25.01.2022 Neurological manifestations of COVID-19 Article Highlights There is growing evidence that SARS-CoV-2 can gain access to the central nervous system (CNS) and cause a range of neurological symptoms. These neurological manifestations can involve the central nervous system (e.g. dizziness, headache, impaired consciousness), peripheral nervous system (e.g. taste, smell or vision impairment, and nerve pain), or skeletal muscles. Neurological complications can be severe and include... stroke, coma, seizures and encephalopathy. A new paper published in the journal JAMA Neurology summarises the neurological aspects of SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses, including routes of entry and mechanisms of invasion into the nervous system and pathogenesis of neurologic complications, including post-infectious neurological complications. The virus is now known to infect humans via the ACE2 receptor in various tissues, including endothelial cells which are found within blood vessels throughout the body and the brain. Current knowledge suggests that several mechanisms may be involved in the viral invasion of the nervous system. These mechanisms include the transfer of the virus across the synapses of infected cells, entry into the brain through the olfactory nerve, infection of the vascular endothelium, and the migration of infected white blood cells across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The understanding of neurological disease in patients with COVID-19 is evolving, and further laboratory and clinical data are required to understand the pathophysiology and potential for long-term CNS injury. Early detection of neurological symptoms may improve clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients. Zubair, A. S., McAlpine, L. S., Gardin, T., Farhadian, S., Kuruvilla, D. E., & Spudich, S. (2020). 25.01.2022 A little info with some wisdom about gut health and social distancing from House of Wellness featuring myself!

25.01.2022 Thank you to Endeavour College of Natural Health for featuring me in their blog yesterday on Natural Leaders. Little snippet below ... link in bio Born and raised in Hong Kong, Tiffany (Fin) Mackenzie was no stranger to Traditional Chinese Medicine. As a teenager, she had experienced its benefits first-hand when it helped her hives disappear. But Fins family was in hospitality, and she only pursued a natural health career after moving to Australia. I travelled extensively..., and while I was in Melbourne, I went to an iridology lecture. I was fascinated, she said. I kept travelling until I got to Perth, where I studied naturopathy, nutrition and remedial massage. I learnt iridology as part of the naturopathy course, and I use it as part of every consultation to give insight me into the persons underlying health and tendencies. Before finishing her studies, Fin transferred to Sydney. Nowadays, there are so many options for students, but when I graduated, you either went into practice or became a rep. I loved seeing clients, so I rented a room at a multidisciplinary clinic, Fin said. Two years later, I started a Bachelor of Health Science. After that, I did a specialised course in health marketing. It made me realise that I couldnt implement what I wanted to when I was working in someone elses space. One day, I parked my car, looked up and saw a for lease sign on an empty shop window, Fin said. The rent was low, and thats when Green Door Health was born! Fin set up and managed the multidisciplinary clinic with up to 10 practitioners sharing the space. However, at the end of a six-year lease and after the ups and downs of business, Fin decided she wanted to start anew. As a solo practitioner, she had already had a niche in childrens health. After the changes to health fund rebates, she decided to open a clinic and herbal apothecary on Sydneys Northern Beaches to offer clients a new alternative to long consultations. During COVID-19, the business was closed for in-clinic consultations, but Fin kept her walk-in dispensary open. People loved popping in for a quick chat from the door while I make up a herbal remedy tailored for them, #greendoorhealthherbalapothecary See more

24.01.2022 I was filmed the other day in my clinic ... it was an uncomfortable experience to be honest. I am the sort of person who says yes straight away without thinking & later thinks ... why did I do that haha! It was interesting to be interviewed on camera. Not sure what the end result will be like but the interview explores why I got into my profession and a little of my story including my childhood experiences with natural medicine. I will share more when it comes out. 24.01.2022 Happy Halloween Beltane / Samhain ! A three day celebration of death and rebirth, Samhain is a time of endings, reflection of mortality, and releasing that which no longer serves in the mundane world. It’s a time of new beginnings and setting our intentions to focus in a refreshed and renewed destiny. During the season of Samhain, the veil between the world of the dead and the living is at its thinnest. Meaning, communication between worlds comes a lot easier.... #halloween #trickortreat #honouringtheancestors #samhainblessings #samhain #beltaine #paganfestival See more

23.01.2022 About me ... Thought I would share a little. I’ve been a Naturopath for 14 years after ‘accidentally/synchronistically’ walking into an Iridology information session at a Natural Health College open day in Melbourne in 1998. Little did I know the journey I would take ... I didn’t actually start studying until I travelled to Perth the next year. I then transferred to Sydney in 2000 and graduated in 2006 from Naturecare College. I could not have finished without an abiding pas...sion & belief in natural methods to regain health. I truly believe Mother Nature :: Gaia provides everything we need to keep and regain health- herbs, roots, trees, shrubs, flowers, foods, minerals, vitamins & oils. I also believe through learning and practice that most illnesses have a reason/meaning/cause and it’s up to the healer/therapist/individual to try to find the cause. Naturopaths can offer symptom relief that is not suppressive while we look for the cause of your illness & use natural methods that may help you return to health. You need to do the work though. I have had some amazing experiences myself using herbs, homeopathics, foods, colour & energetic healing to heal ‘dis’ease in my body & help with my children’s health. Because of these experiences my faith has grown. I keep learning every day from my patients, students & life. . . #greendoorhealthherbalapothecary #greendoorhealth #apothecary #herbs #medicinalherbs #herbalist #naturopathy #bespokeherbals #customherbals #plantmedicine #northernbeacheslocal #supportyourlocal #northernbeaches #monavale #herbalmedicine #herbalistsofinstagram #bushflowers #energeticmedicine

18.01.2022 What do an onion and a plate of berries have in common? They are both prebiotics! Want to know more? Read on for our blog about prebiotics ... link ^^ Little snippet here ... Where probiotics are bacteria that are alive and health promoting, PREbiotics are the non digestible fibers that feed these beneficial flora. Fermentation of these prebiotics result in the production of short chain fatty acids that are thought to have metabolic affects and also ensure that flora pres...ent in the gut have adequate food to thrive on. Studies have shown that prebiotic fibers like inulin (1) can lead to reductions in body fat mass, improve insulin resistance, help manage diabetes, and have a role in weight loss. #guthealth #cleaneats #fermentedfoods #leakygut #healyourgut #eliminationdiet #sibo #guthealthy #antiinflammatorydiet #guthealing #gutfriendly #kombucherlover #kombuchalife #fermenteddrinks #fermentedfriday #goodbacteria #leakygutdiet #leakygutrepair #healleakygut #leakygutapproved #probioticsupport #probioticsforthewin #guthealingfoods #healingmygut #eatfatburnfat #prebiotics @ Green Door Health

18.01.2022 In part two of SoulAdvisor’s inaugural wellness forum on the topic of anxiety, we heard from a psychotherapist, breathwork therapist, naturopath, meditation teacher, energetic healer and yoga therapist. Each of these therapists provided us with their insights and expertise on ways to manage anxiety naturally: In her practice, naturopath Fin Mackenzie says she is seeing more behavioural issues in young children, especially anxiety, in light of the pandemic. ... Other contributing factors include over scheduling, with children left with no time for free play or playing in nature, too much screen time and poor diets. There is a significant link between the gut and mood. Most people don’t realise that 80% of serotonin is produced in the gut and not the brain, Fin reveals. To ensure good gut health, the microbiome needs to be diverse which comes from eating fruits, vegetables and wholegrains. As a result of deficiencies in our soil, minerals like magnesium and zinc are often required, according to Fin. Fin uses iridology to gain an insight into a patient’s nervous system, gut, lymphatic system, and immune systems and reveals the signs she looks out for to identify if someone is living in fight or flight mode. She also provides a wealth of advice about herbal supplements and tonics to assist with panic attacks and to calm the nervous system

16.01.2022 "Mast cells are a type of immune cell that release histamine and inflammatory cytokines. They play a huge role in endometriosis which is why researchers are on the track of mast cell stabilisers and other new immune treatments for endometriosis. In the meantime, avoiding cow's dairy is one of the best ways to stabilise mast cells, reduce histamine, and therefore relieve some of the pain of endometriosis. It's not a cure, but it's a start." A quote from Lara Briden Naturopath.. which is interesting as it explains why so many people I see benefit from eliminating cow dairy in the short and long term. It may not be an 'allergy' or 'intolerance' per se but a mast cell activation which can cause issues all over the body and also the gut!

15.01.2022 Interesting study below... courtesy of Biomedica thank you Take home note: there may be recognition by the immune system in unexposed individuals because of previous exposure to the common cold. "Importantly, we detected SARS-CoV-2reactive CD4+ T cells in ~40-60% of unexposed individuals, suggesting cross-reactive T cell recognition between circulating common cold coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2."... "Estimations of immunity are also central to epidemiological model calibration of future social distancing pandemic control measures (Kissler et al., 2020) Such projections are dramatically different depending on whether SARS-CoV-2 infection creates substantial immunity, and whether any crossreactive immunity exists between SARS-CoV-2 and circulating seasonal common cold human coronaviruses" Analysis of T cell responses to SARS-CoV-2 produces promising results Article Highlights One of the key and so far unanswered questions about the coronavirus epidemic is what kind of immunity people develop after being infected, which is essential for understanding the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the potential for reinfection. A new study published in the journal Cell provides some promising results on how the bodys cellular (T cell) immunity responds to the virus. Researchers had previously used a bioinformatics tool to predict which fragments of SARS-CoV-2 are capable of activating human T cells. In the current study, researchers tested whether T cells isolated from adults who had recovered from COVID-19 without complications recognised the predicted protein fragments from the virus. Circulating SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ (cytotoxic) T cells, which eliminate virus-infected cells, were identified in approximately 70% of COVID-19 convalescent patients. CD4+ (helper) T cells, which assist antibody production, were identified in 100% of the patients. Researchers also analysed the T cell response in blood samples from 20 healthy control donors collected between 2015 and 2018 and detected SARS-CoV-2-reactive CD4+ T cells in ~40-60% of unexposed individuals. Although these individuals had not been exposed to SARS-CoV-2, they are likely to have been exposed to other common cold coronaviruses. The results suggest cross-reactive T cell recognition between circulating common cold coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2. However, it is unclear whether the observed cross-reactivity provides pre-existing immunity to SARS-CoV-2, and further research is required to assess this. Grifoni, A., Weiskopf, D., Ramirez, S. 14.01.2022 Immunity and Probiotics As promised I said i would write a little about immunity and probiotics: those benefiical microbes that help support our gut health. First of all what exactly is a probiotic? A probiotic is defined as a live organism: bacteria or yeast which promotes health. According to the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics: live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the host... You would know them by common names like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. You may already buy them from the chemist fridge in capsule or powder form and eat or drink them in things such as yoghurt, kefir, kombucha and sauerkraut. All these things work as carriers for the beneficial flora. Food sources are considered a source of live and active cultures but are not strictly considered PROBIOTICS. This is because they may contain undefined amounts of bacteria, species and colony counts compared to a specific strain in a supplement. Both may be considered as therapeutic but because the supplement is more measurable with well characterized clinical effects in precise doses that is what i will be talking about today. I do believe that fermented foods & drinks play a vital role in keeping our gut healthy though. A healthy gut forms a protective barrier against antigens from foods and microorganisms and also plays an important role in immunity. 12.01.2022 Diet, inflammation and nutritional status in COVID-19 Article Highlights Several significant risk factors for severe COVID-19 infection are now recognised, including the presence of existing noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and obesity. These conditions, which are characterised by systemic inflammation, may aggravate and intensify the inflammatory response, which plays a crucial role ...in the clinical manifestations and patient outcomes in COVID-19. A new paper published in the journal Nutrients reviews specific dietary patterns and micronutrients that support immune function, and that may affect outcomes of respiratory infections. The authors review the anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects of the Mediterranean diet while highlighting the adverse health effects associated with a Western diet, including the development of NCDs and the promotion of a low-grade inflammatory state. Essential nutrients and foods that exert anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects are reviewed, including vitamins C, D, and E, zinc, copper and omega-3 fatty acids. The review provides evidence demonstrating the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle to support immune function. It also highlights that additional supplementation of vital micronutrients may be warranted to maintain nutritional status and support healthy immune function, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with NCDs. 08.01.2022 My new blog is out ... read on for a snippet ... Naturopathic Philosophy & Viruses :: As Naturopaths we believe that it is not so much about the germ (or the virus in this case) but about the host. We are taught that the key to resistance is to support the body so that it can use its own innate intelligence to come back to balance and heal from DIS-EASE. Given that this novel Coronavirus is behaving very abnormally, we may need to change our point of view once we have tim...e to review the evidence. But, in addition to the measures already being employed such as social distancing, hand washing and isolation you may be asking: What else can we do? We may have heard there is nothing you can do to support your immunity. Have you heard that? The truth is that we still dont know enough about this virus and how it operates. I am sharing cutting edge information today about what we DO KNOW. But at the end of the day, we all want to be able to keep as healthy as we can. That really goes without saying. So this blog is not about preventing Covid-19 but it is about staying healthy and what we KNOW about how to do that. PLUS I am going to talk about herbal support for colds, influenza & Covid-19 at home care. 07.01.2022 Turmeric has more than 300 compounds including volatile oils, sugars, proteins and resins and owes its bright yellow colour to polyphenolic pigments also known as curcuminoids. Curcumin is undoubtedly a key active medicinal constituent found in turmeric however there is so much more to this vibrant root. Ayurvedic herbalist and cofounder of Pukka Herbs Sebastian Pole says: Turmeric is rather a lot more than curcumin. It makes me think that I want to use a whole turmeric form...ula that brings out the best of the curcumin as well as the volatile tumerone, the resins and other yellow pigmentsHaving been trained in traditional herbal medicine, and the use of whole plants, I am intrigued and concerned by the accelerated pharmaceuticalisation of natural health products. As the insights of traditional herbal medicine reaches greater awareness so our tendency to cherry pick certain herbs and isolate their ‘active’ compounds increases. In this process we miss an essential part of traditional healing that is wrapped up in the synergistic effect of the multi-component and multi-herb formulas used by natural doctors for centuries. The rapid growth in curcumin’s reputation is a case in pointMost curcumin on the market today is extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone or methanol. All have questionable environmental credentials and as this process strips the other synergistic compounds out of the turmeric it often requires curcumin products to then be further processed into liposomes or miscelles to have any significant absorption (as well as requiring toxicological studies in animals to prove safety)Just remember that each and every one of turmeric’s 300 phytochemicals are there to help you achieve success in your clinical practice." thanks to Herbal Extracts & Pukka for the quote See more

07.01.2022 Have you got pets? Studies show that pets can help reduce childrens allergies, improve mental health in older people & that babies birthed at home can also colonise with any bacteria in the room eg on pets & plants. (New research is looking at probiotic sprays for hospital walls & floors to minimise antibiotic resistant strains of superbugs like MRSA) We know microbes in our environment can beneficially modulate the immune system. Im wondering how all this social distanc...ing will affect our longer term immune health? One way to have a positive impact on the microbiome and immunity when our exposure has been reduced is to use #probiotics. I will be writing a blog about this subject next week so stay tuned and make sure you are signed up for our blog on our website - www.greendoorhealth.com.au . . . #guthealth #cleaneats #fermentedfoods #leakygut #healyourgut #eliminationdiet #sibo #guthealthy #antiinflammatorydiet #guthealing #gutfriendly #kombucherlover #kombuchalife #fermenteddrinks #fermentedfriday #goodbacteria #leakygutdiet #leakygutrepair #healleakygut #leakygutapproved #probioticsupport #probioticsforthewin #guthealingfoods #healingmygut #eatfatburnfat #prebiotics #greendoorhealthherbalapothecary

07.01.2022 About me ... Thought I would share a little. Ive been a Naturopath for 14 years after accidentally/synchronistically walking into an Iridology information session at a Natural Health College open day in Melbourne in 1998. Little did I know the journey I would take ... I didnt actually start studying until I travelled to Perth the next year. I also believe through learning and practice that most illnesses have a reason/meaning/cause and its up to the healer/therapist/individual to try to find the cause. Naturopaths can offer symptom relief that is not suppressive while we look for the cause of your illness & use natural methods that may help you return to health. You need to do the work though. I have had some amazing experiences myself using herbs, homeopathics, foods, colour & energetic healing to heal disease in my body & help with my childrens health.

07.01.2022 Catch an article I wrote which was published last week in @bodyandsoul_au about probiotics and a few myths surrounding them. For instance did you know ... Probiotics can help kids, too? Certain types of probiotic strains have been shown to reduce sick days among children as well as the amount and frequency of infections and viruses. Studies have shown that children have less cold and flu symptoms like fever (53 percent), coughing (41 percent), ear infection (56 percent) and... days off (32 percent less) school or day care with probiotic supplementation. Other studies have shown a reduction in antibiotic use in the short and long term (19 percent) for respiratory tract infections and fewer days with symptoms. They cancel out your antibiotics At some point in your life, a health practitioner has probably suggested that you take probiotics following a course of antibiotics, but the best way to ensure that antibiotics don’t get the chance to wipe out your good gut flora is to take probiotics at the same time. They don't cancel each other out and probiotics don’t hinder the effects of antibiotics as long as you allow a few hours between each or take a strain such as Saccharomyces Boulardii (SB), which is shelf stable, and a yeast, which means it’s not affected by antibiotics. 07.01.2022 Childrens Health Day Tuesday 30th June Its our monthly Childrens Health Day again! On the last Tuesday of each month we offer 50% off all Childrens Naturopathy or Nutrition consultations for those that need it. It has been going for at least 5 years now and is always popular and bookings are essential. I was recently scrolling through Instagram (as you do) when i came across an interesting product. Always on the look out for healthy snack options for my child patients ...I found Tummy Gummies: a gluten, dairy and refined sugar free snack thats good for you! We know and the evidence tells us that a healthy gut is vital for a healthy mood, good digestion and glowing skin, not to mention a robust immune system. This is especially important for children and I wrote a blog about it if you want to know more here read this. Because of the importance of gut health for our overall well-being and the added difficulty of getting enough protein between meals I think Tummy Gummies really hits the spot and fills that niche in a fun way! 06.01.2022 An interesting study showing immunity after Covid infection Robust T cell immunity in individuals with asymptomatic or mild COVID-19 Article highlights... A new collaborative study between researchers from Karolinska University Hospital and University Hospital of Wales demonstrated that individuals who have recovered from asymptomatic or mild cases of COVID-19 may have long-term T-cell immunity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), regardless of whether they have tested positively for antibodies. In the study, published on the preprint server bioRxiv*, researchers performed immunological analyses of samples from over 200 people to map cellular and humoral immune responses against SAR-CoV-2. The cohort included; patients with acute, moderate or severe COVID-19; individuals in the convalescent phase after asymptomatic/mild or severe COVID-19; exposed family members; and healthy individuals who donated blood before (2019) or during the pandemic (2020). Individuals in the convalescent phase after asymptomatic/mild COVID-19 were traced after returning to Sweden from endemic areas (mostly Northern Italy). The study results demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells displaying highly cytotoxic activity were a hallmark of acute disease and that the level of CD38 expression correlated with disease severity. In the convalescent phase, SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells acquired an early differentiated, stem-like memory phenotype, and subjects still had robust memory T cell responses months after infection, even in the absence of SARS-CoV-2 specific antibodies. These findings are clinically significant and suggest a previously unanticipated degree of population-level immunity against COVID-19. Until recently, T-cell mediated immunity against SARS-CoV-2 has received little attention. T-cells have critical roles in recognising virus-infected cells and are needed to help make long-lived antibody responses. Further research is needed to determine whether these robust memory T cell responses can protect against recurrent SARS-CoV-2 in the absence of virus-specific antibodies. Buggert M, et al. Robust T cell immunity in convalescent individuals with asymptomatic or mild COVID-19. bioRxiv 2020. doi.org/10.1101/2020.06.29.174888 Important: Preprints are preliminary reports of work that have not been certified by peer review. 01.01.2022 Im so excited to read this book that just arrived on my doorstep ! I have recently been reading and fascinated by Hands of Light by Barbara Ann Brennan and also following @magabalabooks and reading Dark Emu. This type of healing is a traditional but forgotten aspect of natural health not taught at University. Im about to delve into Shamanic Herbalism once more with @wildflowerwalker for pathway two in her wonderful course which I highly recommend if you really want to make ...contact with plant spirit and energy. This was originally how the properties of herbs were conveyed to healers. There is so much magic in this world to be explored. Now more than ever we need to understand that our physical form is only one aspect of who we are - but still a very important aspect and just as important as all the other light bodies that surround us. . . . #greendoorhealthherbalapothecary #greendoorhealth #apothecary #herbs #medicinalherbs #herbalist #naturopathy #bespokeherbals #customherbals #plantmedicine #northernbeacheslocal #supportyourlocal #northernbeaches #monavale #herbalmedicine #herbalistsofinstagram #energetichealing #spirit #spiritguides #handsonhealing #handsoflight @ Green Door Health

Plants underpin all aspects of our everyday life from the food that we eat, to the clothes that we wear,... the materials we use, the air we breathe, the medicines we take and much more. These essential services provided by plants are far too often taken for granted. This is the second annual report in which we have scrutinised databases, published literature, policy documents, reports and satellite imagery to provide a synthesis of current knowledge on the worlds plants." Thank you to https://www.facebook.com/stylecommunications/ We are always striving to be more environmentally friendly and welcome bottle returns for recycling, email invoices/handouts instead of printing & consider the source of the herbs we use. Did you know that some common herbs like Goldenseal and Cats Claw used as mucous membrane restoratives, immune enhancers & natural antibiotics are endangered? Th...ose like Saw Palmetto used for prostate issues are almost all wild crafted from one area and there are issues around sustainability, quality & authentication. Many of the herbs we use here in Australia are not grown here unfortunately & come from all over the world. The American Botanical Council @herbalgramabc has some wonderful resources if you are interested. This is why we may choose herbal alternatives that have similar actions instead of herbs that have sustainability issues for instance instead of Goldenseal I may use Berberis or Slippery Elm depending on the action I want to achieve. This is why if you really want individual care and Herbal Medicines it’s worth talking to a qualified Herbalist or Naturopath about your needs & having a consultation. This ensures that you are under the care of an experienced practitioner who will be acquiring their herbal medicines from reputable & sustainable sources. Want to know more or to book in ?
