25.01.2022 Staying active is a great way to tackle two of mens major health risks at once - coronary heart disease and depression. As #menshealthweek draws to an end we must keep the discussion going about how to improve the health of our men and boys. Another way is to ensure that they get the help they need.... There are many resources available to assist with mens health, such as groups (The Australian Mens Shed Association - https://mensshed.org/), forums (Australian Mens Health Forum - https://www.amhf.org.au/) and telephone support (MensLine Australia - 1300 78 99 78). Another logical place to seek professional advice for improving mens mental and physical wellbeing is a doctor, as they have an overview of our personal and family medical history. If you would like to speak to a doctor concerning an aspect of mens health, appointments can be made with Greenway Medical Centre through our website or by contacting our medical reception on 02 6100 9956.

21.01.2022 #MensHealthWeek starts today. Only part of mens overall health is determined by genetics, with a large portion controllable through lifestyle. Nutrition makes up a large part of mens health. However, consuming the recommended five to seven servings of fruit and veggies a day may seem difficult for some.... Weve illustrated just how simple it can be to achieve good nutrition. 1 apple, half an avocado, 1 stalk of celery, half a grapefruit, and 5 pieces of broccoli, is an example of how you could meet your daily nutritional needs. If you need assistance with your diet or anything else relating to general health, your doctor is a great place to start. If you would like to discuss your health with a doctor at Greenway Medical Centre, please make an appointment with our friendly reception staff on 02 6100 9956 or book online.

21.01.2022 Half of all Australians have at least one of the following - arthritis, asthma, back pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease, long-term breathing problems, diabetes or a mental health condition. For some, these chronic diseases can have a significant impact on their lives and those around them. Utilising advice and resources available from your doctor can help improve quality of life when living with these long term conditions.... For example, some people with chronic disease will be eligible for a GP Management Plan. This plan provides an agreed course of action made between you and your GP to tackle an ongoing health issue. There is also an option called a Team Care Arrangement for those who require at least two other health professionals in addition to their GP. If you have an ongoing health condition, please discuss this with your GP at your next consultation. Otherwise, appointments can be made online on the Greenway Medical Centre website or with our friendly reception staff on 02 6100 9956.

20.01.2022 As we age, our health needs will most likely require more attention and they may become more complex. It’s best to stay up to date with any areas that require health management, as health can be better maintained and any new conditions will be easier to manage as they arise. As your primary care provider, your GP can help assess and treat these areas of concern. They can also ensure proper care of all conditions, either together with you or as part of a health management tea...m that includes a specialist or allied health professional. The doctors of Greenway Medical Centre aim to provide continuity of care which meets your needs and encourages optimum wellbeing. Appointments are available with the doctors through the website or with our friendly reception staff on 02 6100 9956.

17.01.2022 Most of us associate thirst as an obvious sign of dehydration, yet the loss of hydration happens well before the feeling of thirstiness. We understand that both kids and adults may not be keen to drink plain water, so we hope these ideas may offer some alternatives. Strawberries, oranges, lettuce, cucumbers, spinach, watermelon or cantaloupe are full of water and ideal for packing in lunches. Making fun shapes may offer even more appeal.... Home-made coconut water and berry popsicles could be another way to encourage everyone to stay hydrated during those hot summer days. Understand ways in which to keep ourselves and those we care for hydrated, is as important as knowing the signs of dehydration. If you notice, for example, that your child's urine is a darker colour, it will provide a prompt to encourage them to consume more water. A dry mouth and fatigue can be a sign of dehydration, as can dizziness and confusion. These tell-tale signs are useful for those caring for elderly-people and those whose health is vulnerable to the side effects of dehydration. Specifics risks of dehydration relating to medication or conditions such as diabetes can form part of a discussion within a doctor's consultation. To contact our friendly reception staff, please call 02 6100 9956 or bookings are available online through the website.

15.01.2022 For those heading down the beach this summer, a little awareness of the presence of jellyfish is wise. On the Eastern coastline, bluebottles are a common species of jellyfish that are often washed up onto beaches in the summer-time by onshore winds. Although stinging can occur in the water, remember to watch your step as even when bluebottles are on the sand, they can sting.... If you or someone else is stung, it's best to pick off the tentacles straight away, as the skin on our fingers is usually too thick for the stingers to penetrate. Instead of rubbing the site of the sting, wash and rinse the area carefully with saltwater. Although dousing the sting site liberally for 30 seconds with vinegar is recommended for treatment of both box jellyfish and Irukandji stings in tropical Queensland, the method for bluebottle has changed in recent times. The current consensus for a bluebottle sting is not to use vinegar but instead, wash off the tentacles with hot water (ideally 45C) for 20 minutes. Ice in a dry plastic bag is ideal for dulling the pain afterwards, as cooling the area will help reduce inflammation. Note that applying pressure immobilisation bandages or urine, are no longer recommended. Should the person have difficulty breathing or become very unwell, please call for an ambulance immediately on 000. For any other concerns, medical attention may be appropriate. Appointments with Greenway Medical Centre are available online through the website or with our friendly reception staff on 02 6100 9956.

14.01.2022 Often a diet is focused on weight, yet what we eat can impact other areas such as heart health. To take care of our heart health, fresh and unprocessed food like vegetables, fruit, and whole grains provide a good start, along with various healthy protein-rich foods. Healthy fats and oils can assist further while avoiding excess salt and sugar can positively affect heart risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol.... Your doctor can assess these as part of a Heart Health Check that can also include an ECG and basic blood tests. Heart Health Checks are encouraged as part of #HeartWeek2021 by the Heart Foundation who have more information relating to eating for a healthier heart: https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/heart-hea/healthy-eating Appointments are available online through the website or with our friendly reception staff by calling 02 6100 9956.

14.01.2022 You may not have heard of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), but it is a common lung disease. COPD affects around 1 in 7 Australians over 40 years of age, with chronic bronchitis and emphysema making up a large proportion of those diagnosed conditions. Although smoking is a common cause of COPD, it may derive from genetics or environmental causes, such as exposure to dust, vapour, gas, or fumes at work.... Unfortunately, many of those with COPD are unaware of the disease, thinking that their shortness of breath, chronic cough or wheezing is due to asthma, age or a lack of fitness. At the moment, no cure exists for COPD. However, some steps may help slow down the progression of this disease while improving an individual's quality of life. These steps include early diagnosis, upkeep of a disease management program and medication or inhalers to control symptoms. The doctors of Greenway Medical Centre can assist the management of this condition. Where applicable, your GP can devise an annual COPD action plan to help identify when symptoms change and, from there, what action you should take. Appointments are available online through the website or with our friendly reception staff by calling 02 6100 9956.

13.01.2022 Ensuring cholesterol levels are well managed is one way in which to guard against coronary artery disease. Taking control of our cholesterol levels can start with an understanding of the different types of food fats. 12.01.2022 We thought it fitting to end National Diabetes Week with three simple rules for eating from journalist Michael Pollan. That is; to eat what your great grandmother would recognise as food; to try and leave the table a little hungry; to consume a higher proportion of fruit and vegetables -the less processed, the better. If you are looking to improve your diet or would like to check your risk of diabetes, your doctor will be happy to discuss at your next consultation.... Appointments to see a doctor at Greenway Medical Centre can be made on the website or with our friendly reception staff on 02 6100 9956.

05.01.2022 As children, we have heard the virtue of eating all our vegetables. As adults, the same should apply, especially when aiming for a healthy weight or improving our general wellbeing. Yet describing the ideal amount of vegetables as at least five portions a day is confusing for some.... Another way to gauge an ideal amount of vegetables is to question if at least one-third of our plate contains leafy salads and raw vegetables. Adding legumes like beans, lentils and chickpeas to these salads can go even further to balance pasta, grain, meat and dairy foods. For more information about the foods that are good for our health, please visit https://www.eatforhealth.gov.au. Your doctor can also organise specific nutrition information based on your current health and medical history. Appointments are available online through the website or with our friendly reception staff by calling 02 6100 9956.

05.01.2022 The Stroke Foundation is celebrating #strokeweek2020 by recognising the F.A.S.T heroes (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) who can pick up, and act upon, the sign of a stroke. Getting to the hospital sooner can be a lifesaver and at the very least, reduce the effects of a stroke. Thats because a stroke can interfere with blood flow to the brain, and without the oxygen from that blood supply, brain cells begin to die.... So time is critical, and those that know the F.A.S.T. indicators of a stroke can call an ambulance immediately. The risk factors associated with stroke are related to diet, exercise, smoking and alcohol. The management of health conditions such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels can reduce risk as well. For the personal risk factors of stroke, it is best to consult your doctor. Appointments are available at Greenway Medical Centre through the website or with our friendly reception staff on 02 6100 9956.
