Visitors to Green Adelaide’s booth at Science Alive had the chance to learn about urban heat mapping and the way cities ‘trap’ heat. Interactive activities allowed people to predict which surfaces and building materials absorb and store the most heat, and then use laser thermometers to test their accuracy. Missed out? 22.01.2022 With hot weather here for the next couple of days, you can help wildlife in the heat by putting water around your yard. Here are some key things to remember: Use shallow bowls to prevent animals drowning OR put rocks/sticks in the dish so that can get out. Metal bowls get hot. Use something that won’t burn your visitors’ paws or feet. ... Put water in the shade, away from people and pets. 22.01.2022 Watch this family of Hooded Plovers on Seacliff Beach yesterday morning captured by one of our trained BirdLife Australia volunteers. These little ones are very close to taking flight. Did you know it takes five weeks for a Hooded Plover chick to reach the juvenile stage, at which they can fly? Being tiny and flightless proves quite a challenge when you need to feed at the water's edge! Heading to the beach? Here’s how you can help, leash your dog, keep an eye out for Hooded ...Plover signs, walk along the wet sand, move away quietly when you spot the hoodies and don’t forget to spread the word! The Hooded Plover program on the Adelaide and Fleurieu coastlines is jointly funded through Green Adelaide and the National Landcare Program. The project is jointly coordinated by Green Adelaide and BirdLife Australia, with local support from City of Holdfast Bay, City of Onkaparinga, District Council of Yankalilla, City of Victor Harbor, Alexandrina Council, City of Marion, and City Of Charles Sturt. 19.01.2022 Flapping for joy maybe?! Here are some of the dedicated Hooded Plover volunteers at our end-of-season event celebrating 14 chicks successfully fledging across metro and Fleurieu beaches! Hooded Plovers are Australia’s most-threatened beach-nesting bird so they need all the help they can get. ... Although the breeding season (around August to March) has finished, the birds and their young are flocking at different sites across the region. Want to help too? Keep an eye out for signs, leash your dog, only walk below the high tide mark, move away quietly when you spot hoodies on the beach and tell everyone you know to do the same! Head to this event to discover the incredible and challenging lives of our beach-nesting birds, specifically Hooded Plovers and Red-capped Plovers. 10.01.2022 Kildare College’s Environmental Group has recently been tackling single-use plastic food waste, such as cling wrap, by making and selling beeswax wraps! Students and teachers in the group spent a few lessons coming up with the perfect recipe (a combination of locally-sourced beeswax and Jojoba oil) and packaged them in 100% recyclable materials, along with a Nude Food (food without packaging) recipe card. The wraps sold out in 20 minutes at the school’s fete, Brigidine Da...y, and the group has since taken orders for a new batch! 06.01.2022 We have our first Hooded Plover fledgling for the season at Basham’s Beach! It takes FIVE weeks for a Hooded Plover chick to reach the juvenile stage, at which they can fly. Getting to this milestone is a challenge, involving predators, such as foxes, and disturbances, like unleashed dogs. Imagine being a tiny bird that can’t fly and needing to feed at the water’s edge on a busy spring or summer’s day! 05.01.2022 Did you know that the Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird in the sky? This bird of prey has been recorded nose-diving at an incredible 320km/h and flying (horizontal) at 110km/h. The Peregrine Falcon, which is widespread in Australia and the world, can be sometimes found nesting on buildings in the Adelaide CBD. ... Breeding season is from August until December, then it takes a month for the eggs to hatch and 35 days for the chicks to fledge.
