17.01.2022 They seem to always know when food is around, but what's the strangest thing your dog has managed to sniff out. We all know dogs have an incredible sense of smell; but it gets even more amazing. Our WebVets have shared with us that dogs can smell disease. The diseased or cancerous cells secrete different waste products to healthy cells, and the dogs’ nose can detect these tiny differences in smell. Amazing!

05.01.2022 PARASITES AND BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS IN CATS This is Calin, who belongs to one of our senior nurses, Kerin. He helped save the life of one our feline patients who was anaemic and unwell. A routine blood test was performed and our unwell patient was diagnosed with anaemia and an infection with Mycoplasma haemofelis. This is a blood parasite classified as a mycoplasma, which is a group of organisms that lack a cell wall. This is an important feature because it makes them resistant... to certain antibiotics. Infection with Mycoplasma haemofelis may be via transfer of infected blood, including parasites like lice, fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Common symptoms of Mycoplasma haemofelis infection include fever, reduced appetite, lethargy and anaemia. Treatment of M. haemofelis is by the use of specific antibiotics and depending on the severity of the anaemia, a blood transfusion may be required. Our patient was anaemic and unwell enough that a blood transfusion was advised. However, blood transfusion in cats is not straight forward as cats have naturally occurring antibodies against the blood group they don’t have. Therefore, both donor and recipient cat must be blood typed and the blood type must match or severe complications can occur, including death. Fortunately Calin’s blood type matched our patients’ blood type and we were able to proceed with the blood transfusion. Our patient was also started on the appropriate antibiotics and he has responded very well and is currently on the road to recovery. A huge thank you to Calin and nurse Kerin and our veterinary team who helped in our patients’ treatment and recovery!

04.01.2022 Being a mother is one of life’s greatest achievements, and we passionately believe that being a vet is the next greatest! In honour of Mother’s Day tomorrow, some of the best new mums and vets tell us what it’s like to navigate the two. Dr. Jessica (Regional Clinical Director and Hugo's Mum) - ... "I think being a vet has helped prepare me for motherhood - late nights, no lunch breaks, being pooped on, and being constantly stressed about what they just put in their mouth! I’m so lucky to have been able to experience both." Dr. Ashlinn (Vet Director & Amelia's Mum) - "I love it! [motherhood] It’s better than I had imagined. Everyday there is a new surprise, a new development, an exciting milestone or a new challenge. Dr. Patricia (Emergency & Critical Care Specialist Animal Referral Hospital & Scarlett's Mum plus pregnant with twins.) "I would have to say being a vet is harder. [than being a mum] I may, however, feel differently when I have three teenage daughters!
