24.01.2022 Even the walk leading up to the treasury in Petra, Jordan is absolutely mesmerising
24.01.2022 The famous Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is a visual showstopper and must see tourist site. The unique blend of Muslim and Christian architecture boasts a forest of marble columns capped by red and white arches. If you look closely at one of the marble columns, you'll notice it's hiding a curious secret.... A small cross is carved into the black surface, and while its age and origins are murky, there are many local legends surrounding the origins of the carving. According to on...e legend, the cross was created by a Christian man enslaved by the Moors during their rule. The man was upposedly chained to th ecolumn and used his fingernails to carve the iconic Christian symbol into the hard, unforgiving marble. The most tragic version of the legend says the Christian man had fallen in local with a Moorish girl who had agreed to convert to Christianity for him. On the night of her baptism she was captures and killed, her body being thrown into the river. The young Christian man was taking into the Mosque and changing to the column where he remained exposed and vulnerable to the public's anger. When his captors realised the cross he had carved couldn't be erased, he too was killed and dumped into the river. The cross is still visible today, protected by a small iron gate and accompanied by an inscription that roughly translated to "This is the Holy Christ made captive by his nail" Read more in the link below! https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/cross-of-the-captive

16.01.2022 Mythology Monday! Poseidon edition... God of the sea and rivers, creator of storms and floods, and the bringer of earthquakes and destruction, Poseidon was perhaps the most disruptive of all the ancient Greek gods, not only for mortals but also to Zeus' peaceful reign on Mount Olympus. Despite the above, the trident bearing god was not always a negative force, and he did have a role as a protector, particularly to mariners, and as the patron saint of horses and horse breed...ing. In Greek mythology, Poseidon was the son of Kronos and Rhea, and brother of Zeus and Hades. He was a key figure in the battles for control of the universe between the Titans, the Giants and the Olympians. On their victory, the three brother drew lots to decide which domain they would reign over, and Poseidon gained the seas. The god dwelled in magnificent golden mansions beneath the sea, beautifully adorned with coral and sea flowers.Traditionally, this undersea palace, which included the god's stabled of fine white horses, was located near Aegae in Euboea. Seemingly not content with the seas alone, Poseidon often interfered in the plans of Zeus, and once even attempted to overthrow his brother with the aid of Hera and Athena. Ut was as punishment for this treachery that Poseidon was made to build the magnificent walls of Troy. _____ For even more information, check out the link below! https://www.ancient.eu/poseidon/ #mythology #poseidon #facts #greekmythology

14.01.2022 The sword King Arthur pulled from the stone in legend was likely just thatlegendary. This sword, with a story equally as unbelievable, actually exists in Tuscany’s Montesiepi Chapel. Galgano Guidotti was born in 1148 near Chiusdino. After spending his youth as a wealthy knight, in 1180 Giudotti decided to follow the words of Jesus and retired as a hermit near his hometown. He began to experience visions of the Archangel Michael, leading him to God and the twelve apostles on ...the hill of Monte Siepi. In one vision, Michael told Giudotti to renounce all of his earthly possessions. He responded that this would be as difficult as splitting a stone, and to prove his point, thrust his sword into a rock. To his surprise, the sword went through the impenetrable surface as though it was water. Shortly after, an errant horse led Giudotti to the very hilltop that had appeared in his visions, where he was moved to plant a cross. Not having any wood handy, he plunged his sword into a rock, just as he had in the vision, where it was embedded for all time. One year later Giudotti died, and in 1185 Pope Lucius the 3rd declared him a saint, and the Montesiepi Chapel was built up around it. Allegedly countless people have tried to steal the sword. On display at the chapel are the mummified hands of a thief who tried to remove the sword and was suddenly slaughtered by wild wolves. Why only the hands survived is unexplained, but they serve as a warning to would-be sword snatchers. These days the sword is protected by a Perspex shield as well as the disembodied hands. While the sword was considered a fake for years, recent studies examined the sword and the hands, and the dating results, as well as metal and style of the sword, all are consistent with the late 1100searly 1200s. While it’s impossible to verify the sword’s legendary history, it does match up with Saint Galgano Giudotti’s timeline.

12.01.2022 Mythology Monday: Medusa In mythology, Medusa is one of the most well known figures. As the story goes, Medusa was the only mortal among her Gorgon sisters, and was also distinguished from them by the fact that she alone was born with great beauty. Her beauty caught the eye of Poseidon, who couldn't resist the temptation and impregnated her in the temple of Athena. Enraged, the goddess Athena transformed Medusa's enchanting hair into a coil of serpents. Her face was so hid...eous and her gaze so piercing that the mere sight of her was sufficient to turn a man to stone. Soon after this, Perseus was sent to kill Medusa, who using the reflection in Athena's bronze shield as a guide, so not to look directly at the Gorgon and be turned into stone, managed to cut off her head with his sickle. As she was pregnant at the time of death, her two unborn children, Chrysaor and Pegasus (the winged horse) suddenly sprung from her neck. Perseus continued to use Medusa's head a weapon to turn men to stone before gifting it to Athena who placed it in her shield. See more

07.01.2022 The olive tree, the most recognisable symbol of peace worldwide, the wreath of victory, conciliation, noble competition, fair play and reward has its roots in Greece. The first tree, as the myth goes was planted by goddess Athena on a rock, in the middle of Acropolis, in a contest with Poseidon. Within the passage of time, the olive tree and its products were identified with Greek tradition and have become a basic component of the Greek diet. The international scientific community considers it a basic health factor. On your next trip to Greece, make sure to visit Crete, the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands, Lesvos, Thassos, Chalkidiki as well as Stera Ellada (Continental Greece) to try the age-old olive oil produced in these amazing locations.

02.01.2022 Santorini isn't just about that stunning Caldera view and amazing sunsets, it is also home to the excavations of Akrotiri, one of the most important and well-preserved prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. Referred to as the Greek Pompeii, this site was also covered in ash after a volcanic eruption on the island, leaving the screenshot of a city frozen in time. Akrotiri was home to the ancient Minoans over 4000 years before Pompeii was even founded, and has been preserv...ed just as it would have been in 1500 BC. In prehistory it was a well connected Minoan port town, with connection to mainland Greece and as far afield as Egypt and Syria. As the town was covered in ash, preservation of the settlement is exceptional, making it one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece. Today the site is covered by a bioclimatic rood and walkways are suspended above the archaeological remains, allowing visitors to walk among the two and three story buildings. See more
