22.01.2022 Just a random plant post
22.01.2022 So @matthewtack reckons you should always have 2 hands for picking....We agree. 1 for picking and 1 for eating. #eatingprofits
21.01.2022 Anyone know if there are collective nouns for plants? I feel like a Catalogue of Broad Beans is appropriate as we leaf our way through the patch. #enoughbroadbeanposts #thelastonewepromise
19.01.2022 Pretty sure we didn't build this with support-grade grass. #livingdoorframe #truthwindow
17.01.2022 Welcome to the season of ABP. Sometimes it helps to have some motivation in these busy months. In Jono's head there is a riff on Alec Baldwin's speech in Glengarry Glen Ross. While less ruthless the intensity is echoed: ALWAYS BE PICKING (or planting)! #ABP
16.01.2022 Another week of boxes packed. Almost at our first anniversary and (mostly) through that hungry patch. We've learnt a lot about our patch's capability and the challenges in providing volume and variety (and culinary interest) all year around. Thankfully we live in such a supportive community whose produce and products we've been able to showcase in our boxes, especially during leaner times. Thanks to @ourmatesfarm @getscrumped @fat_pig_farm @masterknife @applewood_and_earth @blackadderisabelle @heartfeltwholefoods #scrubbyhillfarm @ashbrittlefarm @cygnetbakehouse @summerkitchenbakery @nadiaaaad @herring8434 @philly_holmes @salted_mollusc @yvonneherriot #cygnetgardenlarder
16.01.2022 Half of our padrons are under severe aphid attack (pitfalls of polytunnel growing, but not unmanageable). Last year, thanks to the good folks @bugsforbugs we supercharged our ladybettle and lacewings population with some larvae deployed to help our cherry trees under attack. It now looks like the next gen (or probably 12th), having taken care of the black aphids, have answered the call and are marching down the chilli tunnel like a phalanx. They won't beat them off but they are holding them at bay and somehow we are still getting fruit. Fascinating to watch it all develop and glad to feed future generations of helpful critters. #suntzubugs
13.01.2022 We love it when nature sends signals of a change in season or produce coming to the end of its life. Could be flowering, going to seed, pests moving in on spent plants or goats invading your tunnel.....or tunnels enclosing goats . Just kidding (pun intended). We love our curious and cheeky caprine friends. These beans however, are done.
11.01.2022 Back to school for us today. Would be great to see some of our "leaders" get a lesson too. They can't blag their way out of this one, but we can all change behaviours and adapt our culture to one that puts the environment first in all decisions made. #climatestrike
11.01.2022 This polytunnel was built on a gravel pad. 12 months of growing, some sawdust thrown down to absorb the excess moisture and voila clover from nowhere! Not a single seed sown, just tapping into nature's bank. It's not hard to turn this stuff around. #regenag
07.01.2022 We love eating seasonally. Not only because we get excited in anticipation for gorging on tomatoes and berries when emerging from winter and patiently waiting out spring, but also because we get to enjoy the 'bell curve' of flavours and textures throughout the season. Early broad beans are sweet and we eat them like snow peas, pods casing and all, sliced thinly in stir frys. You might need to start podding and then double podding as the season progresses and bitterness increases in the skin. Finally you'd be drying and storing end of season starchier beans for your winter soups and stews. We hope you share similar experiences in your garden or get to follow the journey through your connections to farms at your local markets. #eatingseasonally #supportyourlocalfarmersmarket #huonlocavore
05.01.2022 A sill of squash? #insearchofcollectivenouns
03.01.2022 In the footsteps of faddism, applying Marie Kondo's approach to gardening.....lady beetle you can stay as you spark much joy.
