24.01.2022 This week in the Preschool room, we will be celebrating NAIDOC Week throughout our group times and craft activities. We have planned a group craft experience, creating the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags using our handprints. Today, we created our own flags using PVA glue and coloured paper, looking at pictures of the flags for references. As part of our learning, we discovered the meaning behind each of the flags which was an interesting part of our discussions d...uring these craft experiences. We learnt that the colours of the Aboriginal flag signify the land, the sun and the people with the red representing the land, yellow as the sun and black for the people. The green colour on the Torres Strait Islander flag represents their land while the blue represents the surrounding sea with the black representing the people. The white symbol above the star represents a Dhari (headdress) which is a symbol of the Torres Strait Islander people and the five-pointed star is a symbol of peace among the 5 major island groups. By providing these group and craft experiences, we hope to promote inclusion and acceptance amongst our Preschoolers as we teach and learn about this culture together.

19.01.2022 Balloon Painting At the tables, they all had a turn at engaging in a painting experience with balloons and different coloured paints. Using their self-help skills, the Quokka’s where encouraged to put on their own paint shirts before sitting down with their piece of paper. Using their fine motor skills they carefully grabbed the end of the balloon and pushed it into the tray to make sure the balloon was covered in paint before stamping the balloon all over the small paper.

13.01.2022 ~ Wombat Room ~ We began our morning with reading the funny story called if you’re cheeky and you know it. The words of the book sang the tune of if you’re happy and you know it but the actions of the song related to the animal for example: if you’re a monkey and you know it, Pull A Face. The children giggled quite a lot as they went through all the different animals and completing the various actions, after which sparked a conversation about the different animals ...in the books and which animals the children liked the most. The favourite was the monkey because he was Cheeky! After our group session, the children were asked what they wanted to for do a craft experience today, the most common response was Make a painting of our favourite animal, so Sarah gathered the essential items and encouraged the children to begin painting their chosen animals. As the children painted contently, Sarah and Nichole questioned the children about the animal they were painting and why they liked that particular animal. Some of the responses were quite humorous as apparently Giraffes have long necks because they want to see over the top of buildings and tigers are only cranky because they’re hungry all the time.
