25.01.2022 The Spring wildflower season at Bateman Street Bushland, Wantirna, is drawing to a close due to rapidly drying soil conditions and a few very warm nights! Look forward to seeing Blue Pin Cushions (Brunonia australis) and Button Everlastings (Helichrysum scorpiodes) next season!

23.01.2022 Continue the (cat) curfew? With the election of a new council and the one year trial to conclude in six weeks, it might be time to gauge community sentiment on the success or otherwise of confining cats between sunset and sunrise. Roaming cats get hit by cars, are injured in fights, most likely to kill native wildlife between dusk and dawn and are often an annoyance to neighbours.... This is one curfew I’m keen to retain!

22.01.2022 Pop up signs of support at Lake Knox!

20.01.2022 Still loving the daylight(ing project!) Barely six months since planting along Blind Creek in Ferntree Gully, all plants are doing well! Note the submerged aquatic Water Ribbons, making their presence known in stream.

18.01.2022 Excess packaging annoys me - and invariably contributes to litter in our environment and uses unnecessary valuable timer and fuel in transport. Does it annoy you?

16.01.2022 An introduction to the plants of the Tim Neville Arboretum wetlands in Ferntree Gully!

14.01.2022 First Friends of Dandenong Creek are immediately calling upon Development Victoria as the incumbent owner, to cease ALL on ground work at the Lake Knox site, gi...ven the identification by local citizen scientists of two nesting pairs of the endangered Blue-billed Duck on the fringes of Lake Knox. Additionally we are calling upon DELWP PortPhillip to investigate this matter urgently. 13.01.2022 Exocarpus (Cherry Ballart) in a pot! This is proof that Exocarpus cupressiformis can be grown from cuttings, however the success rate is very poor. From dozens of cuttings taken in August 2018, I present this with a Eucalyptus obliqua, providing some parasitic support. ... Ballarts should be an important component of urban revegetation, and they are culturally significant for the Traditional Custodians of the land and an important source of fruit for many native birds!

11.01.2022 Boronia Road double damage!! Firstly, this newly replanted roadside was partly dug up by a water main renewal company and now sections of the footpath have been replaced, leaving a mess everywhere and forcing pedestrians onto the new plantings and those with mobility aids onto the road. (I actually witnessed this happen around 11am this morning) Some of the dodgy attempted landscape restoration involves a load of pine bark and sandy loam soil, spread across the native Wal...laby Grass lawn. Yvonne Allred - Councillor for Baird Ward Knox City Council

10.01.2022 It’s been a big week here in Knox with a newly elected Local Council of eight women and one man, further relaxation of restrictions and the sun shining bright today!! Chrysocephalum apiculatum (Common Everlasting) at Dobson Reserve Ferntree Gully sums it up for me!!

07.01.2022 Greening Healesville! Spent quite a few days over the last fortnight whipping this brand new extension to the Yarra Valley Holiday Park (Badgers Creek) into shape. Renowned for it’s local wildlife, we planted hundreds of native plants and a few shade trees to benefit local Honeyeaters, Spinebills and Parrots. Open for business Monday?!

07.01.2022 Further to the significant interest in my very limited success (5%) of Exocarpus cuttings, here’s some background of my process. -Firm tip cuttings approximately 8cm in length taken in August 2018, with the cut stem based scraped a little and dipped into Manuka honey and water solution for 1-2 seconds. (Hot water used to create solution, then allowed to cool.) (I generally don’t use commercial rooting hormone for many plants any more as it seems to sometimes have a negative... impact?) -Commercial potting mix was used into a polystyrene foam box to the depth of about 10cm. -Cuttings inserted approximately 3cm into potting mix, watered in well and placed in a polyhouse in a shaded location. -Cuttings stayed in the polyhouse for 8 months, with many dying without forming roots or callouses, some forming only callouses and some forming both callouses and roots approximately 4-5cm long. -Cuttings with roots potted on with various companion plants including Eucalyptus, Leptospermum, Poa and Themeda tubestock. -Some of the potted cuttings died over the following summer, however new growth appeared on a few plants, which continued to prosper in Autumn and Winter of 2020.

03.01.2022 White is the new purple! A selection of a few local native plants which have a variation on the most commonly seen natural purple/blue flower colours.
