25.01.2022 Interview with Senator Nick McKim, Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens in the Senate.

25.01.2022 This story about divestment is from the US. The same applies here in Australia. We have a choice of banks and superannuation policies. We can all choose whether our money finances fossil fuels, or not. The Australian Greens believe that financial institutions should be incentivised to play a key role in steering funds into more productive and sustainable long-term uses.... #divestment #climatechange See more

25.01.2022 Come to the Bellingen Community Markets tomorrow and sign this petition.

24.01.2022 Just wrote a huge post about tomorrow's agenda for the Ordinary Council Meeting and Facebook ate it! Please excuse the brevity: We are on tomorrow at 9am, strea...med live (and a recording and minutes up later) plus full business papers available at: https://bellingen.civicclerk.com.au/Web/Player.aspx A long agenda and might I recommend reading some of the quarterly reports and half yearly reports in order to get an idea of the range and complexity of issues each of our Council units deals with, for example, the Sustainable Environment and Waste Unit and the Community Wellbeing Unit (just in case you are still harbouring the misconception hat local government should only be dealing with 'roads, rates and rubbish'). We welcome your input and questions.

24.01.2022 Remember back on Feb 5 that we reported how Melinda Pavey and Pat Conaghan MP were spruiking the $11 million the Bushfire Local Economy Recovery fund was spending on the Macleay Valley Skydiving Adventure Park at Kempsey Regional Airport? Well, it seems the Kempsey Shire Council asked for $7.5 million but the Nats and Libs for some reason increased the grant. The pork barreling of the current state government knows no bounds. The Australian Greens believe that the public sector does not exist to shift money to private enterprise or to enrich private interests.

23.01.2022 Question time with Greens Leader Adam Bandt Authorised by Andrew Blake for The Greens NSW, 1/275 Broadway GLEBE NSW 2037

23.01.2022 '...gas is a heavy source of emissions and its future role must be limited under goals to keep global warming below 2 degrees in line with the Paris climate agreement.'

23.01.2022 2020 was a challenging year, but there were some bright spots - particularly when it came to clean energy. The Clean Energy Council just released its 2020 Snapshot and we've pulled a few stats for you!

23.01.2022 The Australian Greens want First Nations peoples to have self-determination over their own destiny, to prosper and achieve the aspirations they have for their lives and for their children and grandchildren and for First Nations peoples to have all they need to live their lives in health, well-being and peace on their lands. We respect First Nations knowing, being and doing and will embed this principle in all aspects of national policy.

23.01.2022 What do you need to prepare, recover and be resilient?

22.01.2022 This proposal was backed by federal and state governments, but the public response has been overwhelmingly against it due to environmental concerns. Instead of embracing renewable energy and tackling climate change, both the Liberal and Labor parties have propped up the coal, gas and oil industries while accepting millions of dollars in political donations. The fossil fuel lobby continues to do everything it can to undermine action on climate change and block the transition to renewable technology.

22.01.2022 Good news! A Greens motion which urges the NSW Government to tighten animal welfare laws and close loopholes that allow puppy farms to operate has recently pass...ed the Local Government NSW Conference This is an extraordinary step, and now the ball is in the NSW Government's court to do right by our furry friends

22.01.2022 It is time for the Ordinary Meeting of Council tomorrow (Wednesday 25th) for November from 9am - in Chambers, with live streaming online and a recording and min...utes going up later. No time for hints about the agenda this month so I encourage you to have a scan through and look at whatever interests you. There is always lots going on in Council and the range of issues that councils are required to tackle may just surprise you (I will give you a hint - rates, roads and rubbish as core business ended over 40 years ago now and it's a complex world). Full business papers (and live stream, recording and minutes) can be found at https://www.bellingen.nsw.gov.au/council/agenda-and-minutes

22.01.2022 The Morrison government has said it refused to sign a global pledge committing them to reverse biodiversity loss because it was inconsistent with Australia’s policies.

22.01.2022 This story from Canada shows that the highly polarised conversations that often surround logging might not be necessary, that another path might be found. The Australian Greens want to complete the transition from native forest logging to plantations, including retraining and other assistance for workers, and the development of sustainable alternative fibre industries.

21.01.2022 Many times, women have been leaders, we have been voices, but we have not actually been listened to, she said. This recognition gives me a lot of encouragement. It gives me a lot of strength on behalf of all the women who are fighting on this planet. We want to unite. Nenquimo is the only female Indigenous leader on Time magazine's 100 most influential people in 2020, and the second Ecuadoran ever to be named on the list. First Nations People have a unique relationship with the land and water, and their rights and obligations as custodians must be respected.

21.01.2022 Proximity to green spaces such as parks and biking trails helps to promote physical and mental health, and should be shared equally amongst urban communities. The Australian Greens want spatial planning that harmonises local development and infrastructure solutions that support social equity, walkability, transport, food production, tree cover, biodiversity and habitats, in responding to energy, land and water supply pressures as part of a climate change adaptation strategy. #climatechange #socialequity #biodiversity

21.01.2022 The federal Australian Labor Party opposition will seek to block many of the Morrison government’s proposed changes to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation that would see the green bank opened up to investments in fossil fuel projects, and would grant federal energy minister Angus Taylor new powers to direct its investments. The Australian Greens want no new coal-fired power stations, gas mines or oil wells, and no expansions to any existing coal- or gas-fired power stations or mines, plus the development of programs to assist fossil fuel-dependent communities to make the transition to other more sustainable sources of economic prosperity.

19.01.2022 An Australian built electric ute is just around the corner! The Australian Greens want development of electric and non-fossil fuel mobility infrastructure and growth in electric and non-fossil fuel vehicle uptake.

19.01.2022 An opinion piece from Global Comment. The Australian Greens believe that Australia's cultural plurality is a part of the nation's identity and should be recognised as such.

19.01.2022 #Day29 #30DaysOfAction We know that the gender pay gaps is stuck, and the pandemic has placed further pressure on the the gendered nature of caring for children..., aged parents and family members with disabilities in Australia. This has created environment where women continue to experience explicit and implicit financial disadvantage throughout their lives. We also know that some groups in Australian society are more vulnerable to poverty and disadvantage than others. This includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people living with a mental illness, single parents and newly arrived migrants (particularly those without English). We know that there are structural and societal inequalities that needed to be addressed. Yesterday. 200+ years ago. But to help you now, with what you might be able to control, here are some online guides and tools to support navigating the financial sphere.

17.01.2022 Tamara Smith, MP is working with Animal Liberation and the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds to oppose a new greyhound racing track being built in the Tweed. The greyhound industry cannot be reformed. It will never recover from the public exposures that demonstrated clearly the systemic and inherent cruelty entrenched in the industry. The Australian Greens want the abolition of the cruel or inhumane use of animals for sport, recreation or entertainment.

17.01.2022 This is from Kate Washington MP - the scorecard of the response of the NSW government to the #Koala inquiry chaired by Cate Faehrmann. A very, very poor response Gladys Berejiklian. This is on your watch.

16.01.2022 Two chemicals that are commonly found in processed foods may harm the immune system, according to a new study. The Australian Greens want a comprehensive food labelling system that is strongly enforced, mandates full contents and nutritional disclosure, and allows only scientifically-verified health and nutritional claims.

15.01.2022 Oh, and by-the-way there is a by-election on May 22. Part of a broader NSW government road's strategy, or pork barrelling? Let me think...

15.01.2022 This story is about New York, but could be about Sydney, or Melbourne...or Coffs Harbour. The Australian Greens want urban areas designed to reduce dependence on transport and the need for lengthy commutes, with more community precincts meeting the needs of residents, by providing work, education, shopping, community and social activities and active transport (walking, cycling) opportunities.

15.01.2022 There's just one week to take action for a critical decision on koala protection! On Tuesday 6 October, NSW Government Ministers will meet to decide crucial guidelines underpinning the new planning policy to protect koala habitat (Koala SEPP). Rest assured, the Nats will come at it with everything they’ve got to weaken what little protections for koala habitat there is. But what the NSW Koala Inquiry made clear was that koala habitat can’t continue to be cleared if we are to ...have any hope of saving our precious koala from extinction. The Premier and her Planning and Environment Ministers need to hear from everyone who cares about koalas today: Strengthen, not weaken, protections for koalas! Add your name and please spread the word! https://www.catefaehrmann.org/4_things_koala_laws

15.01.2022 'You have got to have social justice to have climate justice': Annamie Paul, leader of the Green Party of Canada.

14.01.2022 Good. Community pressure has worked. Gas is as dirty as coal & the Crib Point Terminal threatened the climate & delicate environment near Western Port. The future's in green hydrogen, made with sun & wind, and the gas-fuelled Crib Point has no place in it.

14.01.2022 Congratulations Bellingen Shire Council! And welldone to our 3 Greens Councillors and all the work you’ve done over the past 4 years.

14.01.2022 Bellingen District Greens are at the Bellingen Show! Call in and say g’day.

13.01.2022 A plan to tackle unemployment and climate change is staring the government in the face. The Australian Greens say: The climate challenge is also an opportunity to transform Australia into a carbon-neutral powerhouse that creates new jobs and a cleaner planet.

12.01.2022 Research on 18 advanced economies [including Australia] shows that major tax cuts for the rich over the past 50 years have pushed up inequality but have had no significant effects on economic growth or unemployment. The Australian Greens believe that the taxation and transfer system as a whole should be progressive, not regressive; and that growing inequality of wealth is of concern and should be addressed though the tax system.

11.01.2022 From David Shoebridge

11.01.2022 Bowraville is the place to go!

11.01.2022 The New Zealand Greens are hoping to win ten seats or more, which should be enough to leave them as Labour’s only viable coalition partner at the election on Saturday, 17 October. Urge your New Zealander friends to vote. There are details in the post on how to do exactly that. #nzpol

08.01.2022 You paid more tax than these gas giants.

06.01.2022 If the world wasn’t listening to Annalena Baerbock before, they should be now: For the first time ever, the Greens have a chance at picking Germany’s next chancellor and will almost certainly be part of any government formed after September’s election.

05.01.2022 Conservative parties, the Economist noted last year, are now on fire and dangerous. As we plan for next year's local government election, and State and Federal elections beyond, this essay grapples with conservative instincts that are solidly tied to custom, convention, and continuity. And the Greens seek change, so we challenge the conservative mindset. The Greens have a plan for a united, respectful and decent society that welcomes and celebrates difference, and recognises that we are one common humanity.

04.01.2022 It was a beautiful day at the Bellingen Market on Saturday. Come on down to the next market and visit the Bellingen Greens at our posh new marquee.

04.01.2022 Credible climate policies will have to raise the price of carbon, and the public are concerned about these costs even when they believe the science of climate change and generally want governments to address the issue. The Australian Greens believe that the climate crisis necessitates a transition away from an economy reliant on unsustainable consumption and production to one that has net greenhouse gas emission. Any cost of creating an economy that adapts to climate change and supports a safer climate must be distributed fairly, both domestically and internationally.

03.01.2022 It is a beautiful and surprisingly dry morning here in beautiful Bellingen. Come on down to the community markets and say hi to the Greens.

02.01.2022 From Cr Jennie Fenton: We need more diversity in government of all levels. Please do give me a call if you are thinking of running for Council in 2021 and have any questions, want to know how to get started, find out more etc.

02.01.2022 The generation of clean energy already creates more jobs than the generation of electricity by coal or gas does in Australia. The Australian Greens: The climate crisis requires us to seize the opportunity to transform Australia into a greenhouse gas-negative powerhouse that creates new jobs and a cleaner planet.

01.01.2022 And this is but one thing that local government in NSW is up against.

01.01.2022 Political leaders participating in the United Nations Summit on Biodiversity in September 2020, representing 75 countries from all regions and the European Union, have committed to reversing biodiversity loss by 2030. New Zealand, the UK, Germany, Canada...all have committed. Australia? Absent. Silent. That is nothing more than a complete abrogation of responsibility. ... The Australian Greens believe that to maintain Earth's life support systems, it is essential to protect ecosystems, ecosystem processes and biodiversity. The loss of biodiversity is an existential threat and is an unacceptable risk to human and ecosystem health. https://www.leaderspledgefornature.org/

01.01.2022 Everyone deserves a safe place to live. "If you're interested in housing, concerned about the local housing crisis or just like watching local films - come along to the launch of Home Matters on Tuesday 15th Dec @ Mem Hall"
