20.01.2022 Short Walks | Historic Houses of Carrick Following on from our Historic Deloraine post last week, this week we look at Historic Houses of Carrick. Originally known as Lyttleton, the historic township of Carrick lies 17km southwest of Launceston on the banks of the Liffey River. The town was originally established in 1818 by Thomas Reiby to house the workers commissioned to build nearby Entally House. Of the 20 colonial buildings showcased on this walk, fifteen are listed on t...he Tasmanian Heritage Register, including Carrick House (1840), St Andrew's Church (1848), the Old Watch house (1837), Monds Roller Mill (1846) and the Carrick Hotel (1833). Many of the buildings have been carefully restored to their former glory. Pick up an Historic Houses of Carrick walking map and brochure from the Visitor Centre or go to our website https://www.greatwesterntiers.net.au//historic-houses-of-c. 18.01.2022 Kooparoona Niara Cultural Trail Kooparoona Niara is the Tasmanian Aboriginal name given to the Great Western Tiers and means 'Mountains of the Spirits'. There are many sacred Aboriginal sites within these mountains and the trail was created to share stories of how the ancestors lived and travelled along the river. The trail was initially inspired by local Aboriginal and then Colony 47 employee Greg Murray. In consultation with local Aboriginal elders and community members, th...e project came to fruition over several months with the help of talented local artists, sculptors, metal workers, stone masons and local primary school students. The Trail itself begins at the Deloraine Train (Apex) Park where you will find traditional ochre handprints and native plantings. It then runs along the banks of the Meander River to a stone 'Yarning Circle' near the pontoon. Keep your eyes out for the wonderfully detailed mosaics, traditional bush tucker plants, native animal sculptures and other culture inspired artworks along the way. Walk Duration: 10 minutes Walk Grade: 1. Suitable for all abilities. Wheelchair friendly. Yarning Circle Situated overlooking the picturesque and tranquil Meander River, the Yarning Circle is a place where individuals or groups can sit, ponder, 'yarn', laugh or meditate and is available to all. To book contact the Meander Valley Council on 03) 6393 5300. 15.01.2022 WHEN THE LIGHTS TURNED ON IN DELORAINE. The first town lighting in Deloraine was by oil lamps. Then with the completion of Launceston's hydro-electric power station at Duck Reach in 1885, the Deloraine Council began considering a similar scheme of it's own. Though several proposals were considered, including using the Montana Falls to generate power, it was not until 1906 that the council finally agreed to a plan for a central power station in Deloraine using water from the ...Meander River and using a suction gas plant and engine. The powerhouse and plant were to be located on the east side of the river in line with the water pumphouse just upstream. J.A. Newton and W.C. Cameron were hired to construct the scheme and after a few teething problems, Mrs Cole, the Wardens wife officially switched on the electric lighting plant on the 16th September 1907. By November, the plant was in continuous use for lighting the streets and shops of the pretty village of Deloraine. The power station was thought to be the oldest existing hydro-generating plant operated by a local authority in Tasmania and was in use until September 1928 when the Hydro-electric Company extended it's coverage to Deloraine. Many households in other areas of the district had to wait many years for electricity to be connected. Electric power reached Chudleigh and Caveside in the early 1940s and Meander, Montana and Huntsman Villages in the early 1950s. Westbury had 4 acetylene lamps in William Street at the turn of the 1900s and then electric power to Westbury and other nearby towns from 1928. The old Deloraine power station is located in the heart of town on the east bank of the beautiful Meander River. By Julie. #greatwesterntiersvisitorcentre #historictasmania #meandervalley See more

09.01.2022 Have you been to the Kimberley Warm Springs? It is the only known thermal spring in the North West of Tasmania. The Springs were first used by the Tasmanian Aborigines as a social gathering site as they travelled from the Central highlands to coastal areas such as Port Sorell. Later, it became the site of a Convict Probation Station housing convicts who were constructing a road and bridge across the Mersey river, connecting Deloraine to Emu Bay. The probation station bega...n in 1844 and closed in 1848. Nothing remains of the probation station. The Geo-thermal feature of the Kimberley Warm Springs is the result of water surging upward from at least 350m below the surface into a pool approximately 20m by 13m in size and around 1.2m deep. The site includes a sheltered BBQ, public toilet and car parking. Water from the Springs remains at a constant temperature of 24-25 degrees Celsius. The dissolved solids content is fairly low and contains mainly bi-carbonate and calcium ions. The clearing of shading vegetation has led to excessive algal growth, which is periodically removed to reveal the naturally sandy bottom of the spring. The spring is home to an endemic snail and an algae (Pithophora spp.) It is open all hours and legend says the spring has healing properties. 04.01.2022 CASCADES AT KOONYA Is a beautifully preserved convict outstation that I had the pleasure of visiting a few years ago. Built in circa 1841 Cascades, along with Port Arthur and Eaglehawk Neck was a sophisticated and complex penal colony with Cascades once housing up to 400 inmates. Situated on the shores of Norfolk Bay on the Tasman Peninsula, Cascades was chosen as a perfect site because of the timber in the area and the soil. The compound comprised of the old hospital, "Rot...ten Row", which was the officers accommodation, the convict outstation which had the mess hall, officers quarters, three connected cottages, 9 cells with a brick walled exercise yard and the wooden railway which was a very important structure at Koonya transporting timber from the mountains down to the sea to the steamers waiting at the old convict jetty. Sadly the timber railway no longer exists. Thankfully, these old buildings were fully restored in the 1980s and show one of the best collections of early intact nineteenth century structures in Tasmania. When I visited this important site, it was an award winning accommodation property and the setting by the ocean was idyllic. Now closed, the site is once again silent except perhaps for the souls who long ago toiled there.
