If there is going to be any sustainable progress on combatting discrimination, we need to find ways to include men and boys into these conversations. Campaigns such as UN Womens #HeforShe movement, or White Ribbon campaign recognise this. This recognition does mean that we need to make sure to include the voices of men (and all other categories across the gender continuum) who also feel the impact of gender constraints. The same societ...al forces that perpetuate violence against women also lead to harmful and aggressive masculinities; we must recognise that what holds women back from reaching their full social, economic, and political potential can also have negative impacts on men as well. Creating spaces where men can talk about the challenges they face, as well as topics such as consent, positive masculinity, and how to be allies to women, could be a helpful tool to realise the goal of a more equal and peaceful society. 14.01.2022 Surgical termination after 12 weeks The most significant difference in a termination over 12 weeks, is the need to prepare the cervix for dilation via the administration of a medication. This medication is called Misoprostol and is usually administered by placing it in between the cheeks and the gums and allowing it to slowly dissolve. Depending on the gestational age of the pregnancy and individual circumstances, the wait time can vary between 1-3 hours before the patient pr...oceeds to the operating theatre. During this time, the patient is monitored by nursing staff and given pain relief and anti-nausea medication, if it is required. Once in the operating theatre, the anaesthetist administers a general anaesthetic to the patient before the procedure begins. D&E (Dilation and Evacuation) refers to the dilation of the cervix and surgical evacuation of the contents of the uterus, and the procedure usually takes between 5 and 20 minutes. See more

05.01.2022 Surgical termination / Vacuum curettage A surgical termination procedure involves removing the contents of the uterus, using gentle suction after the cervix has been dilated, and takes less than ten minutes. After the anaesthetic is administered the medical practitioner widens the cervix a few millimetres using dilator rods. A small, soft tipped instrument called a cannula is then inserted through the cervix to the uterus and gently suctions away the contents. A curette (spoo...n shaped instrument) is then used to check that the uterus is empty. The instruments are then withdrawn, and the woman proceeds to the recovery room. Complications are rare but may include perforation of the uterus, tearing of the cervix and heavy blood loss. However, any complications are minimised by attending a clinic with well-trained doctors and nurses.
