16.01.2022 Arena Maintenance Rain messed with your riding schedule? It can make a mess of your arena, too. If the recent deluge has left your surface damaged, uneven, and soaked, it's a good time to consider our arena maintenance service.... We've managed to keep our arena in tip-top shape with our awesome TR3 specialty machine, and we're already back to riding on it. It's great for tackling shifted sand, high and low spots, and uneven surfaces, and a level, freshly maintained surface will dry out much faster, so you can get back on track quickly. General arena maintenance service also available. If you'd like to get booked in for an arena maintenance service or have a chat about what we can do to help, get in touch with Gerry by messenger or on 0499 555 239.

10.01.2022 Overgrazing: do you do it? It can be a very hard thing to avoid, we know, but implementing procedures on your property to stop overgrazing is very important for your horses as well as your topsoil. Once you overgraze your paddocks, you can reduce the ground cover so much that your topsoil no longer has anything holding it in place. ... You might think that doesn’t really matter--you can just add more topsoil, right? Well, not really. What many people aren't aware of is that adding sufficient topsoil/organic matter to your ground to repair it after overgrazing can run into the thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, we see this often, and it becomes increasingly difficult (and more expensive) to fix your soil if you continue to allow overgrazing. Fortunately, there are ways to help. When you look at your grass, if it’s getting down to about 4 inches (10 cm) in remaining length, you're on your way to overgrazed and stressed grass. This is where you now need to think, have I got somewhere else to put my horses so the grass can be allowed to rest and regrow? Have a look at your property. What procedures can you implement to prevent this? Can you create 'sacrifice paddocks' that can take up the slack when your best pastures need to rest? There are lots of options to help you maintain healthy grass and prevent expensive topsoil loss. Take a look at your property today and consider your needs and goals. Is the way it's set up going to produce maximum yield and longevity, or is there a better option? Get in touch with us if you'd like to discuss repair, or keep an eye out for more tips about maintaining what you have.

10.01.2022 Happy New Year’s to all of our clients and your families . Let’s ring in 2021 tonight and let’s hope she will be a lot less stressful than 2020. Have a great evening everyone . see you all in the new year

09.01.2022 OVERGRAZING: The next thing to consider. If you're looking at your grass as something that will automatically come back each year as long as it rains, you may need to reconsider. There is so much to look at when we talk about overgrazing, but today we're focusing on allowing your grass to grow. Here's some starting points to think about.... When your pasture is constantly grazed, none of the grass is allowed to come to a seed head. A seed head on the grass is what allows the grass to continue to grow year after year, as this is how it re-seeds itself. Horses are particularly hard on the grass, as they pull a lot of species out by the roots. Horses also graze the grass down a lot shorter than most other animals, and this can damage the root system and allow it to become unstable and easily pulled out. This can also contribute to the topsoil concerns mentioned last week. Horses and other animals are heavy. and their weight can damage your grass and its root system so that it will eventually need replacing. The continuous production of nice. thick, grassy paddocks requires not only maintenance, but also the adding of new grass seeds regularly. If you're unable to allow your grass to grow long enough to produce a seed head regularly enough, it will be even more important to add extra seed every year. Taking care to use a variety of species when planting, such as thicker, low growing varieties as well as longer varieties with large seed heads, can help increase the regrowth rate of your grass. Ensuring all or most of the species you plant are easily palatable to horses (or other animals where appropriate) can help prevent selective grazing and increase the usability of your pasture. There are many different grass species, and the ideal choice depends on your needs. We have everything from high-yield single-season only grasses, through to perennial (annually growing) grasses, winter and summer specific species, species with a lower sugar content, or lower oxalate level, etc. The list goes on, and the options are many. So, try not to look at your pasture as a continually self-regenerating thing. It's not, and without care, one day it will not come back. If you have horses or other animals, and you live on property, you are now the farmer for your grass! Take care to treat it well, so it gives you the best yield possible. Keep an eye out for more tips about overgrazing and pasture maintenance and repair, and give us a call if you'd like to discuss how we can help you get the repair process underway.

08.01.2022 Thinking about the coming cold season? We are too! When choosing your grasses for winter pasture, it’s helpful to look at the most economically viable options so that you can extend your budget a little bit further. At a glance, Barberia Ryegrass:... Is cost effective to plant because the seeds are cheaper than most other varieties. Quickly produces a high quality, high yield product, which helps save you money on hay and other supplemental feeding, and protects your summer grasses when it's too cool for them to thrive. Is endophyte free, so it's horse safe. Is more palatable than other ryes. Lasts from three to five years with proper maintenance, meaning you won't be up for re-seeding immediately. Loves water and is heat tolerant, so is perfect for this year's expected wet winter, and will last as an extra variety through the warmer months, too. The comparison picture below shows one of our pastures with minimal management and with aeration alone, as well as a pasture planted with Barberia Ryegrass, so you can see how beneficial it is. We are taking bookings now for winter grass seeding starting in April. To make a booking or have a chat about your needs, get in touch with Gerry by messenger or on 0499 555 239. To learn more about Barberia, visit: https://barenbrug.com.au//pas/hybrid-ryegrass/barberia.htm
