07.01.2022 Why I stand: TO STOP THE WAR ON LOCAL BUSINESS. Our Shire, led by the priorities of our Councillors have been working against our local businesses for too long.... We need to stop the antagonism, the waste and the destruction - for common sense outcomes that support our community. David Gill, Councillor for the Red Hill Ward has campaigned against many businesses, not just in his ward but across our Peninsula. These stories are well known and extensive. His campaign to shut down the farm gates is just one such example (image attached of his note in the local paper seeking input into 'prosecuting illegal sales'). While state government is engaged in a review of the 50 year old farm gate legislation and intend to update it to include permission to sell local produce from within your region, our Shire continues to progress prosecutions of these businesses who are doing exactly that. Providing outlet for smaller farms unable to sustain farm gates and who are thankful for others to buy and sell their produce. Creating a chain of food networks and farm to customer experiences that are sustainable and that our community love. In Feb of this year, Councillor Gill brought a set of motions (included in an image below) before Council to have all names of businesses accused of breaches of the farm gate provisions to be brought to Council with a plan for how the Shire intended to make them accountable. His actions in this moment and across his campaign against the farm gates have been in support of competitive interests. Farmers & Supermarkets who don't like this 'new' type of business and who use Gill and the Shire to progress their personal interests. Council officers took the unusual step of describing the actions as not in the name of 'fairness or good purpose for the broader community'. They described Gill's motions as attempting to 'NAME AND SHAME' local businesses and unequivocally opposed it. And while there was some debate about whether these names should come to Council or more confidential settings and a slight amendment was made (against Gill's strong opposition and belief that publicly naming these businesses and their accused breaches was in the public interest), the Councillors unanimously voted to pass these motions. So in April of this year, just a handful of weeks into COVID shutting down our world, our beloved Farm Gates began to receive legal letters. Without pause for the updated legislation or caution or care for the suffering of these businesses, our Shire has gone about business as usual. And just to be clear - this story is not unique. This is business as usual. My vested interest in this race is to stop this type of behaviour. To not work for one group or one interest but to approach issues like these with common sense, consideration for how we may reach the best outcome - that aligns the rules with community interests and a badly needed reduction to legal and consultant fees associated with fighting all of our local businesses. These are not Chinese developers. These are the families that have put it all on the line to create a business, to employ locals and to give back to their communities. These are our friends and neighbours and they don't deserve this treatment. I will fight for them. I will fight for every stakeholder to have a seat at the table and to ensure that no special interest group or agenda is more valuable than another. Councillor Gill is claiming to be a friend to business and to intending to prioritise working collaboratively with them through this difficult time. His record tells another story and it's not one that appears capable of this type of partnership and goodwill. Our Shire's Head of Planning, in response to a request by a Councillor to pause prosecuting businesses during COVID, claims to be unable to stop enforcement actions because planning legislation has been unchanged and they are required to enforce all accused breaches and progress all legal action. Any reasonable person knows this isn't true. The Shire decides how to enforce matters and with what approach and their decisions to destroy businesses during this time are reprehensible. Your Councillor votes matter in this election. They have the ability to shift this culture and support our local community in a different way. Talk to your friends. This matters. #bethechange Listen to the discussion of the Planning discussion meeting in Feb - at 1:40 - Link in comments.
