15.01.2022 Briefing by Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesman Stelios Petsas on July 13, 2020 Hagia Sophia. Since last Friday, the whole civilized world, Europe and the West in general, as well as Christians all over the world and of course Greece, we are in front of a provocation and insult by Turkey and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan that is the decision to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque.... It is a historical mistake and the international community must react decisively. This issue is not between Greece and Turkey; it is a global issue and thats exactly the aspect we have been constantly highlighting, both before and after Erdogans decision. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis strongly condemned Turkeys decision, contacted Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, to whom he expressed the full support of Greece, discussed the issue with Archbishop Ieronymos and took the initiative to contact and consult with his counterparts. Greece considers necessary to send a strong message to the neighboring country that no one can violate international law without consequences. Such actions are blatantly opposed to international obligations and International Law and will have real consequences. Greece has asked the European Union to prepare a complete list of tough measures in case Turkey violates our sovereign rights. Furthermore, Europe should understand that it is its obligation to make decisions that put the brake on Turkish provocation. The issue will be raised today by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dendias, at the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

11.01.2022 Interview given by the Prime Minister of Greece to Bloomberg TV: Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in the context of briefing the international business and investors community - via teleconference - organized by Bloomberg, expressed his belief that Greece, after the successful management of the coronavirus crisis, can achieve an "extremely robust recovery" in 2021. So far the first three months of 2020 have been difficult but not catastrophic. The Greek economy contracted ...at a rate of 0,9%, when the average Eurozone contraction for the first trimester was 3,6%. My explanation for that has to do with the fact that the reforms we have put in place since we have first been elected into power had already delivered very concrete results, the first two months of the year were extremely good and that allowed us to confront the pandemic with some sort of positive momentum. The next challenge for us is rather seasonal and has to do with the way we are planning to open up the country for tourism. We know this is going to be a very difficult year for Greek tourism, we hope to salvage whatever we can, of what many consider to be a lost season. But we have put in place a very detailed protocol, with very specific rules related to how we plan to open up our tourism sector. We hope that we will be able to welcome guests as of July 1st. Greece offers investment opportunities first of all because it offers stability, with the government working with a four-year horizon. As the Prime Minister noted: Greece has a stable and pro-reform oriented government. We have an absolute majority in Parliament. We have three years in front of us until the next election, no other elections, so we have a very clear timetable to implement reforms. Our country has a very skilled labour force, it makes a lot of sense for an investor to be in Greece and invest in Greece and one of the reasons why many companies come and settle in Greece has to do with the human capital. Especially high-tech, RnD focused companies. We have fantastic engineers both in Greece and abroad... So this is not just about our beaches, our lovely weather and our beautiful environment. It is also about the talent, the human capital that we have in our country.

04.01.2022 Education: Greek universities are open to the world The reform of the Greek public education system is a top priority. targeted effort is underway to showcase that the Greek Universities are open to the world. It should be underlined that the Greek Universities assure high standards, although they are not particularly well known in the rest of the world. Following the recent law of the Ministry of Education, Universities can operate in a more autonomous manner, as they are... given the opportunity to develop foreign language undergraduate programs without the need for partnership with the International University of Greece and without the need for approval by the Minister. The new possibilities were highlighted by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who participated in a videoconference with 27 high-ranked American Universities. "In our public Universities", the PM stressed, "there is an amazing talent pool with huge value and potential that has not been sufficiently showcased." Greek Universities are already participating in a European network of partnerships and are now seeking partnerships with American Universities, in a more structured way. The aim is to facilitate a rapprochement between American and Greek Universities, in order to launch long-term common projects, such as preparation of joint and double study programs, participation of students from abroad in foreign language and summer programs in our country, exchange of students, academics, researchers and know-how, as well as other forms of cooperation that the Institutions themselves will decide upon.
