25.01.2022 This was the favourite with the students at Darkan primary school on Tuesday (Most thought it was an old microwave as flat screens are the norm these days ) I ran 4 sessions so every student was able to make a small bee hotel to take home to their gardens .... and yes, i slept well that night Email me via my website or DM if you're interested in a visit like this to your school... 13.01.2022 Want to make some Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) tincture? Read on.... My homegrown lemon balm tincture will be ready in about 2 weeks. The fragrant leaves are some of the sweetest smelling of all herbs in my patch. This tincture is great to have on hand for when you need it to promote sleep or to help you relax and unwind at the end of the day. It is beneficial for calming anxiety and an upset stomach. It has antiviral properties and promotes sweating during a fever ...too It's so simple to make; Cut off your younger fresh leaves 3/4 fill your jar with roughly chopped leaves Fill to the top with vodka (40% alcohol or 80 proof) Pop in your pantry for at least 6 weeks, giving the jar a good shake each day. You'll see the leaves transform from vibrant green to brownish as the healing properties infuse into the vodka. It's great to use fresh leaves as they have a lot of volatile oils and aromatics, so a fresh lemon balm preparation will be more potent When you’re ready to use the tincture, use a fine mesh sieve lined with a few layers of cheesecloth to strain out the lemon balm. Use the cheesecloth to squeeze as much of the tincture out as possible Store the tincture in dropper bottles for easy use. It will keep for many years! Start with taking one dropper full at a time to see how that works for you, then take a bit more if you feel you need it. 10.01.2022 Two more bee hotels made today for gifts. This design has always been the favourite of the bees in my garden. Upcycle a couple of 30cm hanging basket frames, get an old catering sized tin of tomatoes (20cm deep) and fill with some drilled wood, bamboo, spent raspberry canes or grapevine cuttings, then cover with some coconut fibre or similar for protection from the sun. Simple, recycled and natural materials. ... 03.01.2022 How happy I am to share these gorgeous snaps from today's Threatened Species workshop out at Perup Nature Reserve!! Seriously..... are kids getting cuter? I think they are. Thank you to my lovely friend Karrie, Blackwood Basin Group, South West Catchment Council and the fabulous home schooling families. It was the perfect morning out in the winter sunshine chatting about ways our gardens can provide habitat and a safe haven for the endemic fauna.
