25.01.2022 Tasmanian tourism operators - have you applied for the $750 grant for small business advice yet? This is part of the State Government's recovery program to help businesses get back on track from the disruption of Covid-19. It's still open for applications until 22 February (happy birthday to me ) and I'd hate to see you miss out. Shameless plug - why not book one of my one-page marketing plan sessions and I'll work with you to get your business marketing on track? This is an eligible activity under the guidelines Eligibility 4.5. To be fair, even if you don't hire me, at least make sure you apply for the grant!

25.01.2022 This is an important message from Kate. Consumers, PLEASE book direct and ensure that 12-15% commission stays with the operator. But equally operators, be aware of the conditions of your contract and ensure price parity with OTA's. If you undercut them they will come down hard on you, possibly even de-list you. If a consumer asks you to meet the same price as an OTA, do it, but don't undercut.

20.01.2022 Fantastic work St Helens!! Winning the inaugural Top Tassie Tourism town is a great honour and recognition of some wonderful experiences to be had in the beautiful coastal town of St Helens. Well done to the people behind the submission too. I know how hard submissions like these can be to pull together to make it look effortless.

18.01.2022 ***To all Tasmanian Tourism Operators*** Help your customers and please ensure you and your staff provide the correct details on your RECEIPTS during September, October and November. To redeem the travel vouchers consumers MUST show ... ‘Proof of purchase’ which means a document issued by the eligible cctivity provider and can include a Tax Invoice; Invoice; Receipt and can be printed or hand written so long as it includes the following information: 1. ABN 2. Business Name 3. Amount paid 4. A description of what was purchased (itemised if more than one item) 5. A receipt; invoice or reference number 6. Words that confirm status of payment, e.g.‘paid in full’ 7. Date of transaction 8. Date of stay, e.g. check in and check out date of accommodation Many businesses don't put this level of detail on their receipts/invoices. So to avoid a bunch of customers having to get back in touch with you to reissue or provide details, make sure you're on the FRONT FOOT with this and provide all this from the outset to every customer whether they have vouchers to redeem or not. Thanks! More info on the T's and C's here: https://buysomethingtasmanian.com.au/tourism/voucher-terms/

18.01.2022 Please complete this survey if you live in Tasmania. The questions are about your health and wellbeing both before and during the pandemic. The insights gleaned from our responses will help inform and direct government response to the current crisis and beyond.

16.01.2022 Woah. My group wrote about Tjapukai as a case study in our unit for the Grad Cert recently. This news is truly sad and unfortunately Tjapukai will probably be one of many tourism attraction closures to happen in 2021. Business owners, reach out sooner rather than later before things get beyond help. There are plenty of people and organisations that could work with you to help get through this period. 16.01.2022 I heard a story tonight about a Hobart-based business who made a tactical error. They probably don't even realize. They accepted a lunch booking online, which appeared to be confirmed to the customer. Said customer then turned up at appointed time only to find out there was a private booking and they 'should have read that in their socials'!! OMG the gall of these people to assume a customer checks a social media feed even though they made a booking on their website! The customer was so appalled at the lack of apology and this response that they will never go back. Moral of the story: never expect customers to do all the work, and take responsibility when you stuff up!! A sorry, and a voucher for their next visit would have been an appropriate and acceptable response.

15.01.2022 Finding ways to encourage your customers to spend more while with you in your business is key to making a profit. This simple idea introduced in Israel in 2015 (why haven't I seen these here yet?) encourages shoppers to charge their phone while shopping. And of course it makes sense if you want a full battery you'll stay in the supermarket longer. The longer they stay the more they'll spend. How can you encourage people to spend longer with you and spend more?

15.01.2022 COVID-19 has obviously had a massive impact on the tourism industry, but what could the recovery look like? If a vaccine becomes available and the impact on Australia is mild, Deloitte report suggests domestic travel will be back to 2019 levels by 2022! Download the report to see their predictions for tourism post-Covid. https://www2.deloitte.com//covid-19-recovery-tourism-secto

14.01.2022 Having attended one of the workshops to come up with a name for the new mountain trails, I said the same thing then that I say here: while it would be fun to come up with a cute/clever name for the new trails in George Town, the reality is, the name needs to be easy to recall and search. So many of the best MTB trails are simply named because it's easy. Blue Derby is shortened to Derby, St Helens, Maydena, Rotorua etc are all simple easy names to recognise and remember. Nami...ng the actual trails though - this is where the fun can be had and stories told. For the overall trail network and two trailheads, my opinion is it should be kept simple and not to overcomplicate it by dreaming up some new name that is hard to place. "George Town Mountain Bike Trails", while simple, is my vote. I also suggested Kanamaluka Trailhead for the Mt George trails and to keep Tipogoree Hills for the other one as it's already started to be used. We'll see what they end up deciding on!

12.01.2022 Update your details!!! If you operate a tourism business in Tasmania I can't emphasise enough how important it is to keep your website, ATDW listing, OTA listings and social pages current. Whatever Covid worksafe procedures you've put in place, change in product offering or operating hours all need to be clearly outlined and easy to find. Most importantly they need to be consistent, so when you update one, update them all! If you force potential consumers to have to dig around for this most basic of information you'll lose them. Have a great weekend!

12.01.2022 Covid safe workplaces are still super important especially with borders opening soon. Make sure you AND your staff are on top of cleaning and hygiene requirements but also please continue to offer a warm Tassie welcome and make sure visitors know you appreciate them. Take a look at this great 5 minute video from TICT for more information.

11.01.2022 With all the Make Yourself at Home vouchers snapped up already, I hope all the Tasmanian tourism businesses out there have checked your website booking platform is working effectively, your details are up to date, your offers are enticing and value for money and your social media posts reflect exactly what's on your website. Don't miss out on those about to start travelling because you didn't communicate your offer properly. If you want to discuss your offer for a Tasmanian, get in touch, I'm happy to be a sounding board for your ideas. Good luck out there!

08.01.2022 Did you know Visit Northern Tasmania (VNT) has an absolutely amazing itinerary maker on their website? I have to confess I did know about it, but didn't really give it a lot of time, because set itineraries never interest me - there's always stuff included that I don't want to do and I have then go and find something to replace boring suggested inclusions with so I tend to avoid them. But, mind blown, this morning I played around on the itineraries page and discovered the f...Continue reading

03.01.2022 Excellent example of tapping into celebratory days for a tourism business. Father's Day and a free train ride = tick! But from a business point of view, maybe they could have bundled another product/experience with it to make a complete Father's Day gift and rather than simply giving away the $10 on the ticket, earned it back from some sort of special experience on the day?

03.01.2022 Tasmania's borders remain closed until at least 1 December, 2020. Read the release to learn a bit more what the government are offering in the way of incentives to Tasmanians in an effort to help our tourism operators. More to come on how this will work...

02.01.2022 Did you know the most liked filters on Instagram are Clarendon, Gingham and Juno? I also use Rise and Mayfair quite a lot too.

02.01.2022 During Covid last year University of Tasmania offered free places on a new Graduate Certificate of Tourism, Environment, Culture and Heritage. It had been a while since I'd done any tertiary education, so decided to get the three units done in the one semester (having received advanced standing for the marketing unit). If anyone is considering doing this, I believe it was well worth the time for me, I learnt heaps and really enjoyed connecting with the others also doing the course, even if it was by zoom. Plus, my brain definitely didn't atrophy whilst not doing all the work I was supposed to be doing that got cancelled. Now to decide if I keep going with the Master degree...

02.01.2022 This year's Tasmanian Tourism conference is a little different. Split over two days and two cities. Limited numbers. Lots to talk about. I'm presenting at the Launceston event with Jake Smith on 10 things you should be doing in your business right now. I'll be focussing on free and effective things that small businesses should do - Jake will look after the big end of town. How to choose my top 5 though!?
