25.01.2022 The children in the Junior Kinder room are gaining more and more knowledge about the different countries, cultures and traditions around the world. Over the last few weeks they have visited numerous countries through books, discussions and video imagery to further their knowledge about the wider world. Children are guiding their own learning by asking questions and making suggestions, as they are interested and excited to see what the world has to offer. This enquiry based... learning supports researching, and investigation skills. During these explorations children were were given the opportunity to further understand Maori traditional carvings through the language of clay. Using carving tools children created their own masterpieces.

24.01.2022 You might be surprised to learn that building blocks have been scientifically proven to build important skills. Research has shown that block play supports the development of social skills, abstract thinking, creativity, mathematical thinking, literacy and more!

24.01.2022 Learning about ancient and modern structures in Mandarin classes with Yuli in Kinder and Junior Kinder rooms. This topic extends on the Junior Kinder children learning about Australian buildings over the last few weeks. The children told Yuli about the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Big Pineapple and the Big Banana. So Yuli showed them some famous buildings in China.... In the Junior Kinder, Yuli and the children traveled back to ancient China and learnt about the Great Wall of China. They watched a short video about the history of the Great Wall of China. The children were amazed that the Great Wall of China was 13,000 miles long and it was built 2300 years ago. After the video, Yuli suggested the children build our own Great Wall of China using the large blocks in the outdoor environment. They collaborated to build the blocks over the hill. Cody and Jayden brought a round-shaped tub and told everyone that it was the river. The children tried to build a bridge over the tub. Have a look at the photo below and see how proud the Junior Kinder children were after they built their own Great Wall of China. While the Junior Kinder children studied the Great Wall of China from 2300 years ago, the Kinder children looked at a modern building in China - the Oriental Pearl Tower. The Oriental Pearl Tower is a TV tower in Shanghai and it has 468 m tall and is one of the tallest buildings in China. The Kinder children used some recycled materials to build their own representation of The Oriental Pearl Tower. The results were spectacular.

23.01.2022 Earlier this week, the Nursery children took part in a culinary class with Chef Nimmi. Delicious smoothie bowls for all! Ash, our Centre Director joined in too, she read a wonderful story about Monkey and his delicious super smoothies. It is fair to say that this experience was enjoyed by all!

23.01.2022 The Kinder children have enjoyed learning about how clouds are formed (Science). They had a group time where the children were given the opportunity to add drops of blue dye to the top of the clouds (shaving cream). The children discussed with Tanusri, our ECT, how the water vapour evaporates into the air. The water or ice that makes up the clouds travels into the sky within the air as water vapour, the gas form of water. The water vapour condenses to form a cloud. It's easier for water vapour to condense into water droplets when it has a particle to condense upon. This just goes to show that Science can be fun at ANY age!

22.01.2022 Toddler, pre-kinder, junior-kinder and kinder children engaged in collaborative parachute play today. Collaborative play is a type of play that involves taking turns, sharing, following rules, negotiating, and compromising. Children who engage in collaborative play work together to reach a common goal. Here at Knox we know how important it is for children to learn from their peers. As our littlest learn from our oldest, the developmental opportunities are abundant for all i...nvolved. The younger children step up and challenge themselves to learn new skills and the older children gain confidence as they notice themselves as role models. So much laughter and so many friendships and memories made during this fun filled experience.

Hand-eye coordination and small muscle control improve as children learn to manipulate sand accessories. Sand play also promotes social skills.

19.01.2022 All the colours of the rainbow in the toddler room. Children in the toddler room are learning to identify colour through a variety of different learning opportunities. So why learn about colours?... Having a strong knowledge of the different colours comes in useful in many situations that children will become exposed to. Learning about colours allows children to recognise significant visual hues such as red as a code for danger and the meaning behind traffic lights. Being able to recognise colours assists with educational skills too such as creative story telling. Describing an object without saying its colour is difficult! Learning about colours this week has been so much fun.

12.01.2022 COLOURS, COLOURS EVERYWHERE! . The Nursery and Tiny Tots children are exploring colours as they play, which is supporting them to gain understanding of this abstract concept. Children are given the opportunity to learn about colours in a variety of different contexts.... Learning colours coincides with your childs cognitive development. Their ability to differentiate colours normally begins to take shape at 18 months. Around this time your child will notice the differences and similarities between textures, sizes and shapes as well. Although they notice the differences, it takes them much longer to fully understand the different colours. Thats why here at Knox the learning happens with the careful consideration given to the learning spaces, experiences and the resources that are offered everyday to children.

11.01.2022 The Educators at Green Leaves Knox take the time to involve children in our teaching practice. We will not always have an answer to every question. But with the children, we can find out together.

09.01.2022 This post really makes you stop and reflect on the way in which we react and speak to children around the work they have created. It is important to remember that the process is so very beneficial to children, rather than the end product. Wouldnt you agree?

08.01.2022 Children from the Nursery to the Kinder have been developing their Pre-Literacy skills here at Knox. Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they actually read or write. ... Research shows these early literacy skills are best developed through talking, singing, reading, writing and playing. Beginning at birth, what you do every day helps prepare your child to become a successful reader. Literacy development is a vital part of your childs overall development. Its the foundation for doing well at school, socialising with others, developing independence and provides them with the skills they need for their future success. Opportunities for children to engage in play that encourages pre-literacy skills are given to children every day in every room at Green Leaves.

Dont worry though, Jess got all the children back in Australia safe and sound.

02.01.2022 GREEN LEAVES IS ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC Children of all ages benefit when given the opportunity to make music. When children are able to create and explore ideas using musical instruments, pathways in their brains are developed, particularly in the areas of language development, speech, listening and reading skills.... Playing musical instruments can also assist in developing self-confidence and decision making which keys should I press? Which sounds do I like and not like? How do I make music with this? Theyre all questions your child will learn to answer for themselves as they experiment with musical instruments. By learning to make decisions, they are laying the ground work for positive social interactions as they get older. We love to hear the musical notes drifting through the service as our children learn.

01.01.2022 The Junior Kinder children are discovering patterns. Patterning is a basic math skill upon which many mathematical concepts are based. In kinder identifying and creating patterns is just the beginning of the mastery of life-long mathematical skills.... Patterns are all around us providing opportunities to teach children more about them. The key to teaching this basic math skill is to support children to become aware of patterns and give them opportunities to create and extend patterns in daily life. After just a bit of practice, you will be amazed at how often children find and create patterns.
