18.01.2022 Archbishop Makarios: We are bitter about 50 years of silence concerning Halki As is known, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia was invited to be the keynote speaker on the occasion of the 50th anniversary since the establishment of the St John of Damascus Institute of Theology at the University of Balamand, Lebanon. The theme that he discussed over the internet concerned contemporary issues in Bioethics. His Eminence warmly thanked, primarily, His Beatitude Patriar...ch John of Antioch for the invitation and wholeheartedly congratulated the new and worthy Dean of the Theological College, Archimandrite Jacob Halil, as well as the professors and all the staff for the work they perform. He naturally praised the work and contribution of the Theological Institute of Balamand to the Orthodox world but, at the same time, he did not fail to express his bitterness for the fact that in a year, it will be half a century since the closure of a large and historic Theological School that of Halki. Unfortunately, it is almost 50 years since the Turkish government closed the Theological College in Halki. Fifty years of silence, injustice and bitterness, he said in his closing remarks and added: But at the same time we are optimistic. We never lose hope. We are waiting for God’s time to come. 15.01.2022 Message from the Archbishop of Australia for the World Day on the Rights of the Child The 20th day of November has been assigned as World Day for the Rights of the Child. ... This day, as well as yesterday and tomorrow, and indeed every day of the year, all children, wherever they may be around the world, hope and envision a better world, for themselves, for their families, for the communities in which they live and for all humanity. And when we, the adults forget, and when we are indifferent, when we become alienated and, in the end give up, they insist on hoping and envisioning a world with more love and compassion, with kindness and peace. A world that seems so close to the one that Christ showed us through his teaching. Therefore, this day, which is dedicated to the rights of children, constitutes an opportunity to think about, and to reflect on our responsibilities to them and to whatever beautiful reality they long to create. We are called to consider that everyone, depending on their position and strengths, must contribute to the formation of an environment which is secure and prosperous, free from all forms of violence and danger. We do not overlook that we have before us a long road to travel, as millions of children around the world continue to suffer abuse, exploitation and social exclusion; continue to face serious risks to their health and lives, growing up deprived of basic goods and freedoms. However, we do not despair and, on the occasion of this day today, we renew our commitment to daily struggle, in the community and society where each of us lives and works. Our Holy Archdiocese, serving with devotion the command of the Lord: Let the children come to me (Mt 19:14), works tirelessly to bring young people closer to Christ and to make Him the precious compass to their dreams in life. But beyond this, however, with our good bishops and priests across the states of Australia, we strive every day to also follow the converse path: that is, to turn our own steps towards the children, so that we can recognise and meet their needs, both material and spiritual, to listen to their anxieties and worries, to offer them opportunities for expression, participation, creation. I hope, with God's help, that we might be able to have added a little stone to the edifice that the custodians of the hope of this world dream of building.

10.01.2022 ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS MESSAGE FOR THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF OXI DAY. The heroic NO of October 28, 1940, is flanked with pride, gratitude and responsibility. These three words which echo through our ears only to travel to our thoughts, overwhelm our very existence today. We stand with pride because 80 years ago the small and poor nation of Greece stood up to the mighty war weapons of fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, only to become an example of heroism and self-sacrifice for al...l the peoples of the world. Reflecting on this spirit of self-sacrifice and strength with which our ancestors fought for our Faith and Homeland, we bow with respect to their memory and express our deepest gratitude. Without their struggle, none of what we enjoy today would be possible. At the same time, we give praise and show gratitude to the Blessed Theotokos for the protection and comfort she gave to the struggle of the Greeks during the epic of 1940. Today's anniversary, which coincides with the feast of Her Holy Protection is another reminder to all that in the critical moments of history, the Blessed Theotokos with Her grace fortified and sheltered the Nation of Greece. As we can appreciate, we have a sacred obligation and responsibility to pass this legacy which was given to us by our ancestors, to the generations that will follow. It is not just dates, names, and "bare" information that our young people need to memorise. Above all, it is the ideals and values of our Nation and Faith, which prompted our ancestors with solidarity to resist heroically and willingly, sacrificing even their lives. It would be an omission if we forgot that the Epic of 1940 and World War II as a whole, were a historical circumstance in which the bonds of friendship between Greeks and Australians were further strengthened after they fought together on the same side of history. With these thoughts, on behalf of their Graces our Assistant Bishops, together with the holy clergy, the monastics and honest people of our Holy Archdiocese, I wish all Greek women and men everywhere around the world, many blessed years sheltered by the Holy Spirit!
