The craftsman Daedalus carved wooden sculptures for King Minos of Crete, while the ancient Greeks made wooden statues. In the Byzantine years the art of wood carving was very flourishing. Carpentry works have been preserved in Greece since the 16th century (church doors, iconostasis, church furniture, etc.). However, the great development of wood carving occurs in the 18th century due to economic prosperity, social upheavals, and building upheaval. In the iconostasis-temples there are themes from the Scriptures, scenes from everyday life, plant motifs, pots, flowers, animals, reptiles, all creatures of nature and imagination. 14.01.2022 To-day is the final day of our display, held with the Greek Museum of Adelaide to commemorate the bicentenary of Greek independence. One of our last visits, hos...ted by Connie Bonaros MLC, was a particularly poignant one as the gentleman concerned was able to show his granddaughter some of the items made by his own father decades ago now. A lovely moment and opportunity for a great granddaughter to see something of her great grandfather’s talents on public display. #saparli See more

13.01.2022 Every single textile in this museum display on the island of Crete was woven by one highly talented woman Chrysi Anghelidaki. She enjoyed a long life - born i...n the small medieval village of Loudra in 1884, she died in Rethymno in 1982. Chrysi Anghelidaki spent her life supporting and promoting traditional Cretan textiles at a time when women were undertaking less and less weaving. As people moved from the mountains into the towns there was no room for a loom in a small urban house. Chrysi responded by showing how the weaving patterns in traditional Cretan ‘kilimia’ could be transposed into embroidery designs. After her death her son and granddaughter donated her collection to the wonderful little Historical and Folklore Museum in Rethymno a real gem of a destination.
