24.01.2022 I don't know about you, but this has been a tough parenting season for us. The fear is real, the hard conversations are in full swing, and it seems like the sma...llest things require significant cost/benefit analyses. I thought it might be a good time to dig back into The Gifts of Imperfect Parenting research. It's been helping us (huge thanks to all of the research participants). This first learning is a reminder of the core finding from this research: Some of the best strategies rely on modeling the behaviors we want to see. Turns out that we need to be the adult that we want our kids to grow up to be. Dammit. There is immeasurable power in our children watching us practice self-kindness vs. berating ourselves or putting ourselves down when we stumble, fail, or make mistakes. And, no matter how we encourage them to talk to themselves, they are definitely watching to see what really matters. And, letting them in on our process is equally as powerful: "I really dropped the ball today and I'm struggling to be kind to myself about it and talk to myself the way I'd talk to someone I love." Modeling, normalizing that it isn't easy, and connecting. Y'all have a great weekend! Awkward, brave and kind, folks.

23.01.2022 I’m raising average kids. They will not be going pro in any sport. They will not be the valedictorian. They will not be landing on the moon. And they will not b...e President. But I pray that they will be extraordinary at love. They will be the friend who makes homemade soup and delivers it when a family loses a loved one. They will always return their grocery carts. They will mow their neighbor’s lawn or shovel their snow-filled driveway just because. They will know how to listenespecially to those who need it most. They will make time to return phone calls. They will still send cards on birthdays. They will know how to forgive. They will be empathy givers. They will know how to say, I’m sorry. They will know how to act vulnerable and cry in someone else’s arms. Oh, and this one’s importantthey’ll know how to love themselves by giving themselves grace, love, time off, and setting boundaries. Yup. I’m raising average kids. Average kids who will be extraordinary at LOVE.

21.01.2022 As we open our doors next week, welcoming families inside Green Eggs again this is a very important reminder for all.

20.01.2022 Hey Queenslanders were returning to school-based learning. On Monday 11 May 2020, Kindy, Prep, Year 1, Years 11 and 12 students will return to their Queensla...nd state school or community kindergarten, joining children of essential workers, vulnerable children and children in designated Indigenous communities. All other students will continue to learn at home. If low transmission rates continue, students in Years 2 10 will return to school from Monday 25 May. Its important that our schools remain safe and hygienic environments, which is why the following measures will continue to be in place in our schools: Students and staff who are unwell must stay home Physical distancing of 1.5 metres is required by all adults Adults must not congregate in and around school grounds, school gates and outside classrooms Parents should use stop, drop and go rather than walking children into school grounds Effective handwashing and hygiene protocols, including regularly washing hands with soap and water or using hand sanitiser and covering coughs and sneezes Increased cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as light switches and door handles Strict hygiene protocols in place for the use of school equipment, including musical instruments, books, gym gear and playgrounds School swimming pools remain closed and excursions, camps, trips and interschool activities postponed. We know youll have lots of questions so were going to bring more info to you later in the week, in the meantime you can read all about the changes on the Queensland Education website here: www.qed.qld.gov.au You can also check out updates from our Education colleagues via their Facebook page Queensland Department of Education

11.01.2022 Children need lots of unstructured #play time to benefit their developing #brains, and they tend to have a natural awareness of what they need to naturally grow... up healthy and strong. Every child develops in a particular pattern. For example, they have to be able to sit up by themselves before they can crawl and eventually walk. And this is part of why a child naturally progresses to loving swinging sensations when they are in the midst of developing coordinated motor movements. Their sensory system is ready to organise and interpret moving information, and swinging is a fun way to do that. The #proprioceptive system, located within muscles and joints, provides a child with a sense of body awareness and also detects force and pressure while they swing. Meanwhile, their developing #vestibular system, located in the inner ear, detects movement and gravitational pull. The timely development of these senses can help a child learn to calm down if they are easily overwhelmed by sensory stimulation, or can help bring alertness to a child who needs sensory stimulation to facilitate attention and learning. The balance that feels so natural to an adult is a complex process where large groups of muscles work together to maintain postural control. Its very easy to forget how much we all loved swinging when we were little, or to minimise it as frivolous play without serious and necessary developmental benefits. If your child loves to swing, try to make some extra time for them to explore this super-activity. You will be helping their little brain grow in harmony with their body, and they will love you for it. #neurochild #childdevelopment #letthemplay

09.01.2022 This is so significant for our families as we are again transitioning back into the centre for family members. This had been our first week. It has had its challenges and its celebrations. Please help to support the capabilities and resilience your children have gained over the past months. Walking into the centre, carrying their own bags, sanitising their hands, putting away their possessions and collecting them at the end of the day to go home. Your children are capable, confident and amazing... but you have to be that too...this is a great read.

03.01.2022 Remembrance Day. Today we all paused for a minute's silence at 11am. The children layed a wreath and placed poppies in our tree. We listened together in silence to the Ode of Remembrance. Lest We Forget.

03.01.2022 Frustration is the root emotion that drives tantrums, upset, and aggression. It is often misunderstood as anger which will prevent us from working at a root lev...el to restore balance, perspective, and rest to a child, teen, or adult. Frustration is the emotion that drives us to change the things that dont work for us or that need to stop. Sometimes we need to be the one to change. Adults can help children have a relationship with their frustration which will help them emotionally mature.
