20.01.2022 Valerie Pearson is a regular at Brisbane City Council's Green Heart Fair, and she's here to help you live more sustainably at home She's kindly shared with us her DIY recipe for beeswax wraps What you need ... 20g Natural Beeswax 8g Pine Resin 1/2 tbsp Jojoba Oil 1 x 30cm/30cm 100% cotton fabric (try upcycling some old fabric!) Instructions 1. Preheat your oven to 100C or 210F. 2. Line a baking tray with tinfoil. This will protect your tray from the mixture which can be very difficult to remove. 3. Place your cotton fabric on top, making sure that it fits comfortably. 4. On a low heat, melt your pine resin and beeswax in a stainless steel pot. Melt slowly, otherwise the pine resin will caramelise and no longer melt. As soon as it is all melted take off the heat. 5. Add in your jojoba oil and mix. 6. Using a brush that is clean but you arent very attached too, brush on the mixture on your fabric. Start off with a thin layer that just coats the whole sheet. If it is too thick it leaves a waxy residue on your container that you are attaching it to and it sticks to your hands as well, not very desirable. 7. Put this in the oven for a maximum of 1 minute. Take out of the oven and either using your fingers or tongs, hold your beeswax fabric by the top two corners and peel off the tin foil. 8. Dry your beeswax wrap by swishing it in the air. Once cooled hang it up for a couple of hours to fully set. Repeat the process to expand your beeswax wraps collection! Check out more of Valerie's delicious recipes and eco DIYs here https://livingsimplywithvalerie.com.au/

16.01.2022 Brisbane City Council's Green Heart Fair wouldn't be the same without our green thumb gurus like Annette McFarlane sharing their wisdom with us Annette shares how you can stay sustainable at home by growing your own herbs and veggies, or brightening your home with indoor plants If you are new to gardening or are yet to catch the bug, what herbs and edibles should you plant now? ... Annual basil is popular. It can suffer from the cold, but if you have a warm sunny balcony you will be able to coax it through a balmy Brisbane winter. Coriander herb loves the cool. If you have struggled to grow it in the past, now is the time to try again. It is best to buy a small pot, rather than seedlings - it hates root disturbance. Curly parsley and Italian flat leaf parsley love water and nutrients and they thrive in the winter. Consider growing three plants of each. You will find yourself using so much when you grow your own! It is best to make sure that no one plant is over-harvested. Always pick the outside leaves. Dill is another herb that thrives when temperatures are cool. It grows easily from seed, so pick up a pack this weekend. Sow half the pack of seed immediately and use the rest in six weeks time for a successive harvest. Onion and garlic chives are perennial plants are very easy to grow at any time of year. They prefer full sun and the best way to harvest is to use scissors to cut them right to ground level. This encourages fresh regrowth. Thyme is a herb you can sneak into any pot. Combine it with petunias, begonias and alyssum to create a decorative hanging basket. There are dozens of thyme varieties. Look for pizza thyme, lemon thyme and barbecue thyme. When it comes to vegetables, lettuce, spinach and silver beet are quick repeat harvest crops. In just a few weeks you will be harvesting delicious fresh greens. Why not try your hand at tomato growing? All you need is a sunny balcony and a large pot. Just remember to apply liquid fertiliser to your leafy vegetables and tomato plants each fortnight. All you have to do then is stand back and watch them take off! All of these herbs and vegetables are suitable for pots or planting in gardens. And what are the best indoor plants for a beginner? You cannot go wrong with the deep green leaves of cast iron plant (Aspidistra); Zanzibar Gem (Zamioculcus) or the striped foliage of ribbon grass. Just a word of warning - gardening is addictive; but there is no better pastime to engage in during COVID19 downtime.

05.01.2022 Happy International Compost Awareness Week Are you a composting veteran, just starting out, or don't know which system is right for you? Our friends at Rocky Point AU are composting champions and have shared their tips with us What is compost and how do I create it? ... You can create compost from anything that was once living. Naturally occurring composting can take years depending on the materials but as gardeners, we can accelerate this process via home hot composting techniques. Why Compost? Creating your own organic matter in the form of compost can be easily achieved once you know how, and it means that you are recycling large percentages of your own garden and kitchen waste. This is essentially what we call closing the loop. Food and green waste from your home and garden is being composted onsite and then added to the soil to grow more plants that will potentially produce more ingredients to create more compost. All of this reduces the amounts of waste from your property that ends up in landfill. Adding organic matter to your soil, improves the soil health in the short and the long term. It increases the number of good soil microbes and beneficial fungi, all which equate to better plant growth and health. It will also help your soil to hold moisture, minerals, and increase the capacity of plants to take up these nutrients and water. 03.01.2022 You may recognise Mallow Sustainability from our waste sorting stations or their stall at Brisbane City Council's Green Heart Fair They also compost all of our organic waste and run our mug library Their advice for staying sustainable at home?... Composting at home Start a simple compost pile in your back yard, on the ground and cover with hessian bags, a tarp or a layer of grass clippings. You don't have to buy a compost bin. If you live in an apartment you could try worm farming. Collect your food scraps and mix it with grass clippings, dry leaves and shredded paper. Try and have at least half food waste and half green waste and remember to mix it well. Make sure your compost pile stays moist by adding water if needed and aerate your compost by turning it as much as possible. This will prevent odour and make quality compost. Your compost will be ready in about 8 weeks and can be used in your garden by digging it into the soil or top dressing the ground around trees and plants. Worm farming at home You can use a worm farm or you can use an old tub or some buckets. In winter they can be in a little bit of sun but in summer they need to be in full shade. If you have a back yard you can even start a worm pile on the ground and cover with hessian bags, a tarp or a layer of grass clippings. You can find composting worms at your local nursery or online. Start with around 1000 worms. Collect your food scraps. Worms don't like acidic foods (such as citrus) and you can't use onions or really starchy foods like bread. Worms like veggie scraps (like lettuce and potato peelings). Egg shells can also be used. They will chew through smaller pieces faster so try not to put big pieces of food into the worm farm. Use some coconut coir or some compost as bedding. Place this on your top layer of your worm farm or if you are doing a pile put it under the food scraps. Cover the food scraps to make it dark and quiet for the worms and keep the worm farm moist, like a wet sponge. Try not to let it get too wet, especially if you are using a tub or bucket without drainage. Add some dolomite or garden lime to keep your worm farm alkaline for best results. Your worm compost will be ready in about 8 -10 weeks and can be used in your garden or in pot plants.
