25.01.2022 It’s Weedy Wednesday! Introducing Asphodelus fistulosus (onion weed). A common weed in southern parts of Australia, onion weed is a weed of bushland, overgrazed... pastures, roadsides and disturbed land. Can reshoot from cut fragments but mainly by seed. Seeds may be dispersed by wind, water, machinery, in agricultural produce and mud attached to animals and vehicles. Dense infestations of this species grow so thickly that the cover of other vegetation, particularly grasses, is reduced. These infestations eventually lower soil nitrogen levels, preventing other plants establishing and competing with this species. Trees For Life (SA) can help you control this weed: - Phone us on 08 8406 0500 for professional weed eradication. - Attend a bushcare workshop to learn about general weed control on your property or in native bushland: https://goo.gl/xGxRwv. - Volunteer in our Bush For Life program to help protect native bushland from these weeds: https://goo.gl/pK2G4Y. Identification: Onion weed is an upright, tufted, dark green, annual or short-lived perennial herbaceous plant to 75 cm tall. It can be either short-lived or long-lived depending on the environment in which it is growing. Its onion-like leaves are smooth, hollow, cylindrical and elongated in shape and emerge from the base of the plant. Flowers 1.9 cm across, alternately arranged along the branched upper parts of its smooth and hollow stems. Flower stems to 40 cm tall. The flowers are white or pink and have six 'petals', each of which has a reddish stripe down its centre. Fruit are spherical and divided into three segments. Seeds 3 mm long, dark brown to black, triangular and wrinkled. Seeds will remain viable in the soil for many years and can germinate at any time of the year but mostly in late summer to autumn. Once established, it is drought tolerant. Distribution: SA, NSW, Qld, Tas, Vic, WA. During a recent survey, onion weed was listed as a priority environmental weed in three Natural Resource Management regions. It is particularly abundant in disturbed sites, along roadsides and in overgrazed rangelands but also grows in a wide range of native habitats. Suitable native alternatives: Daisy-bush (Olearia spp.), Sturt’s desert-pea (Swainsonia formosa), brush wire-grass (Aristida behriana), spear-grass (Austrostipa spp.), bulbine lily (Bulbine bulbosa), wallaby-grass (Rytidosperma spp.), windmill grass (Chloris spp.), native wheat-grass (Anthosachne scabra), native primrose (Goodenia spp.). #TreesForLifeSA #WeedyWednesday Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board

14.01.2022 Moths may seem like a less interesting butterfly but if you’re taking that stance, we’ll assume you haven’t seen these gorgeous ones taken by, you guessed it, M...artin Stokes. And if all the moths you’ve seen seem a little dull, take a moment to appreciate that their appearance may be a clever way of blending in with their surroundings. This article by Butterfly Conservation South Australia (https://bit.ly/2XUnsUZ) explains that it’s the night moths that are usually ‘drab coloured’, although the undersides of their wings may be colourful, and that daytime moths ‘can be as brightly coloured and just as beautiful as butterflies’. Taken any great moth or butterfly shots lately? Show us in the comments below! #natureathome

08.01.2022 Today's knockout native is Bursaria spinosa subsp.spinosa! Sweet bursaria isn’t as sweet as it looks; this shrub or small tree comes armed with spines up to 1...cm long! Indigenous people enjoyed the copious nectar from the masses of creamy flowers, and the wood was used for tools and weapons. It’s found in all areas of Australia except the NT, and is a known food plant of the rare Eltham copper butterfly. by Westgate Biodiversity: Bili Nursery & Landcare See more

01.01.2022 NOT EVERY WHITE BUTTERFLY IS A 'CABBAGE WHITE'. Some white butterflies are NATIVE and their caterpillars won't ruin ANY of your veggies! The 'Cabbage White', ...an introduced European pest, has pale dirty-yellow hind-wings with grey markings and will readily hang around the nearest patch of cabbage-related plants. Only the male of the 'Yellow Albatross' looks similar but is a little larger and usually has a bright yellow lower hindwing and crisp black markings (the female looks quite different). All species of 'Pearl-White' butterfly (which are all VERY similar) are only a little smaller than a Cabbage White but they have pearly" or "chalky" white hind-wings and don’t have any spots on their upper wings. The 'White Migrant' is larger than all the others but has very little in the way of markings on it’s underwings at all, and it’s upperwings very rarely open except in flight.
