23.01.2022 Newly hatched Greek Streets bees going on their orientation flights around the hive entrance. New season honey is not far away.

23.01.2022 Still a small amount of honey left from the last harvest a week ago.

22.01.2022 Foraging and honey-making as usual for the bees. Possibly the last honey-harvest for the season given I need to leave sufficient honey to get them through winter. Amazingly different flavors from each of the fames that were harvested. ... If you are interested in purchasing some local Lane Cove honey then DM me. As usual the no-human-interaction purchase/pickup is well suited to these challenging times. ~500g jars $10 ~400g 4 x 4 square honey-on-the-comb $10 Best wishes and stay safe. Kim.

22.01.2022 More training today on looking after a bee hive - can you spot the queen?

20.01.2022 Very interesting: Capturing the transformation from egg->larva->bee https://www.facebook.com/NGM/videos/10157369237058951/

20.01.2022 The girls were little put out being moved from their temporary brood box to the new proper Flow Hive box the bottom box) yesterday. Being that this was the friendly hive they barely expressed any ill-will toward me. Today they are all back inside their hive again and have settled into their usual routine. . #urbanbeekeeping #flowhive

18.01.2022 I dont put a wax starter in my frames. The comb is 100% produced by my bees. These two blank frames were placed in the hive last weekend when I removed two full frames. This is the result of just one weeks effort making new comb in the blank frames. Beautifully symmetric. I got stung taking this shot. I have two hives - an angry-bee hive and a happy-bee hive. This is the angry-bee hive. As soon as I took my glove off, they sensed their moment. Looking forward to the day I replace the queen in this hive. Her temperament is passed on genetically to every bee in her hive.

16.01.2022 20 May - World Bee Day. Lane Coves Greek Streets neighbourhood is home to 20,000 more bees than it was two years ago. https://www.beedayaustralia.org.au/bee-involved/

15.01.2022 THEY SWARMED A very very busy time for the Greek Streets bees this past couple of weeks. The hive swarmed - meaning the Queen and about half the bees in the hive left in search of a new place to create a hive. We were at the right place at the right time and saw the swarm in action. It was a truly fascinating process to watch. WE CAUGHT THEM Luckily they swarmed to an olive tree in our garden from which we could brush and shake them into a temporary box. They didnt stay fo...r long and flew off again, this time settling in our lemon tree from which we again shook them into our temporary box. This time they settled and quickly got to work gathering pollen and nectar and making new comb. THEY ARE MAKING A NEW HIVE Just five days later, they have already covered both sides of a frame of fresh wax sheet with comb and have also made good progress making new comb in two fresh blank frames (pictured). They are truly amazing and hard working creatures. The original hive is still going strong with a new Queen, and about half the number of bees it originally had. WE NOW HAVE TWO HIVES We have decided to keep the new hive, created from the swarm, and to upgrade it to be a second Flow Hive. Thus, the good news is that Greek Streets bee population will eventually be twice the size and well have twice the amount honey available. GREEK STREETS HONEY HARVEST WILL BE DELAYED Unfortunately, the weakened original hive will take at least another month before any honey comes online. As promised last month, we will advise, via this site, when a honey harvest has occurred and is available for purchase.

14.01.2022 The bees have gone crazy. And this isnt even scraping the surface.

13.01.2022 Harvest time again this afternoon. Two different frames in the same hive and two different honey styles. The lighter spring honey on the right and the darker winter honey on the left. Different color and different taste - both wonderful. The bees continue to astound me.

12.01.2022 The Greek Streets Bees are going crazy on this, the first day of spring. Hive inspection time. Lots of new young bees testing their wings and orienting themselves. The hive is expanding. The Queen, whom I saw today when I opened the hive, is laying furiously. The bees are busy building new comb and refilling the flow frames. A very healthy hive. I expect the first harvest of the season to be in early October.

11.01.2022 If only the same were true for my other, unfriendly hive. Harvesting 1 frame was enough to raise their ire to a furious level and no amount of smoke would calm them. I assumed the bees in my second hive, captured last spring as a nearby swarm, were related but Im having second thoughts. I cant wait to re-queen this hive.

09.01.2022 Honey has arrived. Newly harvested just a few days ago. 500g jars $10. 4 x 4 ~400g honeycomb square $20. The flavour of Lane Cove spring. Please DM for collection arrangement. Merry Christmas.

09.01.2022 Harvest is imminent. Hive #1 (my original) has frames of honey about a week or two away from being ready....watch this space if you are interested in some honey. Hive #2 (the new one) had its honey super (the box they use to store honey) put on this afternoon so it will likely have honey ready for harvest around Christmas. I was about two weeks too slow in placing this box on as you can see in these pictures. It took a lot of effort to pry the lid off this box so I could ad...d the second box. The comb is not meant to extend past the top of the frames like it does here...the bees were getting impatient and what a surprise I got when I eventually got the lid off. This honey is sweet and floral tasting .... as you imagine spring flowers to be around the local Greek Streets gardens. Looking forward to our harvest soon.

04.01.2022 2-weeks ago I harvested (emptied) this outside frame of honey. Already it is about half-full again and will not be harvested again until after winter so the bees have some honey to feed on when pollen and nectar flows are low. #happybees #urbanbeekeeping #flowhive

01.01.2022 Harvesting honey from my hives is such a thrill. Both my hives were full and the honey flowed, and flowed and flowed. Please DM me if you are interested in purchasing local Lane Cove honey.
