The autonomic nervous system is our personal surveillance system, always on guard, asking the question Is this safe? Its goal is to protect us by sensing safety and risk, listening moment by moment to what is happening in and around our bodies and in the connections we have to others. Deb A Dana The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy The vagus nerve is the longest of the cranial nerves. It is called vagus as it is a vagrant or wandering nerve that starts in the brain and goes down to the abdomen. It’s the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system which is the ‘rest and digest’ part of your nervous system (as opposed to ‘fight or flight’) When we are firmly grounded in our parasympathetic nervous system, we feel relaxed, safe and calm. Our heart rate is regulated and our breathing is full. We feel able to connect to our friends, seeing their faces, tuning into their voices and tuning out any distracting sounds in the background. To feel the calming effects of your parasympathetic system switch on try this for 3 minutes: Put your hands on your belly so you can feel it fill with air as you inhale deeply. Notice the shape of your hands on your belly, allow them to be soft, to shape to your belly. As you breathe in and out feel how the shape of you changes under your hands.
