24.01.2022 After being cooped up all week in the cold and wet the colony needs an airing. Staying bunked down can cause health issues, so a little sugar syrup to stimulate them and boost their metabolism helps in many ways. Healthy bees are happy bees. #cleansingflights #stimulatingbees #supplementaryfeedingbees #sugarsyrup #springbrook

22.01.2022 Wasn’t looking for the queen but there she was, as soon as I removed the excluder on top of the frames. Can you see her? (5th frame from the right) I think she was happy to get some morning sun after a cold night. #queenspotting #beekeeping #wintermaintenance #beehive #underthelid #attheentrance #springbrook #hivelife

21.01.2022 It’s swarm season in beekeeping land. This gorgeous little swarm only moved into an olive tree about 10m from their original hive. If you look at the behaviour and movement you’ll notice some of the returning scout bees doing their waggle and figure-8 dance to indicate to the colony where they have found a potential new home. Fortunately we captured this colony before the colony decided to move on. Thanks Dane & Shelley @our_promised_land for the call up. #swarmcatching #scoutbees #beebehaviour #lovespringtime #witherin

04.01.2022 This morning’s low temp was -1c. The foragers took their time getting up and going.... much like us on a cold morning. However, inside the hive the colony is busy preparing for a population boom in early spring. A bees work is never done! . #springpreparations #beekeeping #springbrook #beesworkisneverdone
