25.01.2022 Reboot should open with a bang. It did last year with Helen Razer. No reason why this year will be any different. The opening speaker, Jeff Sparrow, is one of Australia’s bravest and most original thinkers. In his opening talk to Reboot 2019 (the Greens NSW annual ideas and issues conference) he will talk about the political effects of the climate emergency and whether democracy or authoritarianism will be strengthened as the crisis unfolds. This is the subject of the prolif...ic author’s next book. If his latest book Trigger Warnings: Political correctness and the rise of the Right - is anything to go by, we can expect a challenging talk. Trigger Warnings is essentially about how the Left lost its way, drifting away from outsider, community organising to insider bureaucratic lobbying. This was accompanied by a growing moral smugness. This drift was arguably - the reason why some parts of it took fright at the same sex marriage plebiscite. The overall result is that the Left has largely abandoned mass political organising in the ‘politically suspect’ suburbs, leaving the field open to the Right. The book is a plea to the Left to rediscover its roots in open, active social movements. In the wake of the Morrison-led coalition’s election win and its strength in Sydney’s western suburbs, for instance - it is necessary reading. Jeff is also a columnist for the Australian Guardian site. See more

24.01.2022 Not to be missed - in this time of radical democratic renewal in so many places and spheres - from the Yellow Vests in France to the extraordinarily heroic people of Hong Kong, via Algeria, Sudan. Rojava, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Kashmir, Palestine, Latin America - and not forgetting the United States. As this conference call emphasises, the renewal of a genuine democracy is essential if we are to solve the ecological crisis that now confronts us ...

22.01.2022 Valuable as Paddy Manning's history of the Greens in Australia is, it needs some supplementing and rebalancing. This site aims to do this. The Greens are nothing if not a collaboration and this site emphasises the value of that diversity - and the part played by the Greens NSW and its attachment to participatory democracy.

18.01.2022 NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes attacks the Byrne/Macri Tree Management DCP.

14.01.2022 Labor continues to go backwards on the Inner City Council. The bad old days are back. They are reverting to type. After paving the way for amalgamation, they chose to go into alliance with the Libs, then throttled local public participation, refused to endorse the climate strike on September 20 and now have decided some suburban land clearing and deforestation is a good thing [again in alliance with the Libs] despite the results of the public consultation.... All this on top of the ICAC revelation that - even after Obeid -they have still been taking illegal developer donations. Won't they ever learn? https://www.facebook.com//a.14919282847/2588648401199114/
