01.01.2022 Hedges are a great way to define a garden. Not only do they look fantastic when done right, but they also make the overall garden much tidier. Hedges also keep plants from flowering and fruiting, which for the Golden duranta (Duranta repens), that’s the yellow hedged plant we have around COFFS region, is a good thing as it is listed as an environmental weed. The reason being is that it’s fruit when dropped by birds can grow and become a problem in our local ecosystem. The fr...uit is also highly toxic, meaning it’s not wise to have them where kids play. Lilly Pillys (Syzygium australe) however, are a native plant and can produce just as good of shape, just not the yellow colour. If allowed to fruit, it’s actually good for our local animals as a food source and if children eat the fruit, no harm will be done.
