25.01.2022 Melbournes Herculaneum. Our pyroclastic flow came from city hall, not a volcano. #samesame

25.01.2022 While doing something serious, we came across the earliest known European depiction of a Bunyip in Australia. The side profile also came with a rather confronting and inexplicable rear profile. Kudos to Laura Campbell for the discovery. The Bunyip was found in an 1841 surveyors field book.

22.01.2022 Tannery Tuesday. Big city, big tannery. @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

19.01.2022 Its the 12th of July and the 329th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne. The anniversary of the battle, won by a Dutch Protestant king against an English Catholic king in Ireland, is celebrated annually by the Orange Order. In 19th century Melbourne tension between Catholics and Protestants was always close to the surface. The clay pipe was a bit like the football jersey of today, in that it told the world which side you barracked for. This pipe celebrates a hero of the Orange Order, William Johnston of Ballykilbeg. It is an extremely rare example of an irish Protestant political pipe in Australia. An interesting design feature is the use of orange leaves to reinforce the political connection. The first two images are digital reconstructions of the artefact. @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

18.01.2022 Happy #sistersday and #friendshipday! Just remember there is always someone that will help you out of the hole! @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

18.01.2022 Terracotta warriors, cesspit oysters, same same but different. Archaeology is blind. #tgif @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

18.01.2022 Melbourne's Herculaneum. Our pyroclastic flow came from city hall, not a volcano. #samesame

18.01.2022 Dog of the Day. Still menacing, this guard dog was buried with much care in the yard of a small business off ABeckett St, Melbourne, sometime in the 1850s. As can be seen in the bullet wounds to the left and right scapulas, this old dog was put down by a shot through the chest with a .36 inch caliber pistol. @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

17.01.2022 Mugshot Monday. Henry Simmonds - Londoner, cigar-maker, tailor and thief. Pictured in 1869, following imprisonment for stealing jewellery. Henry lived in a house we excavated on Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Henry is 21 in this photo. Was it the 19th century or the beard that aged him? @ Melbourne

15.01.2022 Get shucked this weekend and dont be shellfish! As you know, oyster bars were the fun place to be in the 1870s. This guy came from the Lantern of Diogenes Cafe on Bourke Street, Melbourne.

14.01.2022 The solution to the age-old problem of your cuppa tea melting your moustache wax was the Moustache Cup. This example had a metal guard which stopped the wax from getting into the tea when sipping. It was excavated in North Melbourne and dates from the 1870s. @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

10.01.2022 Monday Morning Mapping with Mardi and Maggie!

10.01.2022 Two of four 1840s terrace houses preserved under Edwardian warehouses, 2m below street level on Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne. A shadow economy of theft, prostitution and unlicensed alcohol dominated the Little Lon district. A discrete bottle dump from a sly-grog shop was found in one of the houses. #thirstythursday

01.01.2022 Meanwhile in 1852... The before painting of a basket of fish and curious doggy. #woofwednesday #fishing
