25.01.2022 This is a Steinway M that I recently fully regulated. Photos show the action on a portable workbench, adjusting the glide bolts on the balance rail and a shot of the keys before levelling. Minor repairs were made before regulating. Pre-regulation measurements were recorded, all appropriate friction points lubricated, hammers shaped, keyboard levelled, key frame bedded and all adjustments made as per Steinway specs. All in all approx 20 hours work. The before and after feel o...f the piano to play was a dramatic improvement! A high downweight (the force in grams to move a key) was reduced, eveness and control now exists and consequently the tone of the piano has improved. If you arent happy with the way your piano feels or you experience pain in your arms when playing demanding repertoire regulating your piano is the answer! you dont want to be physically wrestling your instrument. 25.01.2022 This silent practice keyboard, which Ive never come across before, had so much "slop" in the action that the keys needed rebushing at the front and balance rail. The keyboard feels so good to play now!
25.01.2022 A recent example from an old Beale. Yuk! I dont think pianists are aware that when they are sitting at an old upright what lurks beneath. Under the keybed is the potential health hazard of decades of build up of dust mixed with anything from mice droppings, dead mice, odds and ends and possibly lead dust from key leads. Every time youre pounding away a hidden puff of this stuff could be rising up to be breathed in. The solution is to remove the keys and vacuum the keybed.
25.01.2022 First time that Ive come across one of these, a 5 octave (63 note) drop action Knight piano. Many keytops had come off so the old glue was sanded back and the keytops reglued. Normally I would like to do this many keytops in the workshop but when you come across an unexpected situation after travelling well out of town to get there you need to improvise in order to get the job done, hence the old red bricks. Weighing down the old keys proved better than clamping in this situation. It all worked out well and this is an amazing little piano with a suprisingly good sound.
23.01.2022 Nice folk art on this German Becker (Boris!)
23.01.2022 The recently acquired "Roll or Karri" upright piano moving trolleys. These are a fantastic design making it possible to move a piano single-handedly without needing to book in for physio the next day.
23.01.2022 Tuned this classic Yamaha CP70 for the first time recently. Brings back memories of Don Walker playing one with Cold Chisel. They promised to be the answer to every piano players dream of having a real acoustic sound that you could take to a gig. They were soooo.. heavy though and with the heat from stage lighting and getting knocked around in the back of the truck it was hard to keep them in tune. Easy enough to tune with only 2 strings per note, horrible bass because of the short string length and high inharmonicity. Wooden pinblock and all.
22.01.2022 The new Steinway player piano!
21.01.2022 repairing an upright action. New bridle tapes to be installed, hammers shaped, components cleaned.
21.01.2022 New project is this 1895 Collard straight strung grand. Poor condition needing extensive work on under damper system.
18.01.2022 My assistant Yoshiki hard at work moving an old Rich Lipp piano in Colac. Arigato.
18.01.2022 Schiedmayer grand after the soundboard has been cleaned.

16.01.2022 A recent venture has been to design and build a set of trollies that make it possible to relocate a piano within a room with one person, safely and without damaging floors, the piano or my back. A two level, triple wheeled dolly is placed under each leg after it is raised with my "jack-in-a-box". Very successful on its maiden voyage!
16.01.2022 Yoshiki just before the big push onto the trailer, he didnt know what was in store for him at this stage.
16.01.2022 Why is my grand piano making a funny noise? This is why!! Its a wonder that a piano manufacturer has yet to design a fallboard with a lip that prevents this from happening.
13.01.2022 Recent trip to Berlin visiting the Bechstein and Steinway piano houses, got to indulge the fingers. Such incredible feeling and sounding pianos. Franz Listzs own piano was in Bechstein house fully restored. All within a 10min walk of where we were staying! Also the house of Borsendorfer in Vienna and the house of Petrof pianos in Prague, made in the Czech Republic for many decades now.
11.01.2022 Reconditioning a perfect set of ivories on an amazing old 1908 Bechstein grand. Most of the discolouration was removed by sanding, bleaching and cut/polishing. Came up a treat. Shots are before (in the piano) and after (on the bench).
10.01.2022 new bridle tapes installed
08.01.2022 Schiedmayer grand before soundboard cleaning.
08.01.2022 These new Rich Lipp pianos all seem to suffer the same fate, tight centre pin bushings making the piano virtually unplayable in some cases. So many hammers on this piano sitting forward, each one was removed and treated with Protek CLP which solved the problem.

04.01.2022 Collard - repairing damper system, rebushing damper guide rail, reshaping hammers, cleaning soundboard, cleaning rust from strings, fashioning a part to replace broken action components, replacing jack cushion felts, refelting keyframe. Action is a precursor to the modern grand action.
03.01.2022 1905 Schiedmayer grand tuned recently.
01.01.2022 This 1865 Paris Erard was repaired to playing condition, successfully pitch raised to A440, damper assembly repaired, broken hammers repaired and shaped, soundboard cleaned and hammer centre pins treated with CLP to free them up from their frozen state. This piano has a lovely sound!
