22.01.2022 One of Wagga's most popular cafes from our past was The Ritz Cafe on the northwest corner of Baylis & Tompson Sts. Owned by Wagga’s first female alderman Maud C...hambers during the 1930s-40s, it is probably best remembered when run by Nick & Patricia Georgiou and their family from 1956 to 1969. The takeaway window is seen here c1960, possibly Connie serving customers. Wagga identity Michael Georgiou spent many years working in the cafe before leaving in 1964 to start his own business, Michael's Delicatessen. 11.01.2022 Support Letter to Archbishop Makarios of Australia from the Ecumenical Patriarch His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew sent a letter of support expr...essing his sympathy to His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia due to the increasing spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in Melbourne and the fact that there have been victims within the Greek Orthodox community. His All Holiness conveyed the assurance that the Mother Church and he, personally, are praying for the speedy resolution of the ordeal and for a return to normal daily life for everyone. More specifically, the letter of the Ecumenical Patriarch states the following: With much sadness, we were informed of the surge in Melbourne of the pandemic and that our own spiritual children are among the victims and we express our love to your holy Priesthood and to the flock the sympathy of the Mother Church, as well as my own, with the assurance of our prayers to the Physician of our souls and bodies for the speedy resolution of the ordeal and the return to normal daily life for everyone. Archbishop Makarios immediately responded to the Ecumenical Patriarch, thanking him for his paternal sensitivity and for his support both for himself and for the people of Melbourne, as well as the broader community, which is being tried by the pandemic. , .. . . . , : ' , . .. , , , .

08.01.2022 Dear Members and friends, Given the current health crisis that we find ourselves in, due to the COVID19 outbreak, the committee has discussed the holding of our annual Paniyiri church and community celebrations. The committee has come to the conclusion that due to the risks posed by: - The small size of our church - Potential for interstate travellers, and - difficulties in being able to effectivley ensure that social distancing can take place, the Paniyiri will sadly be can...celled this year. This will be for the scheduled church services, as well as our annual community social activities. It is disheartening to not be able to carry out this annual feast day, however the committee has a responsibility to our whole community, to ensure their health and wellbeing . Notices will be sent out to all members, however we wanted to let people know as soon as a decision had been made, especially those people who may have been planning to travel for the day. Regards, Kosta Papaioanou President Greek Orthodox Community of Wagga Wagga and Districts.
