I emailed you with breaking news that the koala-killing Local Land Services Bill could be voted on in the Upper House that day and asked you to phone key MPs urging them to block the bill. Well, guess what? As the day wore on it became clear that a growing number of government MPs had serious concerns about the bill.... Make no mistake. Without your actions over the last few weeks, this bill would have sailed through the parliament and made it easier for koala habitat to be cleared across the state. Thanks to you and thousands like you sounding the alarm, there is now a massive pushback within the government over the Nats disgraceful attempts to introduce laws that will push koalas even closer towards extinction. 05.01.2022 HELP SAVE BLINKY BILL! Contact Catherine Cusack... Debate in the Upper House of NSW Parliament on the Local Land Services Amendment Bill (2020) has been deferred (it has already passed the Legislative Assembly). The Bill will: - Freeze protections for core koala habitat to five Councils which have completed their Koala Plans of Management, meaning many Councils that want to protect core koala habitat in their LGA won’t be able to -Remove the ability for Councils and Environm...ental Planning Instruments to prohibit, require development consent for or otherwise restrict forestry operations on private land. The bill also doubles the duration of Private Native Forestry (PNF) plans from 15 years to 30 years and ignores the fact a two-year Review into PNF is still underway -Lift restrictions on land zoned ‘environmental protection’ meaning more koala habitat on private land will be cleared, with no environmental oversight -And much more! This new Koala SEPP was supposed to increase protections for koalas. Instead, the Liberals have thrown Blinky Bill and all of his mates under the bulldozers with this bill which is a massive step backwards for koala protection in NSW. Under the 1994 Koala SEPP, Councils were slowly developing their Koala Plans of Management and then protecting mapped core koala habitat. Now the new Koala SEPP will provide no protection to newly mapped core koala habitat. The Bill might be back on Thursday (tomorrow), amendments are likely and an inquiry possible too.
