05.01.2022 GREENSLOPES EMPLOYEE PRAISED FOR OFF-DUTY HEROICS A nursing student who works at Greenslopes Private Hospital is being praised for her compassion and quick thinking after jumping into action to help an elderly man who’d collapsed on a Brisbane footpath. 20-year-old Taylor Kett was driving home from a placement shift at Greenslopes Private Hospital in early September when she witnessed the drama unfold.... I saw this person on the ground and he was face down and there were two other people standing over him. I thought it would be a good idea to turn around and help, Miss Kett said. I tried to find his pulse but he wasn’t breathing. One lady was telling me not to touch him but I was thinking the airway is more important than the spine, I knew what I needed to do. Taylor performed CPR for approximately five minutes before the ambulance arrived, and asked bystanders to collect towels as the patient had suffered a lot of blood loss. She then continued CPR for another 20 minutes with three other people. It was such a different environment. I’ve done all this training but I’ve usually got all the senior nurses and doctors telling me what to do. This was different because I was the one in charge. But I had the confidence to know what to do, Miss Kett said. An Advanced Care Paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service praised Taylor for her outstanding conduct and said the case highlights the importance of CPR training. When we arrived Miss Kett was performing CPR on a gentlemen who had collapsed by the side of the road. There were multiple other bystanders on scene who Taylor kept calm, informed and gave direction to, the paramedic said. Taylor has clearly been taught well. She was cool, calm and collected throughout the incident. Unfortunately the patient passed away at the scene, however the paramedic said it serves as a reminder about the importance of initiating bystander CPR. Miss Kett completed an enrolled nursing course at TAFE and is currently in her second year of a nursing degree. She said she was grateful to learn from the amazing team of nurses and doctors at Greenslopes Private Hospital as part of her studies. They’re incredible and amazing. The whole team has been so supportive, it’s just such a nice group of people to work with. Miss Kett said the incident had reinforced her passion for nursing and she was hoping to move into paediatrics or midwifery when she graduates in late 2021.

04.01.2022 GET CLICKING TO HELP GREENSLOPES RADIOGRAPHER A Greenslopes radiographer whose research has helped protect theatre nurses from radiation exposure has been named as a finalist in an international graduate research competition. Kelly Wilson-Stewart has made it through to the final, international stage of the Visualise Your Thesis competition - where graduate research students have just one minute to communicate their post graduate research to a general audience.... While three judges will determine the winner among the 21 finalists, this year a ‘people’s choice’ category has been included - where the researcher with the most likes and shares on social media will be awarded first prize. Mrs Wilson-Stewart said it was a fun way for nurses, doctors and health professionals to become involved in important research across the globe. It’s all about education, so if people share the link to my entry it will get out to more nurses and that’s the whole point of my research, not to scare them but to inform them that they’re at risk, Mrs Wilson-Stewart said. Radiation is invisible and if you don’t know there’s a problem, you don’t know how to address it. I want to get the word out to all the forgotten nurses who get exposed because they’re in the theatre all day, every day. Mrs Wilson-Stewart has been a radiographer at Greenslopes Private Hospital for more than 17 years. As a direct result of her research, Greenslopes has increased its PPE to better protect theatre nurses with enough lead goggles and caps to go around. Staff are also more aware of the need to position themselves and protective shields appropriately. I would definitely give a shout out to the management team at Greenslopes because that PPE is expensive but they know the importance of keeping our team safe, she said. I’m also so grateful to the staff at Greenslopes because they’ve been supporting my research for four years now and I couldn’t have done it without them. To help Kelly Wilson-Stewart secure the people’s choice award, click the link below. The competition closes at 8am on Monday 19 October. https://sites.research.unimelb.edu.au/visualise-your-t/2020 For more information on Kelly’s research and related articles, head to her website at https://itsallinyourhead.co/
