20.01.2022 Nicola Barton I thought you’d be interested in the great work CWHC does in Parramatta!
19.01.2022 Today I attended the official Opening of the Parramatta River Escarpment Boardwalk and Cycleways (Opposite Parramatta Ferry Wharf). Great to see Aboriginal Elder Aunty Julie Bukari Webb do an excellent Welcome to Darug Country, Uncle Chris Tobin, Aunty Peta Strachan & the Jannawi Dancers, Lord Mayor Dwyer, Clrs Pandey, Prociv, Wilson & Zaiter, Parra Parents’ Kellie Darley, local cyclist rep Charlene Bordley and master design architect Philip Thalis too. Congratulations to all involved as we now have an off street active transport route all the way to Meadowbank & Sydney Olympic Park!
17.01.2022 Also at The Cumberland Womens Health Centre AGM today we were treated to Darug Auntie Jacinta Tobin singing two songs. This one is called Wirawi Bulbwul - Aboriginal Women Strong!
16.01.2022 Where else have developers been underpaying government bodies $millions by rorts like described here?
14.01.2022 Please make a quick submission objecting to this appalling toxic Incinerator which will pollute the whole Sydney Basin and sometimes further afield!
13.01.2022 Here are some of the important decisions from the Monday 9 November City of Parramatta Council meeting: 1. The politically conservative Councillors succee...ded with their Rescission Motion to disallow a good Motion previously carried for Council staff to report on a variety of measures to achieve a better increase In tree canopy cover across the Local Government Area. 2. The heritage supportive Councillors succeeded in having community consultation improved significantly for the North East Parramatta CBD planning investigation area. This now includes my amendment to have reference made in the associated documents to the GML Heritage independent review, which is the least supportive review of high rise buildings up to 30 storeys overshadowing heritage items and the Sorrell Street heritage conservation area there at North Parramatta. 3. The Liberal Councillors successfully moved a proposal praising the Berejiklian government for its so-called Powerhouse Parramatta Museum with Council conditionally supporting the relocation of Willow Grove, rather than its demolition, but this would mean structural damage to the building tantamount to demolition and relocation completely away from its garden and out of its historical site context . The Council had previously strongly opposed this, so Clrs Prociv, Pandey and I have signed a rescission motion to block the Liberal’s motion. 4. I was the only Councillor to speak against a 192m high 61 storey tower at 12 Hassall Street Parramatta, inter alia complaining that for the additional community infrastructure needed for the resultant 800 or so residents, Council would only get about $3m as a public share of the land owner’s unearned property value increase of about $20m. In the ACT the public value share would have been $15m not $3m. Four other Councillors also opposed the development which will overbear nearby World Heritage Listed Lancer Barracks. 5. Council approved for public exhibition, the North Parramatta Belmore Park/Ritchie Benaud Oval Masterplan, which includes a 1st grade standard cricket oval, space for a community garden promoted by me, Simon Alexander and others, and protection of some heritage items and bush remnants, but there is room for improvement! 12.01.2022 If you oppose 30 storey towers in North Parramatta next to 1-2 storey Local & State Heritage buildings and Sorrell St Heritage Conservation Area, please make a submission ASAP!
11.01.2022 REALLY IMPORTANT TO CITE IN OBJECTING SUBMISSIONS Appendix 4 the DPE Heritage studies prepared by GML for the Department of Planning as an independent peer review, because it makes some very strong recommendations such as: there should be no additional overshadowing of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and school, all Saints Church or the North Parramatta or Sorrell Street heritage conservation areas at any time! It also says to Remove all floor space ratio (FSR) incentives from the North Parramatta interface area! PLEASE SHARE THIS!
10.01.2022 The draft Westmead Place Strategy sounds harmless, BUT Be not fooled.....What it really is, this Place Strategy, is a cloak for stuffing as much development as possible into the fragile, treasured Cumberland Hospital precinct, part of which is proposed for world heritage listing. - Elizabeth Farrelly.
10.01.2022 An important read! Even zero net emissions by 2040 is too dangerously risky!
06.01.2022 The new newspaper Parra News reports on my 2018 motion which is getting a new lease of life with a recent Council anti-single use plastics report being deferred by Liberals and other politically conservative Councillors. READ ALL ABOUT IT!
05.01.2022 Parra News! See page 12 Call to cool our schools - Research reveals surface temperatures can soar to 70 degrees!!
05.01.2022 SMH: Premier Gladys Berejiklian moved the Greater Sydney Commission under her control against the advice of a key departmental boss two months after the secret lobbying push by a group including big business and developers. A group of prominent Sydney identities wrote a confidential letter to the Premier in March 2018 urging her to seize ministerial control of the commission which then fell under the Department of Planning. Among the signatories were the Sydney Business Chamber directors and the president of the peak body for developers. It was delivered just weeks after the Department of Planning secretary Carolyn McNally vehemently opposed the move. https://www.smh.com.au//premier-s-planning-shake-up-came-a
03.01.2022 Construction has started at long last, but If the State government had done the right thing, as recommended unanimously by the Upper House inquiry, they should have paid for and built the new Aquatic Centre BEFORE demolishing the Parramatta War Memorial pool paid for by the community. https://youtu.be/anYhKb1WZRw
