18.01.2022 Protecting Ghana’s sea turtles Check out this great news article re Ghana’s sea turtle defenders. 18.01.2022 Environmental groups band together to ask the UN for help to stop this destructive bill - that was rushed through the lower house and refused debate. This Bill is supposedly about economic growth, but environmental destruction is short-term thinking and not sustainable for communities and life. #BuildBackBetter #greenpeace https://www.theguardian.com//unesco-urged-to-oppose-alarmi

14.01.2022 Did you know the damage caused to marine life by balloons? What goes up must come down. Balloons are hazards when they enter the environment. Balloons return to the land and sea where they can be mistaken for food and eaten by animals. Sea turtles, dolphins, whales, fish and birds have been reported with balloons in their stomachs and ribbons and strings can lead to entanglement, causing death. Check out this short doco trailer about the Rubber Jellyfish, aka the balloon, and... the detrimental effects on marine life. It sure opens your eyes. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ptzxsplC2Nk * Balloons break up in the air, fall back down into the water with strands that make fish and turtles think what they see in the water is jellyfish, hence the term Rubber Jellyfish refer attached photo * Turtles have a one-way digestive track. They can’t spew the plastic out, so can’t dive down to get natural food sources, and often starve to death because they’re not getting nutrients #BalloonsKillMarineLife

13.01.2022 Time is running out for our NSW koalas! Environment Minister Matt Kean, Planning Minister Rob Stokes and the Agriculture Minister Adam Marshall are drafting the regulations that will become the only protections koalas will have on private land. These changes to the regulatory codes have become a huge moment for koalas, with these changes set to impact 80% of the entire state! It will either push them to the brink or support their recovery. While the Nature Conservation Counc...il expected the codes last week, they have been delayed so we have more time to pressure these ministers to make them strong. We must not let koala protections go backwards while they stare down extinction. To keep up the pressure, the Nature Conservation Council is keeping their petition open for a few weeks longer. Can you please sign and share this far and wide? Thank you so much! https://www.nature.org.au/ge/take-action/koalas-need-trees/

09.01.2022 It’s World Farm Animals Day today. Farm animals are cute, and they also play an important role in modern society. Take some time to appreciate them this World Farm Animals Day. Created in memory of Ghandi, who believed in treating all living beings with respect, World Farm Animals Day was founded to highlight the poor conditions suffered by some farm animals, and promote awareness in the hope something may be done to improve their lives. While World Farm Animals Day has an im...portant, and sad, origin, in the sense it was created to raise awareness of suffering, it can be celebrated in different ways with children. Taking children for a visit to a farm is a great way to teach them about farm animals, and it’s a good chance to instil in them the message of treating animals with respect. Another great way to celebrate is by donating to an animal protection charity of your choice, or consider plant based alternatives to meat and dairy. You’d be helping the animals, it’s healthier for you, and much better for the environment! See more
09.01.2022 For those of you who haven’t seen the latest Greenpeace documentary Dirty Power, click on the link below. It’s a great, honest documentary that tells it like it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FjmlNo-Ai8 If after you watch the video you feel like you need a call to action, why not contact the NSW Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean and thank him for wanting to invest in renewables refer this article in the link... https://www.theguardian.com//nsw-government-says-renewable And thank him for his plan to double the koala population by 2050. To have an Environment Minister who actually is thinking about the environment is great! So let him know we appreciate what he’s doing. https://www.smh.com.au//matt-kean-aims-to-double-koala-pop To contact Matt Kean, click on the below link https://mattkean.com.au/contact-matt-kean-mp Still wanting to do more? Why not contact the Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley advising her Government finally takes action on climate change, stop investment in coal and gas, and instead invest in renewables, and preserving our natural habitat to stop our woeful animal extinction rate. To contact Sussan Ley, click on the below link https://minister.awe.gov.au/ley/contact/contact-form If you’re interested in joining the local Greenpeace Central Coast group, please message us and we can advise next steps. In the meantime check out the Greenpeace REenergise website that rates companies on their commitment to 100% renewables. https://www.reenergise.org You can take action by calling on some of Australia’s biggest energy using companies like Woolies, Telstra and Coles to switch to 100% renewable energy so we can make a giant step forward to safe-guarding our climate, regardless of who our leaders are. 08.01.2022 Today is National Threatened Species Day 2020 7th September 2020 Australia is home to more than 500,000 animal and plant species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Over the last 200 years, more than 100 animal and plant species have become extinct. In NSW alone there are close to 1000 animal and plant species at risk of extinction.... Threatened Species Day is when we turn the spotlight on native plants, animals, and ecosystems that are under threat and reflect on how we can protect them into the future. The day also celebrates the amazing work that is being done to save them by passionate conservationists, researchers, volunteers, and community experts. Like many Australian species, quolls are facing an uncertain future as ongoing land clearing, persecution and disasters such as bushfires push them closer and closer to extinction. Human Society International Australia is continuing to fight the causes of these many threats wherever they can. It’s one of more than 100 projects to protect threatened species and help injured animals impacted by last season’s bushfires that they’ve funded since the start of the year, none of wich would have been possible without the generosity of supporters. I donate monthly to HSI, and have included the link in this message if you would also like to become a donor and help support the wonderful work HSI do. 06.01.2022 KOALAS SOLD OUT FOR COAL Sadly, Australian environmental laws have failed time and time again in protecting our incredible wildlife. And it's going from bad... to worse. A new agreement will allow the coal industry to BULLDOZE endangered habitat before a replacement home for the displaced Koalas is found. There won’t even be any legal consequences for making the koala homeless in the meantime. Without opening your wallet, you can raise 50c for Greenpeace Australia Pacific by taking our 2 minute survey. When you act to protect our iconic koala, you help stop their steady slide to extinction. Stopping the coal industry from recklessly endangering our precious Australian wildlife without consequence takes 2 minutes of your time today. We can’t lose our beloved national icon to coal. Stand up for koalas today and help Greenpeace push for a new generation of environmental laws with this 2 minute survey.

05.01.2022 Magenta Coastcare are calling for more local volunteers: Meeting Place: Council car park at the end of Magenta Drive, Magenta NSW Time: Every Tuesday at 8.00 am. Contact: Dave Guia: [email protected] ... Magenta Coastcare Group is a volunteer working group dedicated to improving the state of the dunes (fore and hind) from Tuggerah Beach (aka Magenta Beach) to the access road at the East end of Magenta Drive. They are working progressively along the pathway leading to the beach and the bushland path (north) to Wyrrabalong National Park. Much of the work involves removal of weeds (primarily Bitou Bush) which has not been controlled since work was undertaken many years ago. They have devoted hundreds of hours working on regeneration of 33ha of beach and bushland. In addition they have used funding to expand their activities in a nursery where they propagate native plants that ultimately are used in the bush to vegetate areas that had been overtaken by Bitou bush (which they eradicated). They are continuing to make good progress all along the dunes! The plant (Boobiala) is just one example of many that have started to thrive in this section of the dunes - previously almost entirely covered in Bitou (see the dead branches on the left from spraying). Also plenty of Scaevola are now spreading in parts of these dunes!

02.01.2022 Calling all Central Coasties to join the Greenpeace Re-Energise online campaign, and LIKE our Central Coast Local Action Group Greenpeace page to find out more about what we are doing nationally and locally to help protect our environment. Greenpeace has made it easy for you to see which big companies are ranked best to worst when it comes to green energy and for you to take action to encourage them to switch to renewables. https://reenergise.org/about/... Use the ‘Take Action’ section of the Greenpeace ReEnergise Company Ranker page to post on a company’s Facebook or Twitter page, sign a petition or send a letter to a CEO. Look for the green symbols (good) and red coal plant symbols (bad) to work out who's falling behind. Our local group spent a lovely day back in March at West Gosford Bunnings, encouraging them to switch to renewables - with current talks with Bunnings looking promising thanks to the action of groups like ours nation-wide! Large companies account for 70% of emissions from electricity in Australia. That’s a lot of carbon pollution. But these companies can switch to 100% renewable electricity! And if they do, they will help clean up our electricity system, create new jobs and cut huge amounts of carbon pollution along the way. The business benefits of switching to renewable energy are huge cheaper power, cleaner air and water, happier staff and happier customers. Aldi, Commonwealth Bank, Lion and Telstra have already committed - who's next?

01.01.2022 Great news everyone! The NSW Renewable Energy bill has passed in the NSW Parliament! This is a huge win. This law will see 60 new solar and wind farms built in NSW by 2030, more than quadrupling clean energy in our state. This means we’ll go from sourcing 20% of our energy from wind and solar today to 70% in 2030. NSW is set to become a clean energy powerhouse! Watch the video below and share this great news with all your friends and family!... https://fb.watch/200L6eE8p0/
