24.01.2022 Our Astra Zeneca Covid19 vaccination clinics are going very well and have become quite social occasions with patients required to wait around for at least 15 minutes after vaccination. Some patients have suggested I set up a bar!! (Really! )...maybe a tea station... We also have plenty of influenza vaccines- just make sure there is at least 2 weeks between your Covid and influenza vaccinations. And while we are talking vaccinations consider: Shingles vaccination (Zostava...x, free for ages 70-79yo) Tetanus vaccination (every 10 years) Pneumonia vaccination (Pneumovax 23- once only or maybe twice, 5 years apart for high risk patients ). Stay healthy everyone!

21.01.2022 NSW Health is alerting the public to the following locations visited by confirmed cases of COVID-19: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates As... outlined today, three new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in South West Sydney. All three cases are under investigation, with contact tracing underway. People who attended the Fitness First Carlingford Pilates Class on Saturday 3 October from 8:15 am to 9:15 am are considered close contacts and must immediately get tested and isolate for 14 days since they were there, and stay isolated for the entire period, even if a negative test result is received. NSW Health is directly contacting those who attended. NSW Health is assessing potential exposure to COVID-19 of people who attended several other venues. Anyone who attended the following venues is considered casual contacts and should immediately isolate and get tested even if they develop the slightest symptoms of COVID-19. Friday 2 October: Kmart, Narellan Town Centre, Narellan 6 pm to 7 pm Saturday 3 October: Fitness First, Carlingford (all attendees other than those in the pilates class notified above): 8 to 9:15am Sunday 4 October: Penrith Homemaker Centre, Penrith 11 am to 1 pm Sunday 4 October: Guzman y Gomez, Penrith 1:30 pm to 2 pm Sunday 4 October: Home Co, Penrith 2 pm to 2:30 pm Monday 5 October: Westfield Parramatta 9:30 am to 11 am Monday 5 October: Castle Towers Shopping Centre, Castle Hill 12 pm to 1 pm Testing numbers have dropped recently, which is a concern. NSW Health renews its call for increased testing across Sydney, even if you have the mildest of symptoms like a runny nose or scratchy throat, cough, fever or other symptoms that could be COVID-19. This is especially important for people across West and South West Sydney with these new cases and after the state’s sewage surveillance program detected fragments of the virus at the North Richmond and West Camden treatment plants. COVID-19 testing clinics can be found here: https://www.nsw.gov.au//how-to-protect-yourself-an/clinics, or call your GP.

18.01.2022 More information on the very rare prothrombotic disorder associated with the Astra Zeneca Covid-19 vaccine has become available. The vaccine appears to be linked to a condition that clinically resembles heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) and that occurs mainly in younger women. The information below comes from Medscape Family Medicine. "Researchers have described clinical and laboratory details of nine patients from Germany and Austria who developed this condition 4 to ...16 days after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine in a preprint article published March 28 on Research Square. They found that serum from four patients who were tested showed platelet-activating antibodies directed against platelet factor 4 (PF4), similar to what is seen in HIT.They are proposing naming the condition "vaccine-induced prothrombotic immune thrombocytopenia (VIPIT)" to avoid confusion with HIT. At a press conference March 31, the EMA said its ongoing review of the situation "has not identified any specific risk factors, such as age, gender or a previous medical history of clotting disorders, for these very rare events. A causal link with the vaccine is not proven but is possible, and further analysis is continuing."

18.01.2022 The NSW Government is using CCTV to monitor how many people are wearing masks at the busiest five train stations in Sydney, if people aren't wearing masks, harsher restrictions could be imposed. NSW recorded nine new cases on Friday.

13.01.2022 Healthy fats? Healthy fats tend to be liquid at room temperature (oils) and include: monounsaturated fats (omega 9) and polyunsaturated fats (omega 3 and 6). Unhealthy or saturated fats tend to be solid at room temperature. Omega 3 are healthy oils, essential for humans, but human bodies cannot make them. They should be included in your diet and are beneficial for -heart health, lower heart rate, lower triglycerides, reduce blood pressure, improve blood vessel function, ...delay the build up of arterial plaque - mental health - reducing weight and waist size - decreasing liver fat - supporting infant brain health - fighting inflammation The best food sources of omega 3 oils are oily fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, anchovies) and chia, walnut and flax seeds. Omega 6 oils are also essential and should be included in the diet. They primarily provide energy. Too many omega 6's can increase the risk of inflammation and inflammatory disease. Omega 6 oils are found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds. It is best to avoid refined cooking oils but opt for extra virgin olive oil for cooking. Commercial vegetable oils may also contain trans fats, which are associated with increased risk of heart disease, obesity, cancer, and diabetes. You should eat more omega 3's than omega 6's. Omega 9 oils are not strictly essential in the diet but do have health benefits such as improved insulin sensitivity, cognitive ability and decreased inflammation. Nuts, seeds and nut and seed oils are rich in omega 9. THE MAIN THINGS TO AVOID ARE SATURATED AND TRANS FATS. These fats can increase the risk of heart disease by increasing the bad (LDL) cholesterol and lowering the good (HDL) cholesterol. Saturated fats are mainly found in meat and dairy products, such as meat fat, chicken skin, butter, cream, ghee, lard, copha, dripping, ham, processed meats, bacon, palm oil, coconut oil and dairy ice cream. Try to avoid or at least reduce these. Trans fats are mainly found in processed foods such as biscuits, cakes, pastries, hot chips, pizza, hamburgers. The best fats/oils to eat are: unrefined, extra virgin olive oil, walnut oil, flaxseed oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil and sesame oil. Avoid palm oil and coconut oil. When using oils for cooking use oils that have a high smoke point- unrefined, extra virgin olive is generally considered the best. Never heat your oil to 'burn' point.
