Whether you prefer the lively beaches of South Freman...tle or the more relaxed beaches to the north, you're bound to find a stretch of white sand with your name on it. Go for a swim, grab a bite at a beachside cafe and, if it's late afternoon, settle in for a sunset show like no other. More details at www.visitfremantle.com.au

10.01.2022 Did you know that the giant numbat mural on Henderson Street Mall was painted by international artist ROA? The 25 metre numbat near the side entrance to Fremant...le Markets is now a favourite among a growing collection of street art in the city. ROA is a Belgium-based artist known for painting large-scale images of animals on city walls around the world, bringing nature back to our built up landscapes. The @City of Fremantle commissioned this piece in 2011 to coincide with the Fremantle Festival NB The numbat is a small endangered marsupial native to parts of Australia that has a long sticky tongue, a black-and-white striped back and a bushy tail. @roa_archive (Instagram)

07.01.2022 #flashbackfriday to 4th May 1966 - the Italian Flotta Lauro liner Achille Lauro arrives at Fremantle on her maiden voyage. Carrying almost 1500 passengers, man...y of them migrants, she joined her consort Angelina Lauro on a regular line service between Britain & Europe to Australia & New Zealand. Both liners provided quite luxurious accommodation, at the time, in two classes and replaced the earlier and smaller liners Roma and Sydney. Achille Lauro was the former Dutch liner Willem Ruys and Angelina Lauro the former Dutch liner Oranje. Both ships were extensively rebuilt and emerged with little similarities to their original appearance. A unique feature was their quite distinctive livery of blue hulls and funnels. Also pictured is Achille Lauros Master, Captain L Cafiero, with his two Australian wire-haired terriers, Wendy and Blitz. They were given to him as puppies by a friend on an earlier visit to the port of Sydney when he was in command of the old liner Sydney. The five-year-old dogs had spent all their lives at sea only getting ashore when the liner returned to Genoa. The coloured photos of Achille Lauro were taken on later visits to Fremantle over the years. Many people will remember her being based in Fremantle, chartered by Motive Travel, during the 1987 Americas Cup. Achille Lauro took spectators out to watch yachts on race days and on other days made six-hour cruises to nowhere. Achille Lauro made world headlines in October 1985 when she was hijacked off the coast of Egypt whilst cruising from Alexandria to Port Said. In December 1994, Achille Lauro sadly ended her days when she caught fire and sunk off the coast of Somalia while en route to South Africa. This was some 47 years after first entering service in 1947 as the liner Willem Ruys. The photo of Captain Cafiero is courtesy of The West Australian. 06.01.2022 With a stand out selection of restaurants, bars, pubs and cafes, it's time to rug up and head to Fremantle this August. You might like a freshly baked sourdough... from a warehouse baker, brunch and a latte in a cosy café or a steaming bowl of ramen from a street-side food hall. You could shout your mates a round of craft beer or have a night out with the girls at a Freo small bar or settle in by the fire with a top-shelf whiskey in a seaside pub. Theres $5,000 worth of prizes to be won with two lucky winners drawn every Monday all through August.
