02.01.2022 NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians, not only Indigenous communities - learn and embrace the history of this country which dates back thousands of generations. Let’s understand the difference between Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement of Country A Welcome to Country is a ceremony performed by Indigenous Traditional Custodians to welcome visitors to their traditional land. It can only be done by Traditional Custodians of the land that you are on. ... This is a tradition that has been practiced in Aboriginal culture for thousands of years. Australia is made up of many different tribes with different land areas. In the old days, tribes that wanted to pass through another tribe's country needed permission to do so and had to be welcomed through. A Welcome to Country occurs at the beginning of a formal event, meeting or speech and can take many forms including singing, dancing, smoking ceremonies or a speech in traditional language or English. An Acknowledgment of Country can be given by an Indigenous or non-Indigenous person. It's an opportunity to introduce yourself and to show the respect you have for the country, the people and water you're on. Acknowledgement of Country is generally offered at the beginning of a meeting, speech or formal occasion. #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #NAIDOC
