vintner Andrew Hoadley. Honest, straightforward, down to earth and uncomplicated, the wi...nes of La Violetta have that almost punk-like approach to winemaking which has captured the imaginations of the Australian wine drinking public. These are wines made by instinct rather than by tradition. They arent bound by expectation, and they arent afraid to take risks to end up with the greatest results. Andrew Hoadley has been called an iconoclast of Australian wine, although hed probably be the first to say that hes merely trying to make the kind of wines hed most like to drink. Theyre made with classic Aussie grapes, but they dont follow the rule book by any means - these wines are unfiltered, using grapes which are spontaneously fermented, and only very slightly fined before bottling. The result is a set of wines which have plenty to say about the southern regions they come from, with a real sense of presence and power which is impossible to ignore." Are you convinced yet? Come down for a visit and give these wines a go for yourself!

04.01.2022 These cold nights call for something warm... something like Plantagenet Wines Old Tawny and Muscat. Just add cheese, wine and a good book for the perfect cosy night in. The Fine Old Tawny NV is a deep red colour and has sweet, ripe Shiraz fruit characters on the nose, with rancio and nutty flavours adding complexity and creating a long lingering finish. Perfect for after dinner with hard cheese and dried fruit.... The Liqueur Muscat NV has honey and golden brown hues, with rich raisin and rancio character developed through years of barrel maturation. Pair with pudding, rich desserts and mature cheeses. 03.01.2022 Whether you're having a summer BBQ, enjoying some fresh seafood or just catching up with the girls, you can't go wrong with a Great Southern Sauvignon Blanc @perthwineclub sure knows how to capture a great shot, and write an equally impressive review: "I’m a sucker for Frankland River wines, such a beautiful part of the world and unique wine region. This Ferngrove & Killerby Wines Sauvignon Blanc was a pale straw yellow colour with a slight hint of green; it exhibits note...s of passion fruit, stone fruit and lime zest with a palate of intense citrus, zingy lemon and pawpaw It has a balanced, textural finish with moderate acidity and crisp edges and was a perfect addition to our dukkah-crusted salmon Overall, this wine is fantastic value and would be a very refreshing drop on a hot summers day (like today ) Bonus tip: if you stop by a bottle shop and pick it up while you’re on a run, you have extra weight for your run home which technically means you’ve worked harder and deserve an extra glass! Better get one for each hand to balance it out though " #wednesdayreview #greatsouthernwine

03.01.2022 The owner of Silverstream Wines, Tony Ruse believes A great wine starts with quality soil we have a wonderful well-drained site, our cool climate wines are a direct reflection of this The decision to adopt a biological farming process in all aspects of viticulture was an easy one and Silverstream Wines strongly stands by it. There are now clovers and serradella (both legumes) feeding the inter-row and under-vine and the soil is soft and aerated. Biological (no herbicide/...pesticide) is a continuing challenge with obvious lower yields. What does it mean? Theyve got worms! Worms are found in great abundance in the vineyards where the viticulture is organic or biodynamic meaning that no chemical, systemic sprays are used. Why are worms important? First their burrowing through the soil creates small holes that can be used by tiny roots to provide easy access to lower levels of the soil. Secondly, the earth is aerated by the worms actions forming worm casts that have many air pockets thus making it easier for the roots to penetrate the soil and for water to drain through the soil. These worm casts also hold more water than normal soil. Thirdly worms break down organic matter such as leaves and grass transforming them into nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that are able to be absorbed by the plants. Found a new appreciation for these slimy critters? We definitely have! Be sure to stop by their cellar door to try some of their delicious wines!

03.01.2022 WIN TICKETS TO SEE RAMS You may know Mount Barker as one of Australia's South West's oldest wine-growing region. It’s famous for its fresh country air and stunningly beautiful views of rolling hills against the backdrop of the majestic Stirling and Porongurup Ranges. It's now being put on the world stage as the location in Western Australia for new movie, Rams!... Rams stars Sam Neill and Michael Caton who play estranged (and feuding) brothers, Colin and Les. Raising separate flocks of sheep descended from their family’s prized bloodline, the two men work side by side yet are worlds apart. When Les’s prize ram is diagnosed with a rare and lethal illness, authorities order a purge of every sheep in the valley. While Colin attempts to stealthily outwit the powers that be, Les opts for angry defiance. But can the warring brothers set aside their differences and have a chance to reunite their family, save their herd, and bring their community back together? We’ve teamed up with Roadshow to giveaway 15 double passes to see Rams! Just hit the link to enter and you could be sitting back watching our very own Mount Barker on the big screen! https://greatsouthernwine.org.au/ramsmovie/

Prior to becoming the winemakers they are known as today they were known for their apple orchards.
