08.01.2022 Painting Childrens Furniture I recently became a dad again and my beautiful wife asked me to refresh the babies cot with a new coat of paint. She asked me what paint is safe to use on the babies furniture to which I replied "a low VOC paint would be most appropriate" but it occurred to me, judging by her reaction that she had no idea what I was talking about despite the fact that Im certain she would have conducted her own Google research on the topic prior to our discuss...ion. So I thought it best to share some knowledge I have on the topic and hopefully provide others with some guidance so here goes. Low VOC refers to Volatile Organic Compounds. These are typically added to paints to aid in their workability and coverage amongst other things. These VOCs give off gasses that can linger on painted surfaces and rooms for long periods and can be potentially harmful but paints have come a long way in recent years and most paint manufacturers produce a range of Low VOC paints. These paints use significantly less VOCs and in some cases no VOCs resulting in little to no "off gassing" without the loss of quality in the product finish or workability. So when I undertake the task my wife assigned me I will be using http://www.taubmans.com.au/profes/pure-performance-interior This is a water based paint that has no VOCs so I can be sure that when my daughter goes off to her dreams each night she wont be breathing in nasty paint fumes or when shes older and decides to chew on the side of her cot I can rest assured that the paint I used doesnt have a toxic effect on her. So next time you have a painting project ask your paint supplier for the Low VOC option.
